THE VEHICLE HAD AN ABNORMAL IDLE WHILE AT A STOP, AND WOULD SOMETIMES STALL. UPON ACCELERATION THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE AND JERK FORWARD. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO RECTIFY THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE MECHANIC CLEARED THE CODE FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, BUT THE INTERNAL WIRING HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, ON A CAR THAT WAS A LITTLE OVER 2 YEARS OLD. THE INTERNAL WIRING HARNESS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY TYPE OF WARRANTY. THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED AT A COST TO ME OF $245.99. LESS THAN 2 MONTHS LATER, THE VEHICLE WAS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES, ABNORMAL IDLE, STALLING, AND HESITANT AND JERKY ACCELERATING. AGAIN, I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH FRONT SEALS, INPUT SEALS, AND AXLES SEALS, CHANGED TRANSMISSION FLUID, ADDED 2 QUARTS OF TRANSMISSION DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION FLUID. THIS REPAIR WAS COVERED UNDER THE FORD 5 YEAR, 60,000 MILE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. ABOUT 5 WEEKS LATER I WAS STILL HAVING THE SAME ISSUES, ABNORMAL IDLE, HESITANT AND JERKY ACCELERATION. AGAIN, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME I WAS TOLD THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WITH NO CHOICE, I NEED TO GET TO WORK, I TOLD THEM TO GO AHEAD WITH THE REPAIR WHICH ONCE AGAIN WAS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY TYPE OF WARRANTY. THE TOTAL FOR THIS REPAIR COST ME $720.26. IN LESS THAN 3 YEARS I HAVE HAD TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR MAJOR REPAIRS 3 TIMES AND SPENT JUST UNDER $1,000, PLUS THE INCONVENIENCE OF RENTAL CARS, DAYS OFF OF WORK, AND THE GENERAL ANNOYANCE OF KNOWING MY NEW VEHICLE HAS MAJOR MECHANICAL ISSUES. *TR

SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING MY 2012 FORD FIESTA (NEW) IN DECEMBER, 2012, IT BEGAN SHUDDERING WHEN CHANGING BETWEEN GEARS. IT ALSO MADE A "RATTLING" NOISE WHEN ACCELERATING OR SOMETIMES EVEN WHEN CRUISING AT A STEADY SPEED. THE FIRST TIME I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY KEPT IT FOR A FEW DAYS BUT TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE SECOND TIME I BROUGHT IT (OCTOBER, 2013, APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES) THEY KEPT IT FOR A WEEK AND TOLD ME THERE WAS SOMETHING LEAKING ON TO THE CLUTCH AND THEY FIXED IT. NOW, AT 57,000 MILES, THE CAR IS SHUDDERING WORSE THAN EVER, PARTICULARLY BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND GEARS, AND THE RATTLING NOISE HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. PEOPLE RIDING WITH ME CONSTANTLY ASK WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WRONG WITH MY CAR. I FINALLY BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE IT HAS NOW BEEN FOR TWO WEEKS. THEY'VE CALLED TWICE - THE FIRST TIME TO SAY THAT THEY WERE GOING TO HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION, SO IT WOULD BE A WHILE LONGER BEFORE IT WAS REPAIRED. THE SECOND TIME WAS A WEEK AGO WHEN THEY SAID FORD HAD SOMETHING THEY WANTED THEM TO TRY (NOT SURE WHAT EXACTLY IT WAS). HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THEM SINCE. I'M FEARFUL THAT AT LESS THAN 60,000 MILES I'M GOING TO HAVE A VEHICLE THAT A) CAN NEVER BE FULLY REPAIRED AND B) IS POSSIBLY UNSAFE. AND CERTAINLY I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO SELL IT OR GET ANY MONEY FOR IT, WHO WANTS TO PURCHASE A USED VEHICLE THAT HAS A REPUTATION FOR SO MANY PROBLEMS, AS BOTH THE FIESTA AND THE FOCUS DO. *TR

