THIS HAPPENED ON 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. AFTER TWO DAYS THEY WERE ABLE TO TELL ME IT WAS A FAULTY THROTTLE BODY AND NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. HOW CAN THERE BE RECALLS FOR OTHER FORD MODELS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM BUT NOT FOR THE EDGE? RIDICULOUS AND COMPLETELY UNSAFE!!!! *TR

ABOUT 35 MINUTES INTO MY TRIP, ON A VERY RURAL MISSOURI HIGHWAY, MY CAR HAD NO POWER ACCELERATING AND THE "WRENCH LIGHT" CAME ON. LUCKILY, A CHURCH PARKING LOT WAS NEAR, SO I COASTED THERE AND SHUT OFF THE CAR. I STARTED IT, IT WAS RUNNING OK AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF. I MADE THE REST OF MY TRIP. WHEN I GOT BACK HOME, I LEFT THE NEXT DAY ON AUGUST 6TH TO HEAD TO AURORA, MO TO HELP MY DAUGHTER. ABOUT 1 1/2 HOURS INTO MY TRIP, THE CAR DID EXACTLY THE SAME THING. NO POWER, WRENCH LIGHT ON. I WAS SO NERVOUS SINCE I WAS ON INTERSTATE 44 WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC. I GOT OFF THE INTERSTATE AND RESTARTED THE CAR AND MADE IT TO AURORA. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE FORD DEALER THERE. THEY CHECKED IT AND STATED NO CODES CAME UP SO THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. I CALLED HUTCHESON FORD IN ST. JAMES (WHERE I PURCHASED EDGE) AND THEY WANTED ME TO BRING IT IN. JULY 28TH, I TOOK IT TO ST. JAMES WITH THE SAME RESULTS. NO CODES, NO HELP. I CAME HOME AND HAD A LOCAL MECHANIC DRIVE IT. HE DID AND SAID THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG & TO CHECK THE INTERNET FOR COMMON PROBLEMS. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON THEIR 2011 EDGE AND STATED IT WAS THROTTLE BODY. I DRIVE A LOT BY MYSELF ON ROADS WITH NO SHOULDER SO I HAD TO HAVE IT TAKEN CARE OF. TODAY I JUST PICKED UP THE EDGE WITH A NEW THROTTLE BODY OF $710. *TR

THIS IS MY 2ND COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS SAME DEFECT AS IT HAS OCCURRED 2 ADDITIONAL TIMES (3 TOTAL INCIDENTS). THE 1ST INCIDENT OCCURRED ON 4/11. THE 2ND INCIDENT OCCURRED ON 6/2 WHEN MY WIFE WAS TURNING RIGHT FROM AN INTERSECTION. AT APPROXIMATELY 20MPH SHE LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AND HAD TO QUICKLY CHANGE LANES AND COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHILE AVOIDING TRAFFIC. SHE PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF. ONCE SHE TURNED THE CAR BACK ON, THE CAR OPERATED NORMALLY. THE 3RD INCIDENT OCCURRED ON 6/3. MY WIFE ACCELERATED FROM A RED LIGHT INTO AN INTERSECTION AND LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. SHE WAS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION WITH CARS SWERVING AROUND HER. SHE AGAIN STOPPED HER CAR FROM COASTING, PUT IT IN PARK, AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. SHE RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT OPERATED NORMALLY. I DEEMED HER CAR TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AND WOULD NOT ALLOW HER TO DRIVE UNTIL REPAIRED. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THE FORD ESCAPE, FUSION, MARINER, AND MILAN HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM THE EDGES ARE HAVING. THOSE OWNERS RECEIVED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY. REFERENCE CUSTOMER SERVICE PROGRAM (CSP) 13N03 AND NHTSA ACTION # PE13003. I TOOK HER CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ERROR CODES NOR REPEAT THE PROBLEM. HE SAID HE COULD NOT REPAIR ANYTHING WITHOUT THIS INFORMATION. I MENTIONED CSP 13N03 AND HE SAID HE WAS AWARE OF IT BUT IT DIDN'T APPLY TO THE EDGE. SINCE THE PROBLEMS WERE EXACTLY THE SAME, I ASKED IF REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. HE HESITATED BUT AFTER SOME PRODDING HE SAID IT WOULD MOST LIKELY FIX THE PROBLEM BUT HE COULDN'T OFFICIALLY SAY SO. I HAD THEM REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY ON 6/6 ($698.06) AND MY WIFE HAS HAD ZERO PROBLEMS AS OF 8/13, FURTHER PROVING IT'S THE SAME DEFECT. I HOPE FORD STEPS UP AS THEY DID WITH THE OTHER FORD MODELS AND CORRECTS THIS DANGEROUS SAFETY HAZARD. *TR

