THE STRUTS THAT SHOULD SUPPORT THE REAR HATCH IN THE OPEN POSITION HAVE NEVER WORKED, SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE ON JANUARY 30, 1996. I LEARNED JUST LAST NIGHT, FROM YAHOO.COM, THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM ON 1993 FORD PROBES. I HAVE CONTACTED BOTH MY DEALER AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY BY PHONE. THE DEALER SAYS THEY HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF ANY SUCH RECALL. FMC SAYS THE RECALL APPLIES TO SOME 1993 PROBES, BUT NOT TO MINE AS DETERMINED FROM MY VIN. I HAVE BEEN HURT A FEW TIMES BECAUSE OF THIS UNSAFE CONDITION, BUT MY INJURIES SO FAR HAVE BEEN MINOR AND HAVE NOT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION.

HATCHBACK ASSEMBLY STRUTS MALFUNCTIONS, CAUSING THE HATCHBACK TO FALL UNEXPECTEDLY, ALMOST CAUSING INJURIES. RECALL # 93V05800, MANUFACTURER STATED THIS VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT ARE HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. *AK

TRUNK RELEASED WHILE DRIVER WAS RESETTING THE FUEL CUT-OFF SWITCH, CAUSING INJURY. *SD

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE LOWER PIVOT PIN THAT JOINS THE LIFTGATE GAS STRUT TO THE BODY CAN SEPARATE FROM THE LOWER STRUT MOUNTING BRACKET DUE TO AN UNDERSIZED RIVET HEAD.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: PIVOT PIN SEPARATION CAUSES THE LIFTGATE TO DESCEND SUDDENLY, RESULTING IN AN INJURY IF SOMEONE IS STRUCK BY THE LIFTGATE.
Remedy: REPLACE LIFTGATE STRUT ASSEMBLIES HAVING UNDERSIZED PIVOT PIN RIVET HEAD DIAMETERS WITH ASSEMBLIES WITH ADEQUATE PIVOT PIN RIVET HEADS.
