Component/system that failed: The audio/infotainment system (radio), rear DVD entertainment system, and backup camera all fail together while driving. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Description of the problem: While driving, the radio works normally for approximately 10-30 minutes, then begins developing static that gradually worsens until the audio cuts out completely. At the same time, the rear-seat DVD entertainment system stops functioning, and the backup camera also fails. This appears consistent with a known defect in the MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) bus and FAKRA connectors that Honda has already acknowledged and recalled on 2019-2022 Pilot, 2019-2023 Passport, and 2018-2023 Odyssey models (NHTSA Campaign 23V431), but my 2017 Pilot Elite with the same Navigation/rear entertainment head unit is not covered by that recall despite the identical failure pattern. How safety was put at risk: Loss of the backup camera while driving/reversing removes a safety feature I rely on to see behind the vehicle, increasing risk of a collision when backing up, especially around pedestrians or in tight parking situations. This mirrors exactly the safety concern Honda cited in its own recall notice for later model years — that loss of MOST communication causes rearview camera failure.

I was driving back from my daughter's tournament in [XXX] and while driving, I heard a loud Crack. It sounded like It came from the top of the car. When we got home I hit the button for the moonroof slide and noticed that the moorroof had cracked. There was no one in front of us and no debris when the loud Crack occurred. Luckily there was no glass shards that fell on the kids. I looked online and saw many other customers had this same scenario happen and glass fell on their children. Customers are also saying that this is due to cold/heat exposure. The Problem cannot be reproduced as it involves glass. And there are no warning lights for this issue. I am reporting the incident today to my dealer and insurance. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Drivers side wiper blade stopped working in a driving rainstorm. Zero visibility. Went into on coming lane for a few seconds. Was able to get off onto shoulder. Fortunately no cars were coming and there was no collision. Problem was two nuts had come loose on the wiper arm linkage.

The transmission completely broke/ went out. Honda knows this is a recurrent issue with these vehicles. The fuel injectors had already been replaced on this vehicle at 40,000 miles before Honda was admitting a defect. They are well aware there are transmission issues for the Honda Pilot but are not taking responsibility costing car owners thousands. We were left on the side of the road, needing to use insurance to cover towing. Rather than dealing with labor we sold the car at a great loss of money. This is hear say but the towing complaint reports they are towing Honda Pilots consistently these days. Honda should be held responsible.

We drove from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Alexandria, Virginia on 12/27. About 20 minutes from our destination, we exited the highway onto the parkway and as we were going about 15-18mph on an exit ramp, the closed sun roof imploded. There were no trees, bridges, or even other cars (due to it being near 10pm) nearby to cause this from falling debris. There is no impact site- just a broken roof. It was terrifying and I nearly drove off the road from the sound (my husband and 2 children 9 and 11 were also in the car.) The only reason I did not crash the Pilot was due to the fact that I am pretty cool headed- it took us an additional 20 minutes of driving with an unknown state on the top of the roof to discover what had happened due to the fact that there was no way to exit or pull off the parkway. We validated that there was no bridge (aka no one was able to throw something off and onto to the top of the car) and the night was mostly clear. If it was an item it would have to be "part of a plane or a meteor" And no item came through or damaged the closed sun shade for the roof. We took pictures of the glass and have to have it replaced today since we are on a road trip and have to be able to drive this vehicle home before New Years. It is also parked outside and we have to get the roof re-sealed before it rains. I am spending $700+ out of pocket to put a used sunroof on the pilot to be able to get this home (which probably has the same glass defect). The shop is going to do this today and I will have them take additional photos. There were no warning lights, our car is kept in the garage at home and rarely parked outside. It has never been in hail and we do very light highway driving (it is almost entirely city driving in our day to day lives).

WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE DRIVER'S-SIDE WIPER STOPPED WORKING. HAD TO STOP ON HARD SHOULDER. ISSUE WAS NOT OBVIOUS. THE RAIN WAS NOT GOING TO END ANY TIME SOON SO MY PARTNER ENDED UP DRIVING THEIR VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WITH THE HAZARDS FLASHING AT LOW SPEED SO I COULD FOLLOW THEM CLOSELY UNTIL WE COULD GET TO AN EXIT AND LEAVE THE PILOT AT A PARK-AND-RIDE. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS: SUDDEN LOSS OF VISIBILITY AND THEN BEING STRANDED ON THE HARD SHOULDER WITH TRUCKS PASSING CLOSELY. TOOK THE PILOT TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY. THEY REMOVED A RUBBER COVER FROM THE WIPER MOUNT AND TIGHTENED THE BOLT THAT IS UNDERNEATH. THE SERVICE ADVISER SAID THEY CAN COME LOOSE IN THE WINTER DUE TO THE WIPERS GETTING STUCK IN ICE. I AM AMAZED THAT THIS RELIES SOLELY ON FRICTION TO FUNCTION GIVEN HOW DANGEROUS IT IS WHEN THEY FAIL.

