The contact owns a 2021 Ford F-350. The contact stated that while the vehicle was hauling a trailer with a tractor, the tailgate unintendedly opened, causing damage to the tailgate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that since there was no water leaking under the front passenger's side floor mat, the contact needed to pay out-of-pocket for tailgate replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.
Tailgate has randomly opened twice. Tailgate function on the remote was definitely not being pressed.

Electronic tailgate on the 2021 Ford F-350 is opening on its own while driving. Doesn't matter the speed...its happened at 10 mph and at 60 mph. This is a critical issue since it is damaging RVs. My latest occurrence is noted in the Additional Details section, but it has now happened three (3) times since I purchased brand new with 6 miles on it...now has about 10,900 miles. There was a recall on model years 2019 and prior for this very symptom caused by moisture getting into the wiring harness.

Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A rearview camera image that does not display properly can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the image processing module software, free of charge.This will be a phased campaign, with the remedy becoming available in different phases based on model years. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on October 30, 2025. Additional letters will be mailed once the remedy is available on each phase. Of these complaints, 12 describe an engine compartment fire. The proximity of the secondary fuel filter to high heat sources creates a potential for autoignition thermal events and fires. ODI has contacted the vehicle manufacturer, Ford, and the filter manufacturer, Allevard Sogefi USA (Sogefi), and learned that the low-pressure fuel system is capable of a maximum operating pressure of 8.5 Bar, while the secondary fuel filter is only tested to seven (7) Bar during the manufacturing process. Additionally, changes starting in 2022 by both Ford and Sogefi align with a lack of similar complaints on MY 2022 and newer vehicles. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to evaluate the severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related problems.
