The mechanical backup keys on my "key fobs" do not work. When the key fob battery failed on 8/12/26 due to a dead key fob 2032 battery or a loose connection in the fob, I was locked out of my car with no ability to unlock the car. This happened in a garage, however it could happen again on the road or a highway and I would be left stranded with no way to get into my vehicle. When I was able to get the fob working again with new battery, I went to the dealer -San Francisco Honda -and two service representatives confirmed that the vehicle's manual mechanical emergency override fails to unlock the driver's door despite giving an internal "click." They refuse to fix it because the car is out of its general 36 month warranty. They stated I need to pay approximately $300 for the issue to be diagnosed, and then I would have to pay an unknown amount for the repair. I believe this issue has existed since I purchased the car and it should be handled as a safety defect under warranty.

My 2022 Honda Civic has developed an intermittent sticky steering condition. The steering wheel becomes difficult to turn around the center position and requires additional force before it moves normally again. This occurs during normal driving and makes it difficult to maintain smooth and predictable control of the vehicle. I am concerned that this could increase the risk of losing control, especially if an emergency steering correction is needed. In addition, I hear a knocking/tapping noise coming from the front of the vehicle whenever I turn the steering wheel at low speeds. The vehicle has never been involved in any accident, collision, or steering-related damage. There are no warning lights displayed. The problem developed during normal use and has become repeatable. The vehicle has not yet been diagnosed by a Honda dealership, but based on the symptoms and numerous similar owner reports involving 2022 Honda Civics, I believe this may be related to a defect in the steering system. I am submitting this complaint because I believe this is a potential safety issue and request that NHTSA investigate.

Hello I have a complaint about my clear coat coming off in certain areas. The hood of my car has water spots that will not come off and the passenger side has what looks like rock damage all up and down the side which is actually my clear coat coming off. This car is not that old and this should not be happening. I am at 37 thousand 800 miles and have to drive around in an otherwise perfect condition car. I take good care of my cars and I am very unhappy this is happening. I should not have to repair for any of this to be fixed as this is not my fault. I would appreciate any info on how Honda can make this issue better or resolved.

To whom it may concern at NHTSA, I am filing a formal complaint regarding a critical technical discrepancy in Honda’s manufacturing records that is preventing essential safety diagnostics and maintenance for my vehicle. Vehicle Details: • VIN: [XXX] • Model: 2022 Honda Civic Touring (11th Generation) • Manufacturing Plant: Honda of Canada Mfg. The Issue: According to the NHTSA Part 565 submittal (which I have verified), this specific VIN is registered with an L15B7 engine (normally associated with the 10th Gen Civic). My vehicle physically carries this engine, and it is documented in my official registration. However, when I take the vehicle to the Authorized Honda Distributor (Nile Trading & Engineering) for service, their Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) fails to establish a connection with the vehicle’s ECU. The system identifies a "Software/Model Year Mismatch" because the global HDS software expects an L15CA engine for all 2022 models, while my car carries the L15B7 as per the manufacturer's early 2022 production records. Lack of Cooperation from Honda: I have contacted American Honda Motor Co. (Case #XXX) multiple times to request a technical solution or a software patch to allow the local dealer to access the car’s systems. Despite the clear evidence of a manufacturing record anomaly: 1.American Honda has been completely uncooperative, refusing to escalate the issue to their engineering team in Canada. 2.They have formally closed my case, stating they "operate independently" and cannot assist with vehicles outside their immediate region, even though the error originates from their own manufacturing database. Safety Risk: Due to this "Diagnostic Lock," I am unable to: • Perform critical safety recalls. • Update vehicle software/firmware. • Diagnose potential engine or safety system failures. I reversing in my driveway, I heard a loud 'pop' from the front driver's side followed by a total loss of steering control. Upon inspection, a steering component (tie rod) appears to have snapped/failed. This vehicle is subject to NHTSA Recall #23V704000 for an incorrectly assembled steering rack that allows for excessive stroke length and contact with suspension components. I have not been in a recent accident; this was a spontaneous mechanical failure while maneuvering at low speed. Additionally, the authorized dealer (Norm Reeves Honda Cerritos) is refusing to perform the recall inspection without an upfront $190 diagnostic fee, obstructing the free remedy mandated by federal law.

