TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (OVER 55 MPH) THE STEERING WILL GO INTO A VIOLENT SHIMMY ALSO KNOWN AS A 'DEATH WOBBLE' AFTER CROSSING CERTAIN SEAMS IN THE ROADWAY. I HAVE TO BRAKE AND REDUCE SPEED RAPIDLY TO ABOUT 45 OR 50 MPH TO REGAIN CONTROL. THIS CREATES A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION DUE TO MOTORISTS BEHIND MY VEHICLE HAVING TO BRAKE ALSO. REMEMBER, THIS IS OCCURRING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS IS NOT A ONE TIME OCCURRENCE AS IT STARTED AT ABOUT 20000 MILES. AT THAT TIME A DEALER REPLACED THE STEERING DAMPER AND AT ABOUT 29000 THAT PART ALSO FAILED. I AM WAITING FOR MY LOCAL DEALER TO REPLACE THAT DAMPER WITH A 'REDESIGNED' ONE. I FEEL THIS IS JUST A BANDAID ON A MUCH MORE SERIOUS ISSUE.

MY 2017 FORD F-250 HAS WHAT IS BEING CALLED AT THE DEALERSHIP AND ONLINE AS HAVING THE DEATH WOBBLE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS WOBBLE BOTH WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS 55-75 MPH AND ON SECONDARY ROADS AS WELL AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 35-45 MPH. WHEN THIS WOBBLE OCCURS IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AS THE STEERING WHEEL AND TRUCK IS SHAKING SO VIOLENTLY. THIS HAS CAUSED ME TO LEAVE THE TRAVEL LANE TWICE AND END UP ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND IT WILL POSSIBLY KILL EITHER MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE. I TOOK IT TO MY DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THAT FORD IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM HOWEVER THERE ARE NO PARTS AVAILABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND NO IDEA OF WHEN THERE WILL BE PARTS AVAILABLE. FURTHERMORE WHEN I ASKED IF THE TRUCK WAS SAFE TO DRIVE THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME IT SHOULD BE. SAFETY IS A YES OR NO QUESTION THERE IS NO GRAY AREA. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THERE IS A FATAL ACCIDENT INVOLVING THIS PROBLEM IF IT IS NOT CORRECTED.

I AM FILING THIS REPORT FOR THE FAMOUS FORD SUPER DUTY F250 "DEATH WOBBLE"IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION. I HAVE HAD MY TRUCK BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP NUMEROUS TIMES FOR REPAIR, AND I AM NOW ON MY FOURTH STEERING STABILIZER INSTALLED ON MY 2017 F250 WITH ONLY 27K MILES ON IT. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF THE DEATH WOBBLE HAPPENED WITHIN 10K MILES, AND SUBSEQUENTLY ABOUT EVERY 3-5K MILES THEREAFTER. THIS ISSUE HAPPENS WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, AND WHEN A BUMP OR IRREGULARITY IN THE ROAD COMES UP. THE UNCONTROLLABLE SHAKING OF THE ENTIRE TRUCK RENDERS IT OUT OF CONTROL, AND CAN ONLY BE REMEDIED BY COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. IT HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME, AND THREW MY WIFE AND I INTO THE MEDIAN OF THE INTERSTATE WHILE GOING ABOUT 75MPH. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE GOING STRAIGHT, AROUND A CURVE, ETC. I TRIED TO GET FORD TO DO A BUYBACK ON THIS VEHICLE, TO NO AVAIL. THEY HIDE BEHIND THE IL LEMON LAW VERBIAGE INSTEAD OF OWNING THE ISSUE. THIS VEHICLE IS MOST CERTAINLY A DEATH TRAP, AND I WILL NOT LET ANY OF MY FAMILY DRIVE THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE JUST BECAUSE OF THE DEATH WOBBLE. I AM AT A LOSS ON WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS. I SPENT MY HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS TRUCK, ONLY TO HAVE IT BE A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD TO THOSE RIDING IN IT, AND TO ANYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD AROUND IT WHEN THE DEATH WOBBLE HAPPENS. THE ONLY THING LEFT IS LEGAL ACTION I GUESS, OR PARK IT IN THE FRONT YARD AND HAVE IT BE AN $80,000 FLOWER POT. PLEASE HELP!!

