I am a Canadian owner of a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 equipped with the 6.2L L87 engine. VIN: [XXX]. I purchased the vehicle new. I am reporting this because my experience appears directly relevant to NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA26005 concerning L87 engine failures after Recall 25V-274 remedies. The GM recall remedy/oil change was performed at 103,503 km (64,315 mi). At 130,695 km (81,210 mi), the original engine suffered a catastrophic failure and completely seized. The engine could not even be rotated manually at the crankshaft. GM replaced the complete engine. At 142,541 km (88,571 mi), only 11,846 km (7,361 mi) later, I returned for the first oil change on the replacement engine. I told the dealer that the vehicle was behaving abnormally, especially the transmission, which was shifting strangely. After inspection, the dealer determined that the replacement engine was beginning to seize. The increased resistance from the engine was causing the abnormal transmission behavior. The complete engine was replaced AGAIN. The vehicle now has 148,560 km (92,310 mi), meaning this second replacement/third engine has only about 6,019 km (3,740 mi). I am again noticing symptoms similar to those that occurred before the previous engine failure. I cannot confirm that this engine will fail, but after two previous engine failures, I am very concerned. This vehicle has therefore had two L87 engines: the original engine and one replacement. One replacement engine itself began seizing after less than 12,000 km. I believe these repeated failures after both the recall remedy and a complete engine replacement are directly relevant to EA26005 and the safety risk of sudden loss of propulsion. I have GM/dealer repair orders documenting the recall service and both engine replacements and can provide them upon request. Truck went into limo mode while driving and required valve in transmission to be replaced. Went from driving normal speed to only being able to go about 15 miles and hour. Was repaired got the truck back and the next day was on the interstate in the fast lane and the truck again had speed issue reduced speed and had to coast off interstate. This time entire valve body had to be replaced. Have gotten truck back and still have hard shifting in the transmission at times. Engine was checked for recall and now I have to pay a much higher oil change price due to a GM issue. This was not a known cost when purchasing this truck.

During a family camping trip, our engine seized without warning — a failure directly tied to an active GMC recall. Despite this being a manufacturer defect, GMC roadside assistance refused to provide full support and informed us that we were responsible for towing our trailer home. This placed an unreasonable financial and logistical burden on us during an already distressing situation. To make situation worse when we brought the vehicle to O’Meara GMC for the recall repair Four months prior.They kept our truck for an entire week, only to inform us that their “solution” was to put heavier-weight oil in the engine. This is not a recall repair. It is not a fix. It is a temporary workaround that demonstrates clear incompetence and an inability or unwillingness to replace the motor as required under the recall. O’Meara GMC failed to perform the recall repair, failed to replace the engine, and failed to provide any meaningful resolution. Their actions have left us with a vehicle that is unsafe, unreliable, and not repaired according to GMC’s own recall standards.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and an oil message was displayed. The vehicle stalled and was unable to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. Literally had just enough clearance to get on the side of road where vehicles drive-55-65 mph. Avenal, Ca to be exact. What’s the best way to get my money back? I own a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate equipped with the 6.2L L87 V8 engine. The vehicle previously experienced an engine failure that resulted in the complete replacement of the 6.2L engine by an authorized GMC dealership. The replacement engine was installed at approximately 76,316 miles. After approximately 1,000 miles of driving with the replacement engine, at approximately 77,354 miles, the vehicle displayed a check-engine/service warning and experienced abnormal transmission shifting. I returned the vehicle to the GMC dealership for diagnosis. The dealer documented DTC P0747, identified as “Transmission Control Solenoid Valve 1 Stuck On,” and recommended replacement of the transmission control valve body at a quoted cost of $2,665.85 plus tax. The dealership has stated that this transmission condition is unrelated to the recent engine replacement. However, because the condition appeared only approximately 1,000 miles after a complete engine replacement, I have asked General Motors to investigate whether the current failure could be associated with the previous engine failure, the engine replacement procedure, or other related vehicle systems. I have opened a case with General Motors Customer Assistance and have deferred the customer-paid valve-body repair while GM reviews the matter. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA/ODI has a record that this vehicle experienced a major 6.2L L87 engine failure requiring complete engine replacement and then, approximately 1,000 miles after that replacement, developed a check-engine warning, abnormal transmission operation, DTC P0747, and a condition requiring replacement of the transmission control valve body. I can provide the engine-replacement repair order, current diagnostic documentation, mileage records, dealer repair estimate, and GM case information upon request.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023. On January 16, 2026, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ26001.  This investigation was opened to assess the remedy effectiveness of Recall 25V-274. ODI has received complaints alleging engine failure in vehicles after the recall remedy had been completed, whether that remedy involved an oil viscosity change or a complete engine replacement. General Motors (GM) issued Recall 25V-274 to address concerns of engine failure in the L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issue. GM’s recall remedy for Recall 25V-274 consisted of two different repairs, either an oil viscosity change or an engine replacement, based on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. ODI continues to receive reports of engine failures after the completion of the recall remedy. To date, ODI has received 499 complaints alleging post-remedy engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V-274, 473 of which involved an oil viscosity change and 26 a complete engine replacement. Additionally, ODI has received 191 reports of L87 engine failures in engines produced after the production period cited in Recall 25V-274. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001).  GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024.  GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s  recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007). Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:hard Parts Internal/mechanical

On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024.  GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s  recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007).