WHEN DRIVING ON A 2 LANE MOUNTAIN ROAD AT 60, ENGINE FULLY WARMED UP (RUNNING FOR 20+ MINUTES, AMBIENT TEMPERATURE APPROX 85 F) THE THROTTLE BECOME UNRESPONSIVE AND THE ENGINE RPM DROPPED TO APPROXIMATELY 600 RPM BASED ON THE DASH TACHOMETER. WHEN THIS HAPPENED A YELLOW WRENCH DIALOG WAS DISPLAYED ON THE DIGITAL DASH WITH NO TEXT OTHER THAN "OK". ALL CONTROLS OTHER THAN THE THROTTLE SEEMED TO FUNCTION CORRECTLY. WE WERE GOING DOWNHILL WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND WERE ABLE TO COAST UNTIL WE FOUND A SUITABLE PLACE TO PULL OVER. ONCE WE PULLED OVER WE NOTICED THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING ROUGH AND SPUTTERING. WE TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND THEN BACK ON AND THE ISSUE PERSISTED (ROUGH IDLING AND NO THROTTLE CONTROL). OPENED HOOD AND PULLED ENGINE COVER TO CHECK FOR ANY VISIBLE ISSUES, NONE FOUND. WHEN WE GOT BACK INTO THE CAR THE THROTTLE WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND THE IDLE WAS SMOOTH WITH NO SPUTTERING. WE FINISHED THE REST OF THE DRIVE WITHOUT INCIDENT AND WHEN WE GOT BACK TO THE HOUSE HOOKED UP THE OBDII READER AND NO FAULT CODES WERE STORED. WE TOOK THE EDGE IN TO THE NEAREST FORD DEALER (LAWLEY'S TEAM FORD IN SILVER CITY, NM) THE NEXT MORNING AND THEY FOUND NO FAULT CODES STORED IN ANY MODULE AND CHARGED US $122.25 FOR THE DIAGNOSTICS EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS STILL COVERED UNDER THE FACTORY POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE ISSUE BUT SAID IT MAY HAVE BEEN A "RANDOM GLITCH" OR "BAD FUEL". THANKFULLY, THIS HAPPENED ON A LIGHTLY TRAVELED ROAD AND WE WERE HEADING DOWNHILL AND ABLE TO COAST AND FIND A PLACE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. IF THIS WERE A BUSY ROAD OR WE WERE NOT ABLE TO PULL COMPLETELY OFF THE ROAD THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH MORE SERIOUS ISSUE. WE HAVE ONLY OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR LESS THAN A MONTH SO WE CAN'T SAY WHETHER IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE THAT. IT HAS NOT OCCURRED IN THE 1000+ MILES WE HAVE PUT ON THE CAR SINCE IT OCCURRED. *TR

THE FIRST TIME, LUCKILY, SHE WAS ABLE TO COAST ACROSS FOUR LANES OF TRAFFIC TO THE SHOULDER BECAUSE THIS HAPPENED WHERE TWO INTERSTATES MERGE AND THE IS NOT A SHOULDER ON THE LEFT. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY. THE DEALER STATED IT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND HAS BEEN RECALLED ON OTHER MODELS BUT NOT THE EDGE. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND I GOT THE IMPRESSION THEY DID NOT CARE ABOUT THE ISSUE OR THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE DRIVING THEIR VEHICLES. BECAUSE OF THIS WE TRADED OUR VEHICLE AT A LOSS WITHIN A WEEK OF SPENDING $700 TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY. *TR