I LEASED A 2012 FORD FIESTA IN MARCH 2012. SHORTLY AFTER, I CONTACTED MY DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT ABOUT GRINDING/KNOCKING NOISES WHEN I ACCELERATE. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NORMAL FOR THE "NEW" TRANSMISSION IN THE FIESTAS. THE NOISES GOT LOUDER AND MORE FREQUENT SO I TOOK IT IN. THEY HEARD NOISES AND SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. MULTIPLE TRIPS TO SERVICE, HAD PARTS CHANGED WITH NO CHANGE IN NOISES. ON ONE APPOINTMENT, FOUND THEY HAD TO PULL MY TRANSMISSION FOR MULTIPLE LEAKS, NEW SEALS, ETC. CAR WAS OK FOR A LITTLE WHILE, BUT CONCERNS BACK WITH NOISES, JOLTING, JERKING, LACK OF ACCELERATION. DEALERSHIP WOULD TAKE IT OUT AND SAY THEY EXPERIENCED WHAT I HAD BEEN SAYING, BUT NOTHING THEY COULD DO. ACCORDING TO FORD, IT WAS OPERATING WITHIN NORMAL PARAMETERS. AFTER SOME TIME, THEY WOULD NOT TAKE THE CAR BACK AGAIN FOR SERVICE SO I BEGAN GOING ELSEWHERE. AFTER MULTIPLE SERVICE VISITS FOR THE SAME REASONS, I WAS FINALLY INTO SEPTEMBER 2014 AND FINDING THEY HAD TO ORDER ME MY 3RD CLUTCH. I WAITED MONTHS, WITH NO ANSWERS OR EXPLANATION FROM FORD, AND PART FINALLY ARRIVED 1/25/15...5 MONTHS AFTER ORDERING!!!! REPEATED CALLS TO FORD THAT CAR WAS STALLING, SEVERE JERKING, LACK OF ACCELERATION, ETC. AND ALL THEY WOULD SAY IS WORK WITH SERVICE, NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I HAVE READ MANY REVIEWS AND STORIES OF PEOPLE WITH SAME ISSUES, POORLY FUNCTIONING TRANSMISSIONS IN THE FIESTAS AND OTHER MODEL FORDS. FORD REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OF FIXING, THEY JUST EXTEND THE WARRANTY WHICH IS NOT FIXING THE IMMEDIATE PROBLEMS OR KEEP FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO TERMINATE MY LEASE. *TR

I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS WITH THE SAME ISSUES AND SAME RESPONSES FROM THE FORD PEOPLE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! FORD SHOULD TAKE SOME KIND OF RESPONSIBILITY TO THIS ISSUE MY CAR IS SO BAD,MY WIFE IS SCARED TO DRIVE FEARING SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO FILE A LEMON LAW SUIT WITH FORD FOR NEGLIGENCE. I WILL ALSO FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO CONSUMER PROTECTION, NEWS STATIONS AND THE BETTER BUSINESS'S BUREAU AND ANY OTHER CORPORATE SERVICE I CAN. I WOULD LIKE RESPONSE BACK. *TR

20V331000 · Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch

Jun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

15V246000 · Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch

Apr 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) notified the agency on April 23, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured July 1, 2012, to May 31, 2013, and 2012-2014 Fiesta vehicles manufactured February 1, 2012, to May 31, 2013. On April 30, 2015, Ford expanded the recall to cover an additional 119,567 vehicles, including certain model year 2011 Ford Fiestas manufactured from November 11, 2009, to May 31, 2013 and certain model year 2013 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured from February 1, 2012, to June 30, 2012.

Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace all four door latches with an improved part, free of charge. Interim notifications were mailed to owners on June 5, 2015. The recall began on December 18, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S16.

