While driving my 2022 GMC Yukon Denali at interstate highway speed, the engine suddenly failed without any prior warning. At the time of the incident, the vehicle had approximately 65,000 miles. There were no warning lights illuminated before or during the failure. The engine immediately began running rough, produced abnormal knocking/ticking noise, and then completely lost power. This created a dangerous situation, as I was traveling at highway speed and suddenly could not maintain speed with surrounding traffic. I had to quickly maneuver out of traffic and safely reach the shoulder to avoid a potential accident. Due to the complete loss of engine power, the vehicle was inoperable and had to be towed from the scene. The vehicle has been properly maintained and has not had any prior mechanical issues. I contacted a dealership, but as of now, the vehicle has not yet been inspected or diagnosed. Based on the symptoms, the failure appears consistent with a lifter-related engine issue reported in similar vehicles. The sudden and complete loss of power without warning presents a serious safety concern.

The engine (6.2L L87 V8) failed at approximately 85,000 miles. The failure was diagnosed as internal engine damage and the engine assembly was replaced. The failed engine is available to the manufacturer through the dealer as part of the repair process. The failure resulted in a complete loss of propulsion at highway speeds on the interstate, requiring immediate deceleration and maneuvering to a safe location, which created a safety risk to occupants and surrounding traffic. The condition was confirmed by a GM dealer using diagnostic procedures, including a Pico scope test, which verified internal engine failure. The engine was replaced under GM safety recall / special coverage related to L87 engine failure. The vehicle was inspected and repaired by an authorized GM dealership as part of the recall remedy. Prior to failure, there were no warning lights or messages. The only symptom was increasing engine noise and knocking from the lower end shortly before the loss of power. Failure occurred during normal driving conditions with proper maintenance. No crash, fire, or injury occurred.

The dealer diagnosed a collapsed lifter and camshaft damage and recommended full engine replacement at a cost of about $9,450. The vehicle had no prior engine issues and most miles are highway miles. Sudden engine failure while driving creates a potential safety hazard due to loss of power. I am reporting this because I understand there are ongoing investigations into GM V8 engine failures and I believe this failure may be related.

At 27, 000 miles while on vacation, over 1000 miles from home, the lifters and bearings grenaded the motor. The vehicle sat at the dealership for a month waiting for a motor replacement. This could have been much worse as we had just driven through mountains the day before. Had this happened in the mountains this could have been deadly. The engine was replaced, but we have no faith in the new engine as these are failing also. This is unacceptable for any vehicle, let alone an $85,000 Yukon. We have also had several issues with water leaking in from the sunroof also. Gm's solution to me basically missing 3 and a half days of a 7 day vacation was to give me enough gm points to get a free oil change. The dealership was great to deal with, the people I dealt with at GM were not very helpful at all.

Gateway system module failed during the L87 recall service.The major L87 recall (ECM update) is a major, high-load software update that frequently causes the Gateway Module to "brick" or stop communicating during the update process resulting in failed module immediately following the service. (TSB) speak to this, The L87 recall is a safety-critical repair, a failure of a module directly caused by this repair should be covered under a recall warranty or GM warranty. Safety can be affected as warning lights will not work due to this failure. Timeline of events. As soon as warranty service was completed before leaving bay lights were not working like Onstar etc, app wouldnt connect to car, 1-2 hours after leaving service engine light came on in car. Never had an engine light on before. Took back to dealer who said it was a computer issue they corrected it. 2 hours later engine light was back on. My car has been at the dealer since Monday when they called to say the GSM had internal failure and wanted to charge me to replace it despite this internal failure being in response to the warranty service that was provided, There are Technical service bulletins about this issue, this has been a known issue with GM vehicles, My timeline shows strong evidence that the failure is a direct result of the recall repair. There is GM TechLink documentation that these modules can be ruined if the update process creates a high load. GM needs to extend the GSM repair/recall or extend coverage for this repair when this happens. This is just another thing GM is not taking responsibility for.

Full Description: On February 18, 2026, my GMC Yukon Denali experienced a sudden and complete loss of propulsion while we were on the on-ramp to a high-speed, heavy-traffic expressway. The engine failed without warning as traffic was accelerating rapidly around us. My husband, my [XXX] son, and I were all in the vehicle on our way to celebrate my son’s birthday. Instead, the vehicle died in one of the most dangerous locations possible — the merge zone of a busy highway — leaving us stranded with cars coming at full speed. Traffic immediately began backing up for a long stretch behind us. Drivers were honking, yelling, and aggressively swerving because the lane was blocked by our stalled vehicle. The situation felt chaotic and frightening. I genuinely believed we were at risk of being rear-ended at highway speed. We felt helpless waiting for police to arrive to protect us. The emotional distress, panic, and fear for my family’s safety were overwhelming. My son was shaking and visibly upset on what was supposed to be his birthday celebration. None of us felt safe until law enforcement was able to block traffic. After the incident, the dealership confirmed that the failure was caused by the GM L87 engine defect currently under recall and stated that the engine needed to be completely replaced. This sudden stall created a severe safety hazard that could have easily resulted in a catastrophic crash, injury, or worse. It has had a lasting emotional impact on me and my family. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023. The rivet that retains the buckle to the mounting bracket in the left or right side third-row seat belt buckle assembly may have been improperly formed.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A seat belt with a deformed rivet may not properly restrain an occupant, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the rivet head formation on both the left and right side third-row seat belt buckle assemblies and replace seat belt buckle assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed September 28, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 1, 2022. ODI has received complaints alleging engine failure in vehicles after the recall remedy had been completed, whether that remedy involved an oil viscosity change or a complete engine replacement. General Motors (GM) issued Recall 25V-274 to address concerns of engine failure in the L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issue. GM’s recall remedy for Recall 25V-274 consisted of two different repairs, either an oil viscosity change or an engine replacement, based on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. ODI continues to receive reports of engine failures after the completion of the recall remedy. To date, ODI has received 499 complaints alleging post-remedy engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V-274, 473 of which involved an oil viscosity change and 26 a complete engine replacement. On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007).
