I HAD YET ANOTHER "STOP SAFELY NOW" WARNING IN WHICH THE CAR COMPLETELY LOST POWER TO THE DRIVETRAIN WHILE IN MOTION. I HAD PREVIOUSLY TAKEN IN THE CAR FOR THE RECALL IN JANUARY AND WAS TOLD THAT WOULD RESOLVE THE ISSUE, BUT THE PROBLEM HAS POPPED UP AGAIN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING TO HAPPEN TO HAVE A CAR SUDDENLY LOSE ALL POWER WHILE DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. FORD HAS CLEARLY NOT FIXED THIS PROBLEM YET.

THERE WAS NO POWER LEFT IN MY ELECTRIC VEHICLE, SO I COASTED OVER TO THE SHOULDER. THE CAR WOULDN'T DRIVE. CAR WAS TOWED TO FORD, WHERE IT HAS TAKEN OVER 2 WEEKS, AND THEY ARE STATING THE WHOLE MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE ARE ONLY 17,000 MILES ON THIS CAR. I "GOOGLED" THE "PULL OVER SAFELY" ALERT, AND HAVE FOUND THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR FOR MANY PEOPLE, AND THAT FORD HAD RECALLED OVER 2,000 FORD FOCUS EV CARS, MODEL YEARS 2011-2013, FOR THIS EXACT REASON.

EVERY TIME IT GETS TOWED OR I TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY TELL ME THEY HAVE UPDATED THE COMPUTER SYSTEM AND IT SHOULD BE FINE. FORD'S CORPORATE OFFICE HAS SAID RESULTS ARE INCONCLUSIVE AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO HELP ME. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ONLINE, IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE.

ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2015, WHILE MY SON WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH IN THE CARPOOL LANE, THE CAR SUDDENLY STALLED ON HIM AND LOSS ALL POWER TO THE CAR. A MESSAGE POPPED UP ON THE DASH IN AN ORANGE TRIANGLE STATED "STOP SAFELY NOW". SINCE HE WAS IN THE CARPOOL LANE, HE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET THE CAR OFF TO THE SIDE. HE WAS STRANDED IN A BUSY CARPOOL LANE AND ALMOST GOT REAR END FROM BEHIND WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY CUT OFF ALL POWER AND CAME TO A STOP. THIS HAS PUT MY SON IN A GREAT DANGER SITUATION!!! HE COULD HAVE GOT REAR ENDED AND THE STALLING OF THE CAR COULD HAVE CAUSED A MULTI-CARS ACCIDENT IN THE CARPOOL LANE ON THE FREEWAY. SOMEHOW HE MANAGED TO ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AFTER TURNING THE CAR ON, OFF AND OPENING THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR AND CLOSING IT SEVERAL TIME. THE CAR CONTINUE TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON AND OFF FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. WE FINALLY GOT THE CAR INTO FORD DEALERSHIP SEPTEMBER 24, 2015. AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT, FORD DEALERSHIP HAS NOT CALL ME WITH A CAUSE FOR THE ISSUE. I ALSO NOTED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR A SIMILAR ISSUE THAT WAS ISSUED FROM FORD FOR THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE FOR MODEL 2012 TO 2014. THE SERVICEMAN AT FORD DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT ON THAT RECALL LIST YET MY SON STILL ENCOUNTERED THE SAME ISSUE THAT WAS DESCRIBED IN THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION REPORT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. I DONT THINK FORD HAS DONE ENOUGH TO CORRECT THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM.

