The steering wheel seems "sticky" as in it feels as though it gets "stuck" in intervals typically after traveling several miles at highway speeds. It requires excess force to adjust and move the steering wheel once it "sticks" and is exceptionally noticeable while driving a straight path and having to adjust the wheel left/right in minor increments to follow the straight path. Occasionally I even overcompensate with force to "unstick" its position and have drifted over the center road line in the process which I instantly thought the first time it happened could prove dangerous if another driver were directly beside me in an adjacent lane. I will be having the vehicle assessed by the dealer in the next couple of days. No warning lamps indicate any problem with steering or steering components. This issue started somewhere around 4-5,000 miles and is progressing with continued vehicle use.

The contact owns a 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed on the highway, the contact became aware that the front passenger's side tire was flat. The contact pulled over to the side of the road. The contact called Honda Roadside Assistance to replace the tire with the spare tire and became aware that the vehicle was not equipped with a spare tire. The vehicle was towed to a tire shop, where the tire was replaced. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the Honda Hybrid vehicles were not required to be equipped with a spare tire. The contact stated that she was concerned for her safety. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 6,870.

Steering
As you drive the car, the steering wheel sticks/ binds/ freezes and every second the driver must move the steering wheel to correct the direction of the vehicle. It is a very serious safety issue. I am advised that the part necessary for the fix is on back order along with 18-20 others.

Our 2023 CR-V began having noticeable issues involving the steering around 6000 miles after 9 months of ownership. The steering wheel initially began to develop a tendency to remain centered requiring additional effort to initiate a turn. Once turning it felt normal. Over time the problem became worse, and the wheel began to stick when turning as well. At 6500 miles there is a noticeable resistance to initiating turns, or centering the wheel from a turn. Turns to the right tend to stick more than turns to the left. It is to the point now that in moderate turns you can let go of the steering wheel and it will remain in a turn. A slight knocking noise has also developed. When driving straight down the road it is extremely difficult to keep the vehicle centered in the lane. The effort required increases with speed and narrower lanes. Often the small corrections that would be normal for keeping a vehicle centered in a lane are not possible. The sticking tendency is significant enough now even the smallest corrections meant to stay centered in a lane result in the car darting back and forth. This is independent of the lane keeping system, it happens with the system on and off. With the system on, the lane keeping system appears to struggle as well. At approximately 6500 miles the car went to the dealer, and it as quickly diagnosed as being in need of a new steering rack. The service center said it would be more annoying than unsafe and did not see the need to keep the car. The part was supposed to be ordered by the service center but we were told it was on backorder with no ETA. The vehicle has approximately 6800 miles now and the issue is continuing to get worse and the vehicle can be difficult to handle in dense traffic with narrow lanes. The primary concern is how much worse will it get, and will the steering rack ultimately fail. The vehicle did not illuminate any warning lamps and is available for inspection upon request.

Purchased my car in July new. In August I got a CBMS warning for emergency brake system failure. Took it in and they said the front camera failed and needed to be replaced. It’s been on backorder since August 23. Because of this all the safety features including lane assist had to be turned off because the steering wheel would randomly jerk even when I was within the lane lines. Turned off the safety features and around 10,000 miles the steering wheel started clicking and aggressively jerking to the right or left while driving similarly to how it jerked when the safety features were on, even though they were already turned off from the previous steering wheel issues. Brought it to the dealership and they said the EPS rack failed and the care was unfit to drive. They put me in a rental since two safety issues occurred in the vehicle.

My steering started to feel stuck at highway and city speeds, causing more force than necessary to keep the car in the lane. This often causes overcorrecting and make the lane departure worse. This put me and others' safety at risk, as overcorrecting and shaky steering could cause accidents, especially at highway speeds. This problem has been reproduced by the dealer, and a new steering rack was ordered. There are several complaints of this same issue on forums and other online places for the CR-V and Civic as well. There was no warning or anything to indicated that this would happen.
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023-2026 CR-V Hybrid, Accord Hybrid, and 2025-2026 CR-V Fuel Cell EV vehicles. When using the tire repair kit, pressure may build within the sealant bottle, causing the bottle cap to detach.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A detached bottle cap can become a projectile and strike the user or others nearby, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the tire repair kit nozzle or sealant bottle, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed July 27, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available, anticipated in Fall 2026. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is DOV. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning June 11, 2026.

Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort

On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives. The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