MY TRUCK HAS HAD THE FRONT END DEATH WOBBLE SINCE THE MIDDLE OF 2019. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE FORD DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THEY REPLACED THE STEERING STABILIZER AND TOLD ME THEY ADDED SOME SHIMS TO CORRECT AN CASTER PROBLEM.. THEY RETURNED THE TRUCK TO ME.SHORTLY AFTER THAT IT BEGAN TO WOBBLE AGAIN. I CONTACTED THE SAME DEALER TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AGAIN. I SCHEDULED IT, BUT THEY IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME THAT THE NEXT FIX WOULD REQUIRE PARTS THAT WERE NOT AVAILABLE. SO I AM WAITING ON PARTS THAT ARE SUPPOSEDLY 60-90 DAYS OUT. THERE ARE MANY DOCUMENTED COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME ISSUE AND FORD WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE UNSAFE CONDITION. FORD DEALERS ARE TELLING CUSTOMERS THAT THESE TRUCKS ARE NOT DESIGNED TO BE DRIVEN FASTER THAN 70 MPH OR TO SPEND OUT OF POCKET MONEY TO BUY AFTERMARKET PARTS THAT ARE KNOWN FIXES FOR THE PROBLEM. BOTTOM LINE IS MY 60K$ TRUCK IS STILL IN WARRANTY AND A DEATH TRAP TO DRIVE AND FORD IS NOT AGGRESSIVELY FIXING THE PROBLEM. THE DEATH WOBBLE HAPPENS AT ANYWHERE FROM 50+MPH WHEN YOU ENCOUNTER AN UNEVEN PORTION OF ROAD LIKE A EXPANSION JOINT AT A BRIDGE. THE WOBBLE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL YOU ARE BELOW 30 MPH. WHEN THE WOBBLE OCCURS IT IS NOT UNCOMMON THAT YOU LOOSE CONTROL CAUSING YOU TO BE IN THE ONCOMING LANE OF TRAFFIC.

ON TWO OCCASIONS THIS WINTER I HAVE HAD DOOR LATCHES ON THIS 2017 FORD F-250 CREW CAB SUPER DUTY FREEZE PREVENTING THE DOOR FROM LATCHING CLOSED AFTER IT WAS OPENED. THE MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE WAS APPROXIMATELY 19,700 MILES. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE HAPPENED IN DECEMBER 2019. THE MORNING TEMPERATURE WAS IN THE MID 20'S (DEGREE FAHRENHEIT) AND THE TRUCK WAS PARKED OUTSIDE OVERNIGHT. AFTER OPENING BOTH FRONT DOORS OF THE TRUCK TO LOAD PERSONAL ITEMS AND MYSELF, I WAS UNABLE TO SECURE EITHER FRONT DOOR DUE TO THE FROZEN LATCHES. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO SHUT AND SLAM THE DOORS AND CONDUCTED A CURSORY VISUAL INSPECTION OF BOTH LATCHES. THE 'DEFECT' WAS CLEARLY INTERNAL AND THERE WAS NOTHING I WOULD BE ABLE TO DO AT THAT TIME. AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF MANIPULATING BOTH DOORS, EVENTUALLY, ONE DOOR LATCHED CLOSED. REPEATED ATTEMPTS WITH THE OTHER DOOR WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. I THEN DROVE APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES TO MY DESTINATION, ON PUBLIC ROADS, HOLDING THE UNLATCHED DOOR CLOSED WITH MY HAND. I FULLY ACCEPT THE DANGER I PLACED MYSELF IN THAT DAY AND BELIEVE MANY OTHERS WILL MAKE THE SAME CHOICE WHEN FACED WITH A SIMILAR SITUATION. MOREOVER, I BELIEVE OTHERS WILL TRAVEL MUCH LONGER DISTANCES WITH FROZEN, UNLATCHED DOORS. THIS FROZEN LATCH PROBLEM WILL ONLY BEFALL MORE SIMILAR VEHICLES AS THEY AGE. I WAS AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL OF THIS PROBLEM FROM ONLINE FORUMS. I RECEIVED FORD'S LETTER ALERTING OWNERS OF A 'POTENTIAL FIX' FOR ONLY VEHICLES WHICH HAVE EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM. I HAVE ALSO SEEN NUMEROUS ONLINE POSTINGS THAT FORD'S FIX FOR THE LATCHES IS SOMETIMES UNSUCCESSFUL. I HAVE NOT HAD THIS PROCEDURE PERFORMED AS I DO NOT BELIEVE IT 'FIXES' THE ISSUE OF FROZEN LATCHES AND A FULL REDESIGN OF THE LATCH IS REQUIRED. PEOPLE DRIVING THESE VEHICLES WITH UNLATCHED DOORS IS CLEARLY UNSAFE. THE DANGER IS EVEN GREATER IF PEOPLE DO NOT REALIZE THE DOOR IS UNLATCHED.

