THIS IS FOR A 2015 FOREST RIVER SHASTA AIRFLYTE REISSUE 19 FOOT TRAVEL TRAILER, PRODUCTION # 1301. I BELIEVE THE OEM LEAF SUSPENSION SYSTEM AND PASSENGER TIRES ARE UNSAFE AND WILL LEAD TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, INJURY, OR DEATH. THE WHEEL WELL CLEARANCE IS NOT SUFFICIENT FOR THE OEM TIRES AND LEAF SUSPENSION SYSTEM ON THE TRAILER. ALSO, THE OEM TIRES ARE COKER WHITEWALL PASSENGER VEHICLE TIRES. I BELIEVE TRAVEL TRAILERS MUST BE MANUFACTURED WITH OEM TRAILER/CARGO TIRES WHICH HAVE STIFFER SIDEWALLS. I WAS UNAWARE OF THESE CONCERNS UNTIL AN ONLINE FORUM RECOMMENDED I CHECK MY TRAILER. I HAD RECENTLY COMPLETED AN APPROXIMATELY 1,000 MILE ROUND TRIP AND WHEN I CHECKED MY TRAILER UPON RETURN, I FOUND THE TIRES HAD BEEN RUBBING THE WHEEL WELLS BOTH ON TOP OF THE TIRES AND ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRES. THE LEFT TIRE HAS ALREADY EXHIBITED TROUBLING SIDEWALL WEAR ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE.. THERE IS LESS THAN 2 INCHES OF CLEARANCE BETWEEN TOP OF TIRES AND WHEEL WELL AND LESS THAN 1 INCH CLEARANCE BETWEEN INSIDE OF TIRES AND WHEEL WELL. FOREST RIVER SHASTA HAS A WARRANTY REPAIR WHICH REPLACES THE REAR LEAF SPRING SHACKLES WITH ONES THAT ARE LONGER BUT THIS ONLY INCREASES THE ABOVE TIRE CLEARANCE BY ANOTHER INCH. THIS DOES NOTHING TO ADDRESS THE INSIDE CLEARANCE OF THE TIRE TO THE WHEEL WELL. WITH THE OEM SUSPENSION SYSTEM, THE TRAILER EXHIBITS EXCESSIVE SWAY EVEN WITH AN AFTERMARKET PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED CURT ANTI-SWAY KIT. I FEAR THE WARRANTY INSTALLED LONGER LEAF SPRING SHACKLES COUPLED WITH THE COKER PASSENGER TIRES WILL ONLY AGGRAVATE THE EXCESSIVE SWAY ISSUE. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, FOREST RIVER SHASTA HAS NOT ISSUED A SAFETY RECALL FOR THIS CONDITION.

I HAVE A SHASTA AIRFLYTE REISSUE AND WHEN RECEIVING IT FROM THE DEALER AND TOWING IT HOME, I FOUND THAT THE TIRES HAD RUBBED THE WHEEL WELL. THERE WAS ONLY ABOUT AN INCH OF CLEARANCE AT THE TOP AND ONLY ABOUT 1/2 INCH ON THE INSIDE WALL OF THE WHEEL WELL. THE DRIVER SIDE, OR ROAD SIDE IS CLOSER THAN THE PASSENGER SIDE?? SHASTA, THRU THE DEALER, PUT A BANANA SHACKLE ON TO RAISE THE CLEARANCE. I STILL ONLY HAVE 1 3/4" ON DRIVER SIDE, AND 2 1/4" ON PASSENGER SIDE, AND ABOUT 1" ON THE INSIDE WALL. THE PROBLEM SEEMS THAT THE SPRINGS ARE CHEAP, FROM CHINA, AND FLAT. ADDING A SHACKLE DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM, JUST MAKES MORE SWAY. THE WHEELS ARE OFFSET MAKING THE TIRES COME CLOSER TO THE INSIDE WALL, AND THE TIRES AND WHEELS ARE FOR PASSENGER CARS, WHICH ARE NOT SAFE EITHER.

AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE WAS LESS THAN ONE INCH FROM BOTH OF THE SIDE TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE DEALER REACHED OUT TO THE FOR MANUFACTURER FOR GUIDANCE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE SOLUTION FOR THIS FAILURE WAS TO PLACE BANANA SHAPED SHACKLES TO ADD CLEARANCE SPACE FROM THE TIRES AND WHEEL WELL. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE REMEDY PROPOSED BY THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT SUFFICE TO DETER THE ISSUE. AFTER THE CONTACT RECEIVED THE VEHICLE BACK, SHE TEST DROVE IT FOR FOUR HOURS AND NOTICED THAT THE TIRES STILL SCRAPED ALONG THE WHEEL WELLS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTED THAT THE CAMPER WAS ONLY EQUIPPED WITH ONE AXLE AND THE MANUFACTURER FACTORY EQUIPPED PASSENGER TIRES ON THE VEHICLE AND NOT THE STANDARD TRAILER TIRES. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTED THAT THE LEAF SPRING WAS FLAT AND ALREADY SHOWED SIGNS OF CORROSION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 300.

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Coachmen Shasta SHT27RL travel trailers manufactured May 7, 2013, to May 7, 2015. The affected trailers may have an incorrect gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) information stated on the Federal Weight Tags. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Incorrect GVWR information on the label may lead the operator to load the trailer to an incorrect weight, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy: Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will replace the incorrect label with a corrected label, free of charge. The recall began on June 23, 2015. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-825-8717. Forest River's number for this recall is 53-05132015-0035.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation after receipt of Defect Petition ES15-004654.The petition alleged eleven (11) separate issues.Six (6) of the issues related to vehicle design or construction.The other five (5) related to corporate safety culture.ODI considered each issue separately during it's evaluation.An outline of the issues follows.Additional details are included in the attached Evaluation Report.Four (4) issues were addressed with recalls: Window failuresRecall 15V-553 Wheel well/Suspension/RimsRecall 15V-552 Passenger tire failures Recall 15V-369 Dinette bed failures Recall 16V-218One (1) issue was addressed with a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB). Body separation from frame.OEM TSB # 53-05112016-0191.One (1) issue, Door Lock Failures, was not considered a safety issue as NFPA Standard 1192 requires multiplemeans of egress.The remaining five (5) issues, listed below, were either directly or indirectly addressed by a Consent Order issued July 8, 2015.