12V488000 · Air Bags

Oct 5, 2012

Ford is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Fiesta vehicles, manufactured from November 3, 2009 through September 21, 2012. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." The passenger side curtain air bag will not deploy in the event of a side impact collision when the front passenger seat is empty. Although the side curtain air bag system was designed to suppress the side curtain air bag under this scenario, that information is not explained in the owner's guide for these vehicles as required by FMVSS No. 208.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An occupant in the right rear seating position will not have coverage from the side curtain air bag in a side impact collision when the front passenger seat is empty, increasing the risk of injury to the right rear occupant.

Remedy: Ford will notify owners and dealers will reprogram the vehicle's software free of charge so that it no longer suppresses the passenger side curtain air bag when the front passenger seat is empty, and consistent with the description in the owner's guide. The safety recall began on October 26, 2012. Owner's may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

RQ19005 · Door Latch Failures

Opened Dec 19, 2019 · Closed Feb 7, 2022

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened an investigation based on consumer allegations of doors failing to latch and/or inadvertently opening on model year (MY) 2011-2013 Ford Fiesta, MY 2013 Ford Fusion and MY 2013 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. All of the affected vehicles share the same door latch design.ODI has received 281 unique reports related to the alleged problem, with over 100 claiming that the door(s) opened inadvertently while the vehicle was in motion. There were no crashes reported however three separate injuries were indicated, all caused by a rebounding door striking a consumer after they attempted to close it. In response to ODI's Information Request (IR) letter, Ford Motor Company (Ford) responded with 1,102 unique reports related to the alleged problem. There were no injury claims but there were two claims of low speed accidents occurring involving the door opening while driving and damaging property. Ford also submitted 10,883 warranty claims related to door latch failures. Many customers indicated that the door would not latch at all and accordingly they decided to restrain the door by other means (looping the seatbelt through the door, or using rope or tape) in order to drive the vehicle. Some customers also reported multiple door latch failures occurring on the same vehicle on different doors occurring months apart. On April 23rd, 2015 Ford notified ODI that it would conduct a safety recall (15V-246) to remedy door latches failures on certain MY 2011-2014 Ford Fiesta and MY 2013-2014 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles.According to Ford, the pawl spring tab located within the door latch can break off, or separate and result in a ?door will not close condition. The recalled vehicles include Fiesta vehiclesmanufactured from the start of the MY 2011 to May 2013 and Fusion and MKZ vehicles manufactured from the start of the MY 2013 year until May 2013.In May 2013 Ford reports that it made a manufacturing quality control change, specific to the spring tab, to improve the performance of the existing part. The door latch spring tab was redesigned and the new latch was phased into production in December 2014 with a new part number.Ford will replace all four door latches on the affected vehicles with the new latch design currently in production. The recall action initiated by the manufacturer appears to address the safety risks of concern to ODI.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the identification (ODI) numbers found in the attached list.

On September 11, 2014 the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE14-028) to investigate claims of doors failing to latch and/or inadvertently opening on model year (MY) 2011-2013 Ford Fiesta vehicles. ODI has received 207 unique reports related to the alleged problem, with sixty-five claiming that the door(s) opened inadvertently while the vehicle was in motion. Two injuries were reported, both caused by a rebounding door striking a consumer after they attempted to close it. In response to ODI's Information Request (IR), Ford Motor Company (Ford) responded with 451 unique reports related to the alleged defect. One claim involved an incident in which property damage incurred after a door opened while driving at low speed and struck another vehicle. Ford also submitted 1,079 warranty claims related to door latch failures. Additionally Ford informed ODI in its IR response that MY 2013 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles utilize the same door latch as the MY 2011-13 Fiesta. In it's response, Ford stated that it does not believe that a latched door experiencing this condition will inadvertently unlatch and that there are many overt warning associated with a door that does not latch. ODI noted that the rate of occurrence for this failure is comparable to other door latch failure investigations and questions the effectiveness of warning signals given the number of complainants alleging that the door(s) opened while the vehicle was in motion. Therefore, ODI is upgrading this investigation to an Engineering Analysis (EA15-002) in order to further investigate the scope, frequency and consequence of this failure.ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at www-odi.nhtsa.gov/complaints under the identification (ODI) numbers listed in the attached document.