MY WIFE WAS BARELY ABLE TO PULL OVER AND WE WERE UNABLE TO GET THE CAR MOVING AGAIN, EVENTUALLY TOWING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. WHEN WE PICKED THE CAR UP THEY STATED THAT A CONNECTION TO THE HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY CAME LOOSE AND THEY'VE FIXED IT. YESTERDAY, WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START THE CAR, THE SAME WARNING MESSAGE CAME ON AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. WE ONCE AGAIN HAVE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER CALLED ME THIS MORNING SAYING THE CAR "WORKS FINE" WHICH MAKES ME MORE CONCERNED SINCE CLEARLY THIS ISSUE IS NOW TOTALLY UNPREDICTABLE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE "STOP SAFELY NOW" (SSN) FLASHED ON THE DASH AND THE CAR STARTED BEEPING. I SLOWED DOWN AND WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE ROAD. THE CAR THEN DIED AND WAS INOPERABLE. I GOT OUT TO LOOK AROUND THE CAR AND MAKE SURE THERE WERE NO FLAT TIRES - EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES - I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR AND IT WORKED AS USUAL. THE CAR SEEMED FINE SO I KEPT DRIVING IT WITHOUT INCIDENT UNTIL JANUARY 6TH, 2015 WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE 3 KIDS HOME FROM SCHOOL - THE BATTERY HAD 75% ON IT AND THE SSN FLASHED ON MY DASHBOARD. I SLOWED DOWN COMING TO A LIGHT - AND THE CAR WENT COMPLETELY DEAD - I TRIED TO MOVE IT OUT OF THE LANE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD - BUT THERE WAS NO POWER TO DO THAT. WE WERE STOPPED IN THE LANE OF A BUSY 4 LANE ROAD. THERE WAS NO WAY AROUND OUR CAR WITHOUT CARS MERGING INTO THE OTHER LANE. IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE FOR OUR FAMILY. I CALLED AAA TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. I TRIED EVERY FEW MINUTES TO START THE CAR - BUT IT WOULDN'T WORK. FINALLY AFTER 15 MINUTES - I STARTED THE CAR AND IT ACTED AS IF NOTHING WAS WRONG. I DROVE THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THE CODE POA0A: 01-08-PCM SHOWED - THEY RESET IT AND SAID NO NEW CODE CAME UP WHEN THEY TEST DROVE IT. NOW A WEEK LATER - I AM DRIVING THE CAR ON 1/14/15 AND THE SSN COME ON AGAIN. I SLOW DOWN - THE CAR WON'T MOVE OR RESTART. I WAIT 10 MINUTES. THE CAR STARTED AND I DROVE IT BACK TO THE DEALER - THE SAME CODE APPEARED. THEY RESET IT - BUT NOW WANT TO KEEP THE CAR UNTIL THEY CAN GET IT TO STALL ON THEM. THERE IS VERY LITTLE TIME FROM WHEN THE SSN FLASHED AND BEEPS TO PULL OF THE ROAD AND GET OUT OF HARMS WAY. THE LAST 2 TIMES IT HAPPENED I WAS STUCK IN THE LANE OF TRAFFIC AND COULD NOT MOVE THE CAR. *TR

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time. Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Electrical System:propulsion System:traction Battery

In an October 28, 2013 letter to NHTSA, Ford Motor Company (Ford) submitted a recall notice identifying a defect in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software in approximately 2,456 model year (MY) 2012 through 2014 Ford Focus Electric vehicles manufactured from September 15, 2011 through August 23, 2013 (Recall No. 13V-523).According to Ford, PCM software faults may cause a complete loss of powertrain torque. When this condition occurs, drivers receive a red triangle indicator and the message Stop Safely Now in the instrument cluster. In addition, vehicle brake and steering systems will continue to operate normally and the vehicle can be restarted after going through a shutdown process.Ford and its supplier, Magna Powertrain, upgraded the PCM software to address powertrain shutdown conditions and issued a technical service bulletin on September 23, 2013 instructing dealers to reprogram the PCM on all affected vehicles. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by Ford as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 171 unique reports indicating loss of motive power while driving, and the predominant failure mode identified involved loss of powertrain torque.Ford began owner notification on November 5, 2012.Owners of the recalled vehicles are notified to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer who will reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration. See the investigative public file for copies of Ford's bulletin and owner letter. This preliminary evaluation is closed. The ODI reports cited above can be viewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers (ODI Nos.): 10536160,10534988,10534323,10531894,10525393,10525187,10523536,10521207,10516270,10512459,10512146,10509307,10543015,10542983,10542840,10542753,10538223,10537801,10537111,10537048,10536894,10536592,10536538,10536510,10526350,10524026,10522585,10521986,10521459,10519446,10545282.