The vehicle experiences an intermittent engine and/or electrical system failure causing the car to losing acceleration while driving. The exact component has not been identified because the failure is intermittent. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The problem has not been duplicated by the dealership, and they have declined to repair the vehicle on that basis. However, the issue continues to occur intermittently despite being reported. The vehicle has been presented to an authorized Honda dealership for inspection. The manufacturer has not identified the cause due to the intermittent nature of the failure. No inspection has been performed by police or insurance representatives. There are no consistent warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. The vehicle looses acceleration suddenly and without warning. The problem first started about a month ago and most recently happened today when our car was almost rear ended due to the car loosing acceleration drastically on its own.

I have reported this to American Honda - My driver car lock has been not working properly since 2024. It will intermittently not work to unlock the driver's door. Also, it will intermittently not lock my car automatically when I leave the vehicle with the key fob. The first time I took the vehicle in - they replaced the front door power latch. Since then, I took it in on May 2025 - they said since the car does it intermittently, they cannot fix it. Well, I just took the car back today, 12/09/25 - and I am leaving it there until they can find out what is the problem. In a emergency, if I needed to open my driver's door, to avoid a dangerous situation, and could not, I would be harmed. I have taken videos, and showed the dealer to help identify the issue. American Honda said to take it back to the dealer and have them fix it. I would like my vehicle fixed or bought back from me.

Anti-lock brake system problem. Brake performance may be reduced. See your dealer. Vehicle stability system assist problem. Reduced traction and handling. See your dealer. Electric parking brake system problem. Parking brake not available. See your dealer. I have shut the vehicle down and checked the VSA with no leaks and full fluid in reservoir. I checked the harness and the wires are great. I checked the the brake unit to make sure they were not loose. I also checked the parking button and observed it to be clean from debris. This is happening to multiple people with the new Honda Civics and has now became a safety as it will make the vehicle brake slower and not be available for forward collision. Is anyone else dealing with this and what was the fix. Thanks.

I am not sure if you would consider this as safety issue but with the amount of drivers using phones while driving I see it as a major safety issue. When asking the vehicle to read a text message aloud via CarPlay it starts off extremely loud for half a second then goes so quiet it cannot be heard making it useless. Obviously it would be advise for the driver to not pick up their phone while driving to check the text message but that is not reality these days. This has been a problem since the day I bought the car and was told by the dealer they couldn’t do anything to fix it until Honda did a software update. Three years later and still nothing. It seems there are tons of drivers who have reported the same issues but still no fix 3 years later. It’s a major safety issue in my opinion for both the drivers of 2022 civics and innocent drivers who probably have gotten hit or could get hit from a distracted driver because they are picking up their phone and taking their eyes off the road to read a text because the read out loud function doesn’t work. I ask the dealer every time I take the car in if there has been a fix yet and the answer is always no. Thanks for taking this into consideration! Honda has known of this potential safety issues for three years and has done nothing to fix it.

2EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort
Opened Nov 29, 2023 · Closed Jan 28, 2025
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering
On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives. The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
PE23005 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort
Opened Mar 17, 2023 · Closed Nov 30, 2023
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering
On March 17, 2023, The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE23-005) to access the alleged defect of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022 and 2023 Honda Civic vehicles. The complaints report that the momentary increase in steering effort (described as "sticky steering") occurs mostly at highway speeds after driving for a certain amount of time. The reports have been received over the past 2 years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear contains a unit that includes a worm gear and a worm wheel. Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this unit. During manufacturing, the worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes caused internal stress and strain within the worm wheel. This strain was slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain caused the deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This results in the consumer’s momentary increased in steering effort. Also, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and therefore, some vehicles within the scope received too little grease which contributes to the momentary increase in steering effort. Analysis of all relevant data indicates that the subject condition occurs early in the vehicle’s life primarily in winter months. Additionally, the subject vehicles need to be driven in a straight line for a period of time, possibly until the vehicle is warmed up, to recreate the condition. The condition does not illuminate a malfunction indicator light (MIL). Some complaints allege Honda dealerships are unable to recreate the condition or state this is a normal vehicle operation. However, Honda released Service Bulletin 23-037 in July of 2023 which accurately describes the condition. To address this issue, Honda directs dealerships to remove the electronic power steering (EPS) gearbox and replace with a new gearbox. Further, Honda stated that the worst case steering effort from all warranty returned parts tested was 2.4 pounds. ODI complaint traffic remains steady. ODI has received 13 crashes to date, 11 of which allege roadway departure due to not being able to overcome the momentary increased steering effort prior to their vehicle leaving the roadway. The remaining 2 incidents claim overcorrection of the steering wheel. PE23-005 has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA23-003) to further assess the scope, frequency and potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase of steering effort. Further the scope has been expanded to include assessment of the Acura Integra and Honda CR-V models. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
