MY 2008 HONDA FIT SPORT BEGAN HAVING A "SURGING" ISSUE FROM THE 2ND WEEK AFTER I BOUGHT IT NEW IN 2008. I WOULD TAP THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND THE ENGINE WOULD SURGE. HITTING THE BRAKES A SECOND TIME USUALLY STOPPED IT BUT THROWING IT INTO NEUTRAL HELPED TOO. I REPORTED IT FREQUENTLY TO THE HONDA DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM AND SAID THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT. IT CONTINUED FOR 4 YEARS, AND THEN SEEMED TO STOP FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS. THIS PAST MARCH, IT STARTED AGAIN, AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THEN IT HAPPENED WHILE I WAS COMING DOWN THE HILL I LIVE ON. THE CAR WAS IN 2ND GEAR (USING THE SHIFTER), AND I TAPPED THE BRAKES TO SLOW A BIT. THE ENGINE BEGAN ACCELERATING AND GOING FASTER. THE BRAKES DID NO GOOD; NEITHER DID THE EMERGENCY BRAKE; FINALLY, THE BRAKES GAVE OUT AND MY FOOT WAS FLAT ON THE FLOOR. I FINALLY PUT IT INTO PARK AND IT SLOWED DOWN TO A STOP. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM, EVEN THOUGH I PUT IT INTO PARK WHILE MOVING, NOR COULD THEY FIND ANY REASON FOR THE ACCELERATION. AMERICAN HONDA IS NO HELP EITHER. THEY DID BUY THE CAR BACK, BUT HAVE SOLD IT AS A USED CAR, AND I FEAR FOR THE PERSON WHO PURCHASED IT. I'M SURE THEY DID NOT LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM FURTHER. ON YOUR WEBSITE, I FOUND SEVEN (7) SIMILAR REPORTS FOR THE 2008 FIT AND FIVE (5) MORE FOR THE 2009. OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM ON EDMUNDS.COM FOR SEVERAL YEARS, YET THE HONDA SALES MANAGER DID NOT WANT TO LOOK AT THE PRINTOUT I GAVE HIM. HERE ARE THE NHTSA ID#S THAT REPORT A SIMILAR PROBLEM: 10523098, 1049187, 10425811, 10344231, 10323002, 10317179, 10282552, 10266390, 10368077, 10329557, 10308988, 10280593. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER - IT IS VERY SERIOUS. *TR

PARKING ON A SIDE STREET BEHIND ANOTHER CAR APPLYING BRAKE, AND WOOSH! CAR TOOK OFF IN WHAT I'VE LATER LEARNED WAS AN "UNINTENDED ACCELERATION," RUNNING INTO THE CAR IN FRONT AND SMUSHING IN THE HOOD OF MY CAR. I THOUGHT I HAD LET MY FOOT SLIP OR HAD SKID ON SOME ICE, BUT LATER SIMILAR INCIDENCES MADE ME WONDER. THIS LAST TIME (MAY 30, 2013), AGAIN WAS PARKING CAR AND APPLYING BREAK IN A PARKING LOT (FULL OF LAWYERS' CARS!) AND AS I APPROACHED THE SPACE, CAR VERY QUICKLY SPED UP AND I NEARLY CRASHED INTO A LIGHT POLE AND/OR BEAUTIFUL NEW (EXPENSIVE) CAR TO MY RIGHT. I'M SURE ANYONE WITNESSING THIS WOULD SEE A DRIVER SLOWING DOWN AND THEN CAR JERKING AMAZINGLY FORWARD, LIKE A HORSE AT THE BEGINNING OF A RACE. I WAS SO VERY LUCKY IN THAT I WAS ABLE TO STEER RACING CAR INTO PARKING SPOT AND MAKE AN ABRUPT STOP (I DON'T KNOW HOW). QUITE SCARY! I LOOKED UP WHAT COULD BE THE CAUSE OF THIS PHENOMENON AND DISCOVERED THIS AS AN UNACKNOWLEDGED "KNOWN ISSUE" WITH SUPPOSEDLY NO KNOWN FIX. DANGEROUS! *TR

NOTICED THE BRAKING AFTER INITIALLY STARTING THE VEHICLE AND DRIVING HAS A SPONGY RESPONSE WITH THE TRAVEL OF THE BRAKE GOING TO THE FLOOR. THIS HAPPENS PERIODICALLY. I THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE CAR NOT BEING USED OFTEN, BUT THIS HAS OCCURRED AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN SITTING AFTER ONLY A SHORT WHILE. *TR

