ON CERTAIN PULL TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH AIR RIDE SUSPENSIONS, THE INTEGRITY OF THE WELD SEQUENCING COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN CRACKING AT THE REAR OF THE SUSPENSION FRAME.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: SUCH A CRACK, IF LEFT UNATTENDED COULD PROGRESS TO AN ABRUPT FAILURE IN THE DOLLY FRAME. FAILURE TO HAVE THE UNIT UPGRADED COULD RESULT IN A CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL UPGRADE THE WELDING WHICH INVOLVES THE ADDITION OF A STEEL BAR TO REINFORCE THE FRAME STRUCTURE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 16, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HEIL AT 1-800-400-6913, EXTENSION 353 OR 574.

ODI DETERMINED THAT TWO SUBJECT TRAILERS EXPERIENCED COMPLETE FRAME SEPARATIONS. HEIL HAD INITIATED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM, WHICH PAID FOR THE COMPLETE REPAIR OF ALL SUBJECT TRAILERS.GIVEN THAT THE SUBJECT TRAILERS WERE FUEL TANKERS, ODI WAS CONCERNED ABOUT HEIL'S DECISION TO CONDUCT A FIELD ACTION IN LIEU OF A SAFETY RECALL.AFTER REVIEWING HEIL'S PRIOR RECALL HISTORY AND DISCUSSING THE FAILURES WITH INVOLVED FLEETS, ODI CONTACTED HEIL TO DISCUSS THE MATTER.DURING OUR DISCUSSION, THE SAFETY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH A 6,000 GALLON GASOLINE TANKER SEPARATING FROM THE TOW BAR MECHANISM WERE DISCUSSED. AS A RESULT, HEIL DECIDED TO CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL.
