VEHICLE EXPERIENCING ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE. HOWEVER, RECALL NOTICE (99V-193) EXPLAINS THE SAME FAILURE CONSUMER EXPERIENCING. *YC
ABS BRAKES CONSISTANTLY INTERMITANTLY KICK IN DELAYING STOP TIME- ONGOING PROBLEM- DEALERS CANNOT FIND DEFECT- SOMETIMES ANTILOCK LIGHT FLASHES--NO CODES ARE STORED- HAVE REPLACED SENSORS ON WHEELS AND CLEANED BRAKE DUST FROM REAR-- NO CHANGE.
WHEN DRIVING AT 50 TO 60MPH AND APPLYING THE BRAKES THE RIGHT FRONT WHEELS LOCKED UP, AND THE ONLY WAY TO UNLOCK THEM WAS TO PUT IN REVERSE. DEALER COULDN'T FIND THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. HAS HAPPENED FIVE TIMES. *AK

CATASTROPHIC ABS FAILURE AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED LIGHTLY TO ADJUST SPEED IN TRAFFIC, ABS PUMP ACTIVIATES, LOCKING BRAKE PEDAL IN THE UP POSITION WHILE NOT SLOWING VEHICLE. ABS SYSTEM CONTINUES PEDAL LOCKOUT UNTIL VEHICLE ROLLS TO A COMPLETE STOP. DEALER INDICATES ABS FAILURE, RECOMMENDS DISCONNECTING ABS.
THE DEFECTIVE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GO TO THE FLOOR AND EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. ALSO, THE BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. DEALER REPLACED 4 ABS BRAKING SYSTEM. EACH TIME THE SAME PROBLEMS REOCCURRED. *AK *ML

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN 4-WHEEL DRIVE PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ABS (ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM) MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 1989 THROUGH AUGUST 1996. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS THE SWITCH WHICH SIGNALS THE ABS SYSTEM WHETHER THE VEHICLE IS IN 2-WHEEL OR 4-WHEEL DRIVE CAN MALFUNCTION CAUSING INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES DURING ABS STOPS WHILE IN THE TWO-WHEEL DRIVE MODE.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: IF THIS OCCURRED AT A TIME WHEN MINIMUM STOPPING DISTANCE WAS REQUIRED, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE OR REPAIR THE 4-WHEEL/2-WHEEL DRIVE SWITCH.