PE24014 · Sogefi Secondary Diesel Fuel Filter Leak

Opened May 9, 2024 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Diesel; Fuel System, Other:fuel Filter

The Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) has received 27 complaints alleging diesel fuel leaks due to a fracture in the secondary fuel filter housing in model year (MY) 2015-2021 Ford Motor Company (Ford) F-250, 350, 450, and 550 Super Duty vehicles equipped with 6.7L diesel engines. Of these complaints, 12 describe an engine compartment fire. The proximity of the secondary fuel filter to high heat sources creates a potential for autoignition thermal events and fires. ODI has contacted the vehicle manufacturer, Ford, and the filter manufacturer, Allevard Sogefi USA (Sogefi), and learned that the low-pressure fuel system is capable of a maximum operating pressure of 8.5 Bar, while the secondary fuel filter is only tested to seven (7) Bar during the manufacturing process. Additionally, changes starting in 2022 by both Ford and Sogefi align with a lack of similar complaints on MY 2022 and newer vehicles. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to evaluate the severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related problems. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

In January 2021, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ21-001) to assess allegations of post-recall remedy uncommanded tailgate openings in model year (MY) 2017-2019 F-250/350/450 Ford trucks. Besides the recall remedy launched in January 2020, Ford also implemented a production update in November 2019.  At the time of the RQ opening, ODI had received eleven (11) Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs). ODI sent an Information Request (IR) to Ford in February 2021. In numerous meetings after receiving their IR response, Ford highlighted the drop in claims since the recall and production update and communicated how they were unable to verify the owners’ complaints or replicate the concern. Despite this, Ford began developing ways to prevent uncommanded tailgate openings from various human, mechanical or electrical causes. Based on testing, Ford issued a Customer Satisfaction program, 21M05-S1/S2/S3, to further address the potential of unintended tailgate openings. This work was applied to vehicles being produced as of December 20, 2021.  The program began for already delivered vehicles on July 22, 2022. The covered models include 2017-2022 F-250, 350, 450, 550, 650 and 750 Super Duty and 2020-2022 F-600 Super Duty trucks. ODI has received 39 VOQs between February 24, 2020, and December 15, 2023, alleging uncommanded tailgate openings.  In a detailed analysis, none of the vehicles in the VOQs were found to have received the Customer Satisfaction update. Since ODI has not received any complaints of post-Customer Satisfaction program tailgate openings, this office is closing this Recall Query. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. Opened Oct 12, 2018 · Closed Dec 12, 2019

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Electrical System:wiring; Structure:body:tailgate:hinge And Attachments

By letter dated December 4, 2019, Ford Motor Company (Ford) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) of a safety defect that may exist in model years (MY) 2017 through 2019 Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450 vehicles equipped with an electric tailgate. Following the receipt of five consumer complaints alleging unintended tailgate opening without vehicle operator knowledge, while the vehicles were in motion, NHTSA opened this investigation to assess the manufacturer's data including warranty claims, field reports, design changes, etc.In vehicles equipped with an electric tailgate, water can enter the electrical wiring system and may cause a short circuit resulting in the unintended activation and release of the tailgate latch. This could allow unintended opening of the tailgate while the vehicle is in motion.Analysis of the data provided by Ford found that the frequency of a tailgate opening unintended was high in vehicles equipped with electric tailgates. Unintended tailgate opening without vehicle operator knowledge may result in loss of unrestrained cargo, increasing the risk of a crash. In response to this investigation, Ford decided to conduct recall 19V-864.Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to modify the tailgate/frame wiring harnesses by adding jumper pigtails to isolate the tailgate release control circuits, and will install a new tailgate handle release switch. With recall action 19V-864 taken by Ford Motor Company this investigation is closed. Further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist on other model or MY vehicles outside of the recall scope.
