WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD TO PUSH AND THE VEHICLE WAS SLOW TO STOP. THE CAR STARTED TO STALL AND A WARNING "LOW ENGINE OIL PRESSURE" WAS DISPLAYED, THEN THE CAR RECOVERED WHEN IN DRIVE. APPROXIMATELY A WEEK LATER, THE BRAKES WERE AGAIN HARD TO PUSH WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. IN THE FOLLOWING WEEK, THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. LAST WEEK, THE BRAKES BECAME HARD TO PUSH AND THE VEHICLE WAS SLOW TO STOP WHILE IN DRIVE. I HAVE PARKED THE CAR UNTIL SERVICE CAN BE PERFORMED. FLUIDS AND BRAKE PADS HAVE BEEN CHECKED AND ARE NOT THE ISSUE. IN SEARCHING THE WEB AND VARIOUS FORD FORUMS, AND SPEAKING WITH A MECHANIC, IT APPEARS TO BE A BRAKE BOOSTER ISSUE. THE CAR IS A 2011 MODEL WITH <24,000 MILES AND IS THREE MONTHS OUT OF MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. *TR

THE DOOR AJAR SENSOR CEASES TO FUNCTION AND INDICATE WHETHER THE DOOR IS OPEN OR CLOSED, LEAVING IT IN THE "AJAR" STATE. BY HAVING IT IN THIS STATE, THE VEHICLES LOCKS DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGE WHILE DRIVING AND ALSO THE BATTERY DRAINS WHILE THE CAR IS NOT IN USE. *TR

ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 21, 2014, I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FORD REGARDING CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM 13N02. AFTER READING THE LETTER, I REALIZED THAT I WAS EXPERIENCING 2 OF THE 3 SYMPTOMS NOTED IN THE LETTER(SPONGY FEEL WHEN APPLYING BRAKES AND INCREASED AMOUNT OF PEDAL EFFORT REQUIRED TO STOP CAR). I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER AND THEY SAID TO BRING IT. ON MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 2014, I TOOK THE CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TESTED THE BRAKES AND THEY CLAIM THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THEREFORE REFUSED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I CALLED FORD HEADQUARTERS AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO THEM ALSO. BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A RECALL, BUT A SERVICE ADVISORY, THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE SYMPTOMS AT THAT TIME. I TOLD BOTH THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND FORD HEADQUARTERS THAT I'M STILL HAVING THE PROBLEM WHETHER OR NOT THEY COULD DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. I ALSO ASKED BOTH OF THEM IF THEY WERE WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT BEFORE THEY DID ANYTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. WELL, AS A RESULT OF FORD'S UNWILLINGNESS TO FIX MY BRAKE PROBLEM, I GOT INTO A CAR ACCIDENT ON MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2014. I APPLIED THE BRAKES ON MY CAR AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP; AND I REAR-ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. *TR

THE DRIVER'S DOOR AJAR SENSOR STAYS ON AND YOU WILL HAVE TO OPEN AND SHUT THE DOOR SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT GOES OUT AND SOMETIMES THAT DOESN'T WORK. MY FIRST INCIDENT WAS WHEN MY CAR WAS LESS THAN A YEAR OLD (EARLY 2012) AND I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE REPLACED. THEN IN MARCH OF 2014, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. SO WHEN I WENT IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM AND THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD CLEAN IT AND GO FROM THERE. JUST 2 SHORT WEEKS LATER IT STARTED HAPPENING ONCE AGAIN SO THIS TIME I HAVE RETURNED THE CAR AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME A $100 DEDUCTIBLE TO DO THE WORK. I ASKED WHY BECAUSE I HAVE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND HE EXPLAINED THAT CERTAIN ITEMS ARE COVERED BUT WITH A DEDUCTIBLE FEE. THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A RECALL OF THE CAR BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO BE SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO BE A RECURRING ISSUE WITH NO FAULT OF THE CONSUMER. *TR

IF YOU CANNOT MAKE THE MESSAGE GO AWAY BY REOPENING AND SHUTTING THE DOOR, THEN THE DOORS WILL NOT LOCK ONCE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND THE DOME LIGHTS WILL REMAIN ILLUMINATED. ALSO, THE BIGGEST DANGER IS THAT THE LATCH CAN MALFUNCTION WHILE DRIVING CAUSING THE DOORS LOCKS TO UNLOCK WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH RATES OF SPEED. THIS IS CONCERNING GIVEN THAT MY SON RIDES IN THE BACK SEAT. *TR

WHICH KEEPS MY INTERIOR LIGHTS ON AT NIGHTTIME. ALSO NOT SURE MY CAR LOCKS COMPLETELY AS THE CAR HONKS TWICE QUICKLY WHEN I TRY TO LOCK USING THE WIRELESS LOCKING DEVICE. VERY FRUSTRATING, AND FOR THE MONEY THEY CHARGE FOR FORD CARS, DON'T THINK THIS SHOULD BE A PROBLEM. HAVE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT CAN COST UP TO $300 AT DEALERSHIPS TO FIX, AND CHEAPEST I HAVE FOUND IS $85.00 TO BUY PART FROM FORD AND TRY TO FIX IT MYSELF. *JS

PE16012 · Door Ajar Warning Light Always On

Opened Sep 28, 2016 · Closed Mar 20, 2017

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Interior Lighting; Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the interior dome lights staying on continuously. Ford data received from the Information Request letter corresponding to this investigation indicates the failures were caused by contamination of the electrical contacts on the switch located within each door latch that tells the vehicle if the door is open or closed. All four doors contain the same latch design and switch.According to Ford, the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the position of the switch and continuously samples it to detect a state of change. After a closed door state is detected, a continuous wetting current designed to keep the electrical contacts clean is sent from the BCM to the switches as long as the BCM is active.Beginning with the 2011 model year Edge vehicles, a change in BCM strategy resulted in a reduction of the wetting current sent out to clean the switch contacts by more than 75%.Over time, this low level of current is not sufficient to keep the switch contacts clean and contamination build up causes them to fail as described above.During the course of this investigation, ODI has identified a total of 1,983 complaints related to the door ajar light.Of these complaints, 14 indicated that a door opened while driving.Twelve of the 14 door opening events were situations where an occupant of the vehicle (often a child) opened a passenger door because the doors were not locked. The remaining two complaints involved a door opening on its own because the driver was unaware that the door was unlatched. There were no accidents but one complainant reported that a shoulder injury was caused by the driver having to repeatedly slam the door in an effort to get the door ajar light to turn off. After reviewing all available data, an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety has not been identified. The door latches themselves continue to function properly, remaining securely latched until acted upon by a driver or passenger.Child safety locks on the rear doors continue to function properly and can be used to prevent the rear doors from opening via the inside door handles.Vehicle crashworthiness is not affected by the lock condition of the doors and all active safety systems continue to function normally even if the vehicle BCM believes one or more doors is open.In addition, no accidents or accident related injuries have been reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.ODI numbers for the reports cited above are shown in the attached document.