NEW PILOT ELITE JUST OVER 2 MONTHS OLD AND WITH ROUGHLY 3800 MILES ON IT HAD THE SUNROOF (NOT PANORAMIC MOONROOF) BLOW OUT ON A RURAL HIGHWAY WITH NO CARS OR OBJECTS IN SIGHT. NOTHING HIT THE CAR OR FLEW INTO VIEW PRIOR TO EXPLOSION. THIS OCCURRED 100 MILES FROM HOME AND ON A SUNDAY SO THE CAR HAD TO BE LIMPED HOME TO BE TAKEN TO THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING DAY. THE DEALER CLAIMED THEY TOOK PICTURES AND COMMUNICATED WITH AMERICAN HONDA OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SUNROOF BLEW OUT BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN WEAKENED BY ROCK CHIPS OVER TIME EVEN THOUGH WE HAD NEVER SEEN A SINGLE BLEMISH IN THE SUNROOF AND WE LOOK THROUGH IT REGULARLY BECAUSE WE HAVE SMALL CHILDREN AND LOOK AT THE AIRPLANES THROUGH THERE. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR AFTER I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THE REPAIR, THE SERVICE MANAGER SHOWED ME THE ALLEGED ROCK CHIPS IN THE PAINT ON THE ROOF.. THERE WERE WAY TOO MANY THERE FOR A 2 MONTH OLD CAR. WHEN I GOT HOME AND SHOWED MY WIFE THE 'ROCK CHIPS', I REALIZES THAT THERE WASN'T A SINGLE ROCK CHIP FORWARD OF THE SUNROOF AND IT DAWNED ON ME THAT THOSE WEREN'T ROCK CHIPS BUT GOUGES IN THE PAINT FROM SHATTER GLASS ALL OF WHICH WERE BEHIND THE SUNROOF.

PE25008 · Engine Failure

Opened Aug 20, 2025 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 414 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in the 3.5L V6 engine used in the following vehicles: Model Years (MY) 2018-2020 Acura TLX, MY2016-2020 Acura MDX, MY2016-2020 Honda Pilot, MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and MY2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline.  The subject engine failures were analyzed as part of a Recall Query (RQ24013).  It was determined that these engine failures are outside the scope of Honda Recall 23V-751. Further, evidence gathered in conjunction with RQ24013 does not suggest this failure is caused by the same crankshaft manufacturing defect that is addressed by Honda in Recall 23V-751.  Based on analysis of data from RQ24013, NHTSA has closed that investigation. The significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of RQ24013 presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation.  ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues.  To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

On June 3, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE22005 after the agency received VOQs and several field reports concerning the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles. The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. The subject vehicles are equipped with a 3.5L engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. On January 6, 2023, Honda released service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. These service bulletins address the failure to restart issue in the 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles, as well as the 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Honda Passport, and 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The repair outlined in the service bulletins is a two-stage countermeasure to remedy the issue. The first stage is a Programmed Fuel Injection (“PGM-FI”) software update. The second stage is only deployed if the software update fails to remedy the issue. The second stage, depending on the model and model year, consists of replacement of the starter assembly, starter relays, and a valve adjustment. Additionally, Honda extended the warranty coverage to 10 years with unlimited mileage for vehicles requiring the second stage component replacement. ODI continues to receive complaints of the AIS failure to restart, with many complainants alleging the campaign countermeasures had been completed.NHTSA has reviewed Honda's Information Request Letter responses involving warranty claims, lawsuits, and consumer complaints in addition to ODI's own data. This Engineering Analysis is being opened to further consider the potential safety defect, including gathering additional data regarding Honda’s service campaign efficacy. ODI is additionally expanding the scope to encompass all vehicles addressed in Honda’s service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009 as well as newer model year vehicles, which are substantially similar to the vehicles covered by the service campaign. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

RQ24013 · Engine Failure

Opened Nov 8, 2024 · Closed Aug 20, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine

On November 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ24013 to assess the scope of Honda recall 23V-751 after receiving complaints that alleged connecting rod bearing failures in vehicles that were not within the scope of recall 23V-751. In November 2023, Honda recalled 248,999 various Model Year (MY)2016–2020 Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. Honda recalled these vehicles due to a crankshaft manufacturing defect that caused premature connecting rod bearing wear and engine seizure. While the out-of-scope failures involved in these complaints appear to have a very similar failure mechanism as the recalled engines, a thorough analysis of all available data from Honda has not indicated that the same manufacturing defect exists in the out-of-scope engines as the engines recalled by 23V-751. Based on this analysis ODI has determined that Honda has properly defined the scope of recall 23V-751. Consequently, ODI will close this RQ investigation.  NHTSA will continue to investigate these complaints of engine failure as part of a new Preliminary Evaluation Investigation (PE25008). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