MY 2008 HONDA FIT SOMETIMES EXPERIENCES LOSS OF BRAKING POWER WHEN IT HAS BEEN STARTED AFTER SITTING FOR MANY HOURS. THIS BEHAVIOR IS NOT ALWAYS PRESENT, BUT IS INTERMITTENT, PERHAPS OCCURRING ABOUT 50% OF THE TIME. THERE IS A VERY LARGE LOSS OF BRAKING POWER, SUCH THAT THE CAR WILL ROLL TO A STOP, EVEN IF I APPLY STRONG PRESSURE TO THE PEDAL OR IF I PUMP THE BRAKES. THE BRAKE PEDAL CAN BE DEPRESSED ONLY A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TRAVEL WHEN THIS BEHAVIOR OCCURS, AND THE PEDAL DOES NOT GO TO THE FLOOR. IF I WAIT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AND IN "PARK" FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, THEN THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY, AND THE BRAKES WORK NORMALLY. I HAD BOUGHT THIS CAR USED IN SPRING OF 2011 FROM ITS FIRST OWNER, AND EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN APPROXIMATELY JULY 2012. SINCE THAT TIME, THE PROBLEM HAS BECOME MORE COMMON. *TR

Dec 10, 2020

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Acura ILX, 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid, 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, and 2007-2008 Honda Fit vehicles with a manual transmission and 2009-2013 Honda Fit vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The drive shafts' protective coating may not have been applied properly during manufacturing, making it more susceptible to damage from road salt, or other contaminants, and potentially cause it to break.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A broken drive shaft may cause a sudden loss of drive power. The vehicle could also roll away if the parking brake has not been applied before the vehicle has been exited. Either condition can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the drive shafts, replacing either the left or right drive shaft, if necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk with an interim letter mailed February 2, 2021. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are P9M, PAV, BAY, TAX, CA0, and MAZ.

Jun 24, 2013

Honda is re-recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Fit vehicles covered under previous recall 10V-033. The remedy applied in this earlier recall may have been insufficient. In the affected vehicles, over time, the plastic cover may separate from the master power window switch allowing water to enter the driver's window and reach the master power window switch. If the master power window switch is damaged as a result of the water intrusion, overheating and failure of the switch may result.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An overheated switch can cause smoke, melting and fire.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners in July 2013 and will instruct owners to take their vehicles to dealers to have a free inspection conducted. If the switch is damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. If the switch is not damaged, the owner will be instructed to await a second notification that will instruct them to return to the dealer to have a replacement switch installed free of charge. Honda anticipates it will have sufficient parts inventory to notify owners of vehicles with undamaged switches to return to dealers for replacement switches in Fall 2013. Renotification was sent out to owners on July 23, 2014. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's recall number is JA6.

HONDA IS RECALLING MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 HONDA FIT VEHICLES. DUE TO AN ERROR DURING INSTALLATION OF THE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE COMBINATION SWITCH THAT CONTROLS LOW HEAD BEAM FUNCTION, THE WIRES FOR THE LOWER BEAM CIRCUIT WERE PULLED TIGHTER THAN INTENDED. AFTER REPEATED USE OF THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH, THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TERMINAL FOR THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT CIRCUIT CAN BECOME WORN AS A RESULT OF THIS TENSION, WHICH CAN RESULT IN LOW CONDUCTIVITY AND CAUSE AN ACCUMULATION OF COPPER OXIDE IN THE AREA OF THE CONTACTS.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS CAN BECOME INOPERATIVE DECREASING THE DRIVER'S VISIBILITY AS WELL AS THE VEHICLE'S VISIBILITY TO OTHER DRIVERS, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE LOW BEAM TERMINAL AND PERFORM NECESSARY REPAIRS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 24, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.

In their Defect Information Report (DIR) of December 15, 2010, American Honda Motor Company, Inc. (Honda) notified NHTSA that it will conduct a safety recall of model year 2007 and 2008 Honda Fit vehicles to repair the headlights. The recall will remedy a defect in the low beam headlight circuit that can cause a total outage of the low beam headlights.Honda's DIR states: Due to a variation in the assembly sequence when installing the wiring harness for the combination switch that controls the headlights, the wires for the low beam headlight circuit can be pulled tighter than the wiring for the other functions controlled by the combination switch. After repeated use of the headlight switch, the electrical connector terminal for the low beam headlight circuit can become worn as a result of this tension, which can result in low conductivity and cause an accumulation of copper oxide in the area of the contacts. In some cases the poor conductivity may cause the terminal ends to melt within the wiring harness connector. If this occurs, the low beam headlights can become inoperative, increasing the risk of a crash. Honda dealer's will inspect the combination switch and wiring harness and remedy the defect free of charge. Please see safety recall file 10V624 for recall details
