WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE DRIVER DOOR LATCH FAILING ON THE 2011 FORD EDGE. DRIVER DOOR WILL CLOSE AND APPEARS TO BE SECURE. HOWEVER, THE DRIVER DOOR AJAR LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE, THE CAR WILL NOT AUTO LOCK WHEN YOU REACH THE DESIGNATED SPEED AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS REMAIN ON FOR APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES. ALL OF THIS RESULTS IN A DRAIN ON THE BATTERY. IT TAKES SLAMMING THE DRIVER DOOR TO THE POINT YOU ARE AFRAID THAT ANOTHER ISSUE WILL ARISE BEFORE YOU CAN GET THE CAR TO RECOGNIZE THE DRIVER DOOR IS CLOSED. I TOOK MY EDGE TO MY FORD DEALER TO HAVE THE DRIVER DOOR LATCH REPLACED. AS I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AT THE TIME THIS PROBLEM STARTED, I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THE REPAIR. I HAVE REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT FROM FORD AS THIS APPEARS TO BE ANOTHER WELL KNOWN, WIDESPREAD ISSUE THAT FORD CHOOSES TO IGNORE INSTEAD OF ISSUING A RECALL. *TR

DRIVING ON I-65 IN AN AREA WITH 4-5 LANES OF TRAFFIC WITH A SPEED ZONE OF 65 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE LOST POWER - WRENCH LIGHT WARNING LIGHT CAME ON - HAD TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE ACROSS 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC DURING RUSH HOUR TO REACH THE EMERGENCY LANE. IT WAS SHEER LUCK THAT I MADE IT TO THE EMERGENCY LANE WITHOUT BEING HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE AS I COULD NOT SPEED UP THE CAR AND THE SPEED WAS NEARING ZERO MPH. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED INTO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AND EVENTUALLY REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. IT TOOK THE DEALERSHIP APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK TO REPAIR THE POWER TRAIN ISSUE. PER MY RESEARCH ON VARIOUS FORD EDGE SITES, THIS IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE AND FORD HAS FAILED TO RECALL THIS ISSUE. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT HARMED. HOWEVER, NOT EVERYONE WILL BE THIS FORTUNATE. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THIS ISSUE ASAP. *TR

THE INFO SAID THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE POWERTRAIN AND THE CAR WOULD BE IN LIMP MODE. MY HUSBAND TURNED OFF IGNITION AND RESTARTED. IT WAS OKAY FOR ANOTHER COUPLE OF MILES THEN HAPPENED AGAIN. AGAIN HE TURNED IT OFF AND RESTARTED. THE THIRD TIME IT HAPPENED, WE PULLED OVER AND CALLED FORD. LUCKILY THERE WAS A DEALERSHIP CLOSE BY. HOWEVER, WHEN WE TALKED TO THEM, THEY SAID THEY'D HAVE TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC. WE DIDN'T LEAVE THE CAR. WE DIDN'T HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM UNTIL JULY 25, 2013. IT HAPPENED AGAIN TWICE WHILE I WAS DRIVING. THE CAR IS NOW AT THE DEALERS BEING CHECKED OUT FOR THE PROBLEM. FIRST IMPRESSION, IT'S THE THROTTLE. *TR

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR THE CAR 'STALLED' MEANING I HAD NO ABILITY TO ACCELERATE THE CAR, ALL OTHER ITEMS WORKED OK, AN AMBER WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON, I PULLED OVER, RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT WORKED FINE. IT HAPPENED AGAIN 3 DAYS LATER APPROX THE SAME SPEED. SEEMING THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE AMONG OTHER FORD EDGE CARS. *TR

TO FIND COMFORT THE SEAT BELT HAS TO CONSTANTLY BE UNLATCHED AND RE LATCHED WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION / DRIVEN. UNSAFE! WHEN RESEARCHING THE DOOR AJAR ISSUE IT HAS BECOME VERY CLEAR THAT FORD HAS A MAJOR DEFECT WITH THIS PART THAT HAS BEEN INSTALLED. THIS SHOULD NOT COST CONSUMERS OVER $500 OUT OF POCKET TO REPAIR OR PUT THEIR LIVE IN DANGER DUE TO THEIR NEGLECT TO REPAIR THEIR PRODUCT THAT WAS DEFECTED WHEN MANUFACTURED. *TR

ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS MY FORD EDGE LOST POWER TO ACCELERATION AND STALLED OUT. THE FIRST TIME I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. THE CAR WENT LIMP AND A WRENCH WARNING APPEARED. WHEN I CHECKED THE INFORMATION SYSTEM IT HAD THE 'NO KEY DETECTED' WARNING. I RESTARTED AND CAR SEEMED FINE. TWO DAYS LATER I WAS PULLING ONTO A BUSY STREET AND THE SAME THING OCCURRED ONLY THIS TIME NO WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED AND THERE WERE NO WARNINGS IN THE INFORMATION SETTING. ON THE SAME DAY, WHILE TRAVELING 60 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE THE CAR DID THE SAME THING. THIS TIME IT WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND THERE WAS NOT A SHOULDER AVAILABLE TO PULL OVER. I HAD TO TURN ON HAZARD LIGHTS AND HOPE THE MOMENTUM OF THE CAR WOULD ALLOW ME TO GET TO A SAFE STOPPING PLACE. UNFORTUNATELY IT DID NOT AND I HAD TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE, PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND RESTART. I WAS LUCKY I WASN'T REARENDED. IT DID RESTART BUT THIS TIME THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON AND REMAINED ON. I CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND HAD THE CAR TAKEN TO A DEALERSHIP. THEY HAVE DETERMINED IT TO BE THE THROTTLE BODY. PART IS ON BACK ORDER AND NO IDEA WHEN CAR WILL BE FIXED. AFTER THE THIRD INCIDENT I BEGAN RESEARCHING AND HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM. FORD NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS AS SOMEONE IS GOING TO BE SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED. THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND HAVE EVEN REPLACED THE MANUFACTURER WHO PROVIDED THE THROTTLE BODY PART DUE TO NUMEROUS PROBLEMS. FORD NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL IMMEDIATELY IF NOT, AT THE VERY LEAST OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES NEED TO BE INFORMED OF THE ISSUE AND IF THEY EXPERIENCE SIMILAR PROBLEMS SHOULD BE TOLD TO IMMEDIATELY CONTACT THEIR DEALER. I HAVE REPORTED THE ISSUE TO FORD AND THEY HAVE OPENED A CASE. I RECOMMEND THAT ALL WHO HAVE HAD PROBLEMS DO THE SAME. THE MORE COMPLAINTS, THE HARDER IT IS TO IGNORE! *TR

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the interior dome lights staying on continuously. Ford data received from the Information Request letter corresponding to this investigation indicates the failures were caused by contamination of the electrical contacts on the switch located within each door latch that tells the vehicle if the door is open or closed. All four doors contain the same latch design and switch.According to Ford, the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the position of the switch and continuously samples it to detect a state of change. After a closed door state is detected, a continuous wetting current designed to keep the electrical contacts clean is sent from the BCM to the switches as long as the BCM is active.Beginning with the 2011 model year Edge vehicles, a change in BCM strategy resulted in a reduction of the wetting current sent out to clean the switch contacts by more than 75%.Over time, this low level of current is not sufficient to keep the switch contacts clean and contamination build up causes them to fail as described above.During the course of this investigation, ODI has identified a total of 1,983 complaints related to the door ajar light.Of these complaints, 14 indicated that a door opened while driving.Twelve of the 14 door opening events were situations where an occupant of the vehicle (often a child) opened a passenger door because the doors were not locked. The remaining two complaints involved a door opening on its own because the driver was unaware that the door was unlatched. There were no accidents but one complainant reported that a shoulder injury was caused by the driver having to repeatedly slam the door in an effort to get the door ajar light to turn off. After reviewing all available data, an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety has not been identified. The door latches themselves continue to function properly, remaining securely latched until acted upon by a driver or passenger.Child safety locks on the rear doors continue to function properly and can be used to prevent the rear doors from opening via the inside door handles.Vehicle crashworthiness is not affected by the lock condition of the doors and all active safety systems continue to function normally even if the vehicle BCM believes one or more doors is open.In addition, no accidents or accident related injuries have been reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.ODI numbers for the reports cited above are shown in the attached document.
