My Honda Accord has a recurring infotainment/touchscreen malfunction commonly described as “phantom touch” or “ghost touch.” The touchscreen was replaced approximately one year ago under warranty for the same issue. The problem has now returned and is significantly worse. The infotainment system activates and changes functions without any input from the driver. The vehicle has experienced the following: Stereo turns on unexpectedly at an alarmingly high volume. Volume increases and decreases on its own. Radio stations change without driver input. The system automatically places phone calls without driver input. Phone connectivity turns off and back on by itself. Touchscreen selections and menus activate or change on their own. The backup camera does not always display when the vehicle is placed in reverse. These failures occur unpredictably, including while the vehicle is being operated, and create a significant driver distraction. The sudden high-volume audio and unexpected activation of phone, radio, and touchscreen functions can divert the driver’s attention from the road. I am particularly concerned that the backup camera intermittently fails to display when the vehicle is placed in reverse. Honda previously replaced the touchscreen under warranty because of the same malfunction. I recently returned the vehicle to Pensacola Honda in Pensacola, Florida, after the problem recurred. I was advised by the Service Manager that Honda considers the issue a programming problem and that no further repair or replacement would be performed. The problem remains unresolved and continues to occur. The prior touchscreen replacement did not provide a lasting correction. Because the system continues to activate functions without driver input and the backup camera does not consistently display when the vehicle is placed in reverse, I am reporting this recurring malfunction to NHTSA as a vehicle safety concern.

I am writing to formally report a serious, recurring safety hazard involving the infotainment unit in my Honda Accord Sport. While driving, the infotainment screen unexpectedly resets, shuts down, switches audio channels/radio stations, and drops live navigation/maps. These spontaneous failures cause sudden, unpredictable driver distraction and eliminate essential turn-by-turn navigation during active trips. Because this defect compromises my ability to keep my full attention on the road, it poses a direct safety hazard. I have recorded video evidence documenting these sudden reboots and malfunctions while the vehicle is in operation. Video like is below. [XXX] This has been happening for a few years but I have never been able to get it on video until now. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

What is considered the “infotainment center” is what Honda is calling “ghosting”. It randomly selects things or doesn’t work. It makes it impossible to use maps via this device taking out the safe option to use directions. It is also highly distracting while driving as it could be randomly calling someone and you’re desperately trying to make it hang up while it’s also not responding so you have to dig out your phone which is not something that you should be grabbing while driving. It falsely reports crashes and cops etc to Google Maps. It randomly chooses what it does or doesn’t want to do and when. It’s chaotic and concerning on top of removing the ability to safely map places. Other times it doesn’t respond at all. Video available as needed. Too large to upload

The vehicle's infotainment touchscreen intermittently registers phantom/ghost touches without anyone touching the screen. It randomly changes radio stations, screens and functions. During these episodes the touchscreen becomes unresponsive to the driver's actual inputs. The problem is significantly worse when the vehicle interior/display is hot. This creates a significant driver distraction and prevents the driver from reliably controlling the infotainment system. The condition has been occurring repeatedly over approximately two years

This ongoing problem, not related to an accident or single incident. The center console screen will jump around / glitch / freeze without being touched. These “ghost touches” go in and out of apps, make calls, switch between audio sources , many other unprompted things. This issue renders the center console screen almost unusable and downright unsafe to use. This is now the second screen in the vehicle with this problem. Honda was aware a replacement may not fix the problem but did it anyway. They are claiming there will be a total fix by March of 2027.

Issues with the Infotainment System - the screen flickers and switches constantly while driving which is a distraction and safety issue. Honda has told us in the past that the issue was with the USB cord being used but that is not it. This issue now happens anytime, not just when the USB is connected. All of the following has occurred: unexpected screen flashing/flickering; phantom or uncontrolled touchscreen inputs; unexpected menu changes; changes to radio stations or audio sources; sudden volume changes or unexpected sounds; navigation changes, cancellation, or rerouting; unexpected phone calls; loss of Android Auto functionality; freezing or failure to respond to the driver's actual input; system restarting or turning itself on; interference with other vehicle settings. These behaviors can occur while the vehicle is moving or sitting still.

The entire monitor is experiencing "ghost touch" issues. While driving, the monitor rapidly changes screens beeping each time. It will throw you out of bluetooth into a random radio station. It switches from screen to screen beeping each time. It is extremely distracting while driving. In my opinion, the distraction is hazardous. It has been to dealer, I have also filed a case with Honda Case # 16523872). Dealer had it for 3 days, did nothing, said there are no parts available to fix it. They said sometimes this means Honda is working on a recall but they have no way of knowing for sure. Honda has NOT issued a recall. Honda Case Manager confirms they are "still working on it". This all started 6 weeks ago and car monitor continues to experience the "ghost touch" issue

The infotainment screen experiences “ghost touches” where random controls are pushed without a person actually touching it. It will switch views (maps to radio to settings), turn itself off and on, and becomes a major driver distraction and at times a safety hazard. Distraction? Quickly changing audio sources one after another. One second you hear map directions, then AM radio, Sirius XM, FM radio, etc…all changing rapidly. Safety hazard? Beyond the distraction, if one is using maps to navigate in the city, the system will leave maps to bounce to other views and sources leaving you with no directions or possibly delayed instructions. Honda has no fix. Dealer says if they can’t duplicate it they can’t do anything. This happens at very random times. A system reset can fix it temporarily, but it always comes back. A system reset requires you to stop, turn the vehicle off and know the exact convoluted procedure.

On February 21, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE22003) to assess reports of inadvertent activation of the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system, in model year 2017-2019 Honda CR-V and 2018-2019 Honda Accord vehicles. The reports allege that activation of the AEB system occurs while driving with no apparent obstruction in the vehicle's forward path, resulting in sudden vehicle deceleration. Honda indicated that they were aware of a total of X,XXX reports that may relate to the alleged defect. Honda provided analysis of the alleged defect and alleges that some customers possibly had an inadequate understanding of the CMBS and its limitations. However, many consumer complaints allege that Honda dealerships were unable to reproduce the condition or state that they were informed that this is considered normal CMBS operation. To date, ODI has received a total of 1,294 consumer complaints of inadvertent activation of CMBS in 2017-2022 Honda CR-V and 2018-2022 Honda Accord vehicles. A total of 31 complaints alleged a crash and 50 alleged an injury. The Total column in the Failure Report Summary removes duplicate reports and shows the total number of reports with unique VINs from all Manufacturer, ODI, and EWR data sources. In some cases, there were multiple reports associated with a particular vehicle in which recurring failures were alleged. In total, there were X,XXX reports, 93 injury incidents and 47 crashes involving vehicles with unique VINs that may relate to the alleged defect. PE22-003 has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis to further assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety related consequences of the inadvertent AEB activations. The scope has been expanded to include assessment of model year 2020-2022 Honda CR-V and Accord vehicles.