I PUT MY VEHICLE IN PARK AND TURNED IT OFF. WHEN I WENT TO TURN IT BACK ON IT HESITATED FOR A MINUTE, BUT THEN STARTED. THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN UNTIL A FEW WEEKS LATER WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 60MPH! I'VE HAD IT HAPPEN MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE THEN AND ALMOST BEING HIT A FEW OTHER TIMES. I'VE NOTICED THAT I DON'T HAVE AS MUCH POWER WHEN ACCELERATING EVEN WHEN THE WRENCH DOESN'T COME UP. TODAY IT HAPPENED TWICE WITHIN A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THIS TIME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY WON'T HAVE A RECALL WHEN SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE AN ISSUE! I'VE ALMOST BEEN HIT MULTIPLE TIMES WHEN THIS OCCURS AND I WOULD RATHER NOT HAVE ME OR MY CHILD HURT FROM A MALFUNCTION THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED! *TR

THE CAR WAS IDLING VERY ROUGHLY, BUT WHEN I PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL NOTHING HAPPENED. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER ON THE ROAD SO I HAD TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD! I AM SO LUCKY THAT NO ONE REAR-ENDED ME BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER OFF THE ROAD. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND WAITED A MINUTE OR TWO AND TURNED THE CAR BACK ON. THE ACCELERATOR WAS WORKING SO I HEADED HOME. THE CAR WENT "LIMP" TWO MORE TIMES BEFORE I ARRIVED HOME A COUPLE OF MILES DOWN THE ROAD. THE NEXT DAY MY HUSBAND FOLLOWED ME TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH HIS EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON. MY EDGE WENT "LIMP" TWICE ON THE WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE MECHANIC WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM AND DIAGNOSED A BAD THROTTLE BODY. IT WAS REPLACED FOR ABOUT $650.00 AND THE CAR RUNS FINE NOW. THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED! I THANK MY LUCKY STARS THAT THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN ON A BUSY INTERSTATE. *TR

IT DROVE REALLY SLOW AND SO I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE TURNED OFF THE TRUCK RESTARTED AND SEEMED FINE. THERE WERE CARS COMING UP BEHIND ME THANK GOODNESS NO ACCIDENT. MADE IT TO MY SONS DOCTOR APPOINTMENT AND QUICKLY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE GUY SAID HE HAS HEARD NOTHING WITH THE FORD EDGE AND DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE WRENCH MEANT. HE SAID I NEED TO BRING IT IN AND I WILL BE CHARGED $125 JUST TO LOOK AT IT. I ASKED IF IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE BACK WITH MY SON AND HE JUST SAID I DON'T KNOW. SO I ASKED WHY WOULD THE HANDBOOK SAY TO CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY? APPARENTLY THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THIS AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND DO NOT WANT SOMETHING SERIOUS TO HAPPEN FOR SOMETHING THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT! *TR

Opened Sep 28, 2016 · Closed Mar 20, 2017
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Interior Lighting; Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the interior dome lights staying on continuously. Ford data received from the Information Request letter corresponding to this investigation indicates the failures were caused by contamination of the electrical contacts on the switch located within each door latch that tells the vehicle if the door is open or closed. All four doors contain the same latch design and switch.According to Ford, the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the position of the switch and continuously samples it to detect a state of change. After a closed door state is detected, a continuous wetting current designed to keep the electrical contacts clean is sent from the BCM to the switches as long as the BCM is active.Beginning with the 2011 model year Edge vehicles, a change in BCM strategy resulted in a reduction of the wetting current sent out to clean the switch contacts by more than 75%.Over time, this low level of current is not sufficient to keep the switch contacts clean and contamination build up causes them to fail as described above.During the course of this investigation, ODI has identified a total of 1,983 complaints related to the door ajar light.Of these complaints, 14 indicated that a door opened while driving.Twelve of the 14 door opening events were situations where an occupant of the vehicle (often a child) opened a passenger door because the doors were not locked. The remaining two complaints involved a door opening on its own because the driver was unaware that the door was unlatched. There were no accidents but one complainant reported that a shoulder injury was caused by the driver having to repeatedly slam the door in an effort to get the door ajar light to turn off. After reviewing all available data, an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety has not been identified. The door latches themselves continue to function properly, remaining securely latched until acted upon by a driver or passenger.Child safety locks on the rear doors continue to function properly and can be used to prevent the rear doors from opening via the inside door handles.Vehicle crashworthiness is not affected by the lock condition of the doors and all active safety systems continue to function normally even if the vehicle BCM believes one or more doors is open.In addition, no accidents or accident related injuries have been reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.ODI numbers for the reports cited above are shown in the attached document.
