BASE MODEL: IN FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST 2014, IT EXPERIENCED SUDDEN LOSS OF SPEED AND SEVERE VIBRATION WHILE DRIVING ON MAJOR THOUROUGHFARE STREET. IT WAS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN AND COULD NOT BE MOVED OUT OF THE WAY. THE "WRENCH" SIGN CAME UP. AFTER TURNING IT OFF AND WAITING FOR ABOUT A 2-3 MINS, IT DID START LIKE NORMAL. WE BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE SAME DAY. FIRST WE WERE TOLD THAT IT JUST NEEDS COMPUTER RESET AND WOULD COST $75, THEN THEY ULTIMATELY DID IT FOR FREE, WHILE PERFORMING 30K MILES SERVICES SAME DAY. THREE MONTH LATER I STARTED EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE AGAIN. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD TO BRING IT IN. I DID NOT HAVE TIME FOR ABOUT A WEEK DUE TO TIGHT WORK SCHEDULE, BUT DURING THAT WEEK IT KEPT OCCURRING AGAIN, HAPPENED 3-4 TIMES. FINALLY WHEN IT WENT FOR SERVICE AT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY TOLD ME THAT IT IS THROTTLE ISSUE AND QUOTED ME ABOUT $800 TO FIX IT. UPON FURTHER INQUIRING WITH TECHNICIAN, HE TOLD THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON ISSUE ON FORD VEHICLES. FORD ESCAPE AND FUSION HAVE BEEN RECALLED TO FIX IT UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE SIMILAR PROBLEM, BUT FORD EDGE HAS NOT BEEN STILL COVERED FOR THIS ISSUES. THERE IS A FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM WITH HOW FORD HAS BEEN HANDLING THE ISSUE FOR THE EDGE. WHAT I HAVE FOUND THAT FORD HAS NOT ALLOWING / GIVING OUT SERVICE CENTER TO USE THE CODE TO EXPLORE THE BLACK BOX RIGHT AWAY IF THIS ISSUE COMES UP WHICH LEADS TO DELAY IN FINDING OUT WHAT EXACTLY IS WRONG WITH IT. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. IF YOU ARE DRIVING ON MAJOR INTERSTATE OR MAKING A TURN, SUDDEN DECELERATION AND STALLING COULD BE LIFE THREATENING FOR THE ALL PASSENGERS IN THE CAR. NHTSA HAS DROPPED THE BALL BY NOT FORCING FORD TO RECALL FORD EDGE AND HAVE JUST ENFORCED CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM INSTEAD OF RECALL. I HOPE THE NHTSA DOES NOT WAIT TILL THE FATALITIES ARE REPORTED. ( CAR IS UNDER MY WIFE'S NAME). *TR

THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR ADJAR SENSOR IS MALFUNCTIONING EVEN WHEN THE DOOR IS FULLY CLOSED. WHEN THIS MALFUNCTION OCCURS, THE INTERIOR OVERHEAD LIGHT REMAINS LIT FOR 5-10 MINUTES AND IT CANNOT BE DISABLED. THIS IS ESPECIALLY PROBLEMATIC DURING NIGHT DRIVING, BECAUSE IT MAKES IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO SEE THE ROAD AND SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT WHILE THE LIGHT IS ON. THE FIRST TIME THE PROBLEM OCCURRED, FORD CLEANED THE CONTACTS AND IT FIXED THE ERROR FOR 6 MONTHS AND THE REPAIR WAS $148.50 WHEN IT APPEARED AGAIN, FORDS SOLUTION WAS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY AND THE COST OF THIS 2ND REPAIR WAS $340.00. NOT ONLY HAVE THESE BEEN EXPENSIVE REPAIRS, IT MUST BE COMPLETED BECAUSE IT CREATES A DANGEROUS DRIVING EXPERIENCE AND THERE IS NO WAY TO DEACTIVATE THE SENSOR. THIS IS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR

THE DOOR AJAR SWITCH DOES NOT WORK. WHAT THIS HAS DONE TO THE VEHICLE IS THE INTERIOR LIGHTS STAY ON IN THE CAR WELL AFTER IT HAS BEEN TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE ALSO WILL NOT TURN THE INTERIOR LIGHT OFF WHEN RUNNING UNLESS YOU ARE IN DRIVE AND MOVE FORWARD. THE DANGER IS IN REVERSING AT NIGHT. THE LIGHTS DO NOT GO OUT WHATSOEVER IN REVERSE AND MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE AT NIGHT WHEN IN REVERSE. WE HAVE ALMOST HIT A PERSON, A CAR AND A FEW POLES WITH THIS LIGHTING STAYING ON. NOT ONLY DOES IT POSE A THREAT FOR A CRASH OR HITTING OTHER VEHICLES IT ALSO KILLS THE BATTERY IN THE VEHICLE. THIS SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE IN A VEHICLE THIS NEW. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS THE LIGHTING THAT STAYS ON WILL GET SOMEONE HURT BECAUSE THE DRIVER CANNOT SEE WHERE THEY ARE REVERSING TO INTHE DARK. *TR

READ DRIVER SIDE DOOR LATCH SENSOR SAYS THAT THE DOOR IS AJAR AND IT IS CLEARLY NOT. IT USED TO WORK BY OPENING AND CLOSING A FEW TIMES, BUT NOW HAS COMPLETELY FAILED. IT HAS BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE LOCKS WILL NOT ENGAGE WHILE DRIVING AS THE INTERIOR LIGHTS DON'T GO OFF EITHER. *TR

PE16012 · Door Ajar Warning Light Always On

Opened Sep 28, 2016 · Closed Mar 20, 2017

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Interior Lighting; Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the interior dome lights staying on continuously. Ford data received from the Information Request letter corresponding to this investigation indicates the failures were caused by contamination of the electrical contacts on the switch located within each door latch that tells the vehicle if the door is open or closed. All four doors contain the same latch design and switch.According to Ford, the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the position of the switch and continuously samples it to detect a state of change. After a closed door state is detected, a continuous wetting current designed to keep the electrical contacts clean is sent from the BCM to the switches as long as the BCM is active.Beginning with the 2011 model year Edge vehicles, a change in BCM strategy resulted in a reduction of the wetting current sent out to clean the switch contacts by more than 75%.Over time, this low level of current is not sufficient to keep the switch contacts clean and contamination build up causes them to fail as described above.During the course of this investigation, ODI has identified a total of 1,983 complaints related to the door ajar light.Of these complaints, 14 indicated that a door opened while driving.Twelve of the 14 door opening events were situations where an occupant of the vehicle (often a child) opened a passenger door because the doors were not locked. The remaining two complaints involved a door opening on its own because the driver was unaware that the door was unlatched. There were no accidents but one complainant reported that a shoulder injury was caused by the driver having to repeatedly slam the door in an effort to get the door ajar light to turn off. After reviewing all available data, an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety has not been identified. The door latches themselves continue to function properly, remaining securely latched until acted upon by a driver or passenger.Child safety locks on the rear doors continue to function properly and can be used to prevent the rear doors from opening via the inside door handles.Vehicle crashworthiness is not affected by the lock condition of the doors and all active safety systems continue to function normally even if the vehicle BCM believes one or more doors is open.In addition, no accidents or accident related injuries have been reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.ODI numbers for the reports cited above are shown in the attached document.
