2011 EDGE, 3.5 YEARS OLD, WITH 41,000 MILES. CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER TO MOVE FORWARD, BUT CAR WAS STILL RUNNING, WRENCH APPEARED ON SCREEN, WAS ABLE TO COAST AND PULL OVER. TURNED ENGINE OFF, RESTARTED VEHICLE SUCCESSFULLY. PROBLEM REPEATED ITSELF THE NEXT DAY, TWICE, WAS ABLE TO (FORTUNATELY) COAST TO A SAFE AREA AND TURN THE CAR OFF. CAR WAS RESTARTED, ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED AFTER THE THIRD INCIDENT. CAR WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP. CODE P2111. THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED ($636), UPDATED SOFTWARE - POWERTRAIN?? ($95), AND PERFORMED A "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED" FUEL CLEANING ($108). TOTAL COST, WITH MISCELLANEOUS CHARGES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL WASTE AND TAX, WAS $884. I HAVE OWNED NUMEROUS VEHICLES, MOST FROM FORD, MOST OLDER THAN 3.5 YEARS OLD AND HAVING MORE THAN 41,000 MILES, NEVER HAD A PROBLEM LIKE THIS BEFORE - VERY DISAPPOINTING! HIGH LEVEL OF CONCERN DURING INCIDENTS THAT THE CAR WOULD CREATE A TRAFFIC PROBLEM. FORTUNATELY IT DID NOT AND WAS ABLE TO AVOID HIGH TRAFFIC AND HIGH SPEEDS, AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP. *TR

AS OTHERS HAVE MENTIONED SCANNER SHOWS NO CODES. FORTUNATELY FOR US THE ISSUES HAVE HAPPENED ON LOW VOLUME ROADWAYS, NOT HIGH SPEED, HIGH TRAFFIC LIKE SOME UNLUCKY FOLKS. LOCAL DEALER CALLED FORD AND IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE POWER TRAIN, WE HAVE 35K MILES BUT 45 MONTHS. HOPEFULLY FORD WILL STAND UP AND DO A RECALL WITHOUT WAITING FOR THE DEATHS TO MULTIPLY LIKE GM! *TR

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY IN THE LEFT LANE AT 70 MPH DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC MY FORD EDGE WENT LIMP AND NO LONGER HAD ACCELERATION. I HAD TO SAFELY MANEUVER MYSELF OFF THE FREEWAY WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS DECREASING IN SPEED, SHUT THE CAR OFF AND SIT FOR A MINUTE BEFORE RESTARTING THE CAR AND SAFELY GETTING MYSELF BACK ON THE FREEWAY AND ON MY WAY. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND MULTIPLE (HUNDREDS) COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER EDGE AND OTHER FORD MODEL OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. I TOOK MY EDGE TO THE FORD DEALER WHERE THEY CONFIRMED THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER CARE TO SEE IF THIS WOULD BE COVERED UNDER MY POWER TRAIN WARRANTY, IT WAS NOT. I PAID OUT OF POCKET TO HAVE THIS ISSUE FIXED. FORD HAS SINCE EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE THROTTLE BODY FOR ESCAPES AND FUSIONS DUE TO THOSE MODELS EXPERIENCING THE SAME SYMPTOMS, BUT HAVE YET TO INCLUDE THE EDGE. FORD HAS NOW SENT ESCAPE AND FUSION OWNERS ANOTHER LETTER REGARDING THE ISSUE ELUDING THAT MORE WORK IS NEEDED. AGAIN, THE EDGE HAS YET TO BE INCLUDED IN ANY OF THIS. I WOULD LIKE FORD TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS, ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY HAVE ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGED OTHER FORD MODELS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. *TR

AT TIME OF STALL (LOSS OF ENGINE POWER) THE ENGINE REMAINED RUNNING; CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON; "WRENCH" SHOWED ON DASH INSTRUMENTS; ALL ELECTRICAL POWER REMAINED ON AND OPERATING. NECESSARY TO PUT HAZARD LIGHTS ON, GLIDE TO STOP OFF ROAD, PLACE TRANSMISSION LEVER IN NEUTRAL THEN IN PARK AND TURN ENGINE OFF. ON RESTART, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. I CALLED ADVANTAGE FORD DEALERSHIP FROM ROAD; THEY SAID OK TO PROCEED TO DEALERSHIP. THESE INCIDENTS OCCURRED IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON US-1. NO WARNING FROM CAR RE: ENGINE RUMBLING OR OTHER BEFORE STALL. FELT IN DANGER BUT ABLE TO NAVIGATE SAFELY. INTERNET SEARCH PRIOR TO DEALER VISIT INDICATED "THROTTLE BODY" PROBLEM WITH FORD ESCAPE PRIMARILY. ONLY 1-3 COMPLAINTS RE: FORD EDGE. *TR

WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES PER HOUR, THE CAR SUDDENLY STALLED, ALTHOUGH IT WOULD MOVE AT A VERY SLOW SPEED AT A ROUGH IDLE, MAYBE 1 MILE PER HOUR, NO MATTER HOW HARD THE ACCELERATOR WAS DEPRESSED. SIMULTANEOUSLY, A YELLOW WRENCH WARNING LIGHT APPEARED. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND LET THE ENGINE RUN, IT REMAINED RUNNING ROUGH AT A VERY SLOW SPEED. I CONTINUED FOR ABOUT A MINUTE, THEN SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. AFTER RESTART, THE CAR RAN NORMALLY WITH NO WARNING INDICATORS. I TOOK THE CAR TO A FORD DEALER WHERE THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM, AND WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE I SHUT THE CAR OFF, ANY ERROR CODES WERE CLEARED. THEY COULD ALSO NOT PERFORM A REPAIR IF THEY DID NOT KNOW THE CAUSE, ALTHOUGH THEY SAID IT IS PROBABLY THE THROTTLE BODY. WITHOUT ERROR CODES, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM, I WAS FORTUNATE TO NOT BE ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 60 MILES PER HOUR. *TR

THE THROTTLE BODY OF THIS CAR WAS DEFECTIVE. I UNDERSTAND FORD HAS THIS PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR AND OTHER CARS WITH THE SAME MAKER OF THE PART. THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY LOSE ALL FUNCTION OF THE ACCELERATOR. NO POWER WHATSOEVER. I SEE THIS AS A SAFETY ISSUE AS IF THIS HAPPENED IN AN INTERSECTION, ON THE HIGHWAY IN A MIDDLE LANE, THE CAR AND PASSENGERS ARE HELPLESS TO MAKE THE CAR ACCELERATE UNTIL THE CAR IS STOPPED, PUT IN PARK, TURNED OFF THEN RESTARTED. THEN EVERYTHING RESETS AND THE CAR WILL GO AGAIN. I JUST SHIVER AT THIS HAPPENING IN 70 MPH RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IN THE MIDDLE LANE AND YOU CAN'T DRIFT OVER TO THE SIDE. AND YOU ARE ADRIFT, COMPLETELY HELPLESS. IT HAPPENED 6 TIMES TO MY CAR IN THE PAST 3 WEEKS, ONCE ON A 2 LANE HIGHWAY AND EACH OF THE OTHERS IN TOWN AND IN TRAFFIC. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOP.. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THROTTLE BODY AND, YES, FORD HAS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THESE AND OTHER MODELS.. ON TOP OF THAT IT'S A 500.00 REPAIR THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO BEGIN WITH. I SEE IT AS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

PE16012 · Door Ajar Warning Light Always On

Opened Sep 28, 2016 · Closed Mar 20, 2017

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Interior Lighting; Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the interior dome lights staying on continuously. Ford data received from the Information Request letter corresponding to this investigation indicates the failures were caused by contamination of the electrical contacts on the switch located within each door latch that tells the vehicle if the door is open or closed. All four doors contain the same latch design and switch.According to Ford, the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the position of the switch and continuously samples it to detect a state of change. After a closed door state is detected, a continuous wetting current designed to keep the electrical contacts clean is sent from the BCM to the switches as long as the BCM is active.Beginning with the 2011 model year Edge vehicles, a change in BCM strategy resulted in a reduction of the wetting current sent out to clean the switch contacts by more than 75%.Over time, this low level of current is not sufficient to keep the switch contacts clean and contamination build up causes them to fail as described above.During the course of this investigation, ODI has identified a total of 1,983 complaints related to the door ajar light.Of these complaints, 14 indicated that a door opened while driving.Twelve of the 14 door opening events were situations where an occupant of the vehicle (often a child) opened a passenger door because the doors were not locked. The remaining two complaints involved a door opening on its own because the driver was unaware that the door was unlatched. There were no accidents but one complainant reported that a shoulder injury was caused by the driver having to repeatedly slam the door in an effort to get the door ajar light to turn off. After reviewing all available data, an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety has not been identified. The door latches themselves continue to function properly, remaining securely latched until acted upon by a driver or passenger.Child safety locks on the rear doors continue to function properly and can be used to prevent the rear doors from opening via the inside door handles.Vehicle crashworthiness is not affected by the lock condition of the doors and all active safety systems continue to function normally even if the vehicle BCM believes one or more doors is open.In addition, no accidents or accident related injuries have been reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.ODI numbers for the reports cited above are shown in the attached document.
