While conducting an at-home SYNC2 software update to version 3.10 via a properly formatted USB flash drive, the component that failed was the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) resulting in the vehicle's entire Infotainment software, the back-up camera, GPS, Bluetooth, Radio, Climate Controls, essentially all functions through the center touch screen to completely stop functioning. Roughly half way through the SYNC2 update which consisted of having the vehicle in an engine-on idle-state as required by Ford, the center touch screen displaying the update progress bar faded to black and ambient lights were lost. Ford claims that this at-home update could take anywhere from 45-60 minutes. I allotted 90 minutes for the update to complete its processes thinking the screen going black was normal during this update. After realizing the screen didn't come back on after a long while, I knew a bigger problem existed. The vehicle has been inspected by technicians at a local Ford dealership and their conclusion was to spend $1,888 plus labor and taxes to replace the APIM. I do not agree with Ford and their conclusion on this incident given that I had shared the reason as to how this occurred in the first place. No warning was given or error code provided during the day of the incident. I followed Ford's directions for an at-home update and now as a result, my vehicle is not fully functional and Ford is making me pay for it.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, I HAVE A 2011 FORD EDGE LIMITED THAT I BOUGHT FROM SHULTZ FORD IN WEXFORD PA IN 2014. I HAD WONDERFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE AND COULDN'T ASK FOR A BETTER TEAM TO WORK WITH. [XXX] WAS A GREAT SALESMAN AND TREATED ME LIKE I WAS HIS FRIEND INSTEAD OF A SALESMAN. MY EXPERIENCE WAS THE BEST! IN MARCH OF 2016, I WAS MADE AWARE OF THE APIM MODULE FOR MY 2011 FORD EDGE LIMITED BEING EXTENDED FROM THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURES DATE. I NOTIFIED SHULTZ IN MARCH OF 2016 ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED BY ONE MONTH. IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT BY ANY MEANS, BUT TO ME AND MY FAMILY IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN AND ALSO A LIABILITY. YOU SEE, I HAVE 4 PRECIOUS CHILDREN AND THEY ARE ACTIVE AND ALWAYS PLAYING FROM AGES 2 TO 9 YEARS OLD. IF THEY ARE PLAYING IN THE YARD I CANNOT SEE THEM WHEN I PUT MY FORD IN REVERSE, AND AS YOU KNOW IN THE PAST AND NOW SEVERAL CHILDREN HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES DUE DRIVERS NOT KNOWING IF ANYTHING IS BEHIND THEM. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME AND GIVES ME ANXIETY THINKING OF THIS. I TRULY AND HONESTLY FEEL THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL AND NOT JUST AN EXTENDED WARRANTY REPAIR. SO AT PRESENT DAY, MY BACK UP CAMERA CONTINUES NOT TO WORK AND BLACKS OUT AND I DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA IF ANYONE IS BEHIND ME OR NOT. IT'S VERY DISCOURAGING BECAUSE I LOVE FORD AND THE PRODUCT THAT YOU PRODUCE. ALL I'M ASKING IS THAT YOU WILL REPLACE THIS APIM MODULE BECAUSE FORD NEEDS TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF ITS CUSTOMERS AND GUARANTEE ITS CARS ARE MADE WELL AND FUNCTIONING AS THEY WERE INTENDED. I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU IN THE NEAR FUTURE. SINCERELY, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

PE16012 · Door Ajar Warning Light Always On

Opened Sep 28, 2016 · Closed Mar 20, 2017

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Interior Lighting; Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the interior dome lights staying on continuously. Ford data received from the Information Request letter corresponding to this investigation indicates the failures were caused by contamination of the electrical contacts on the switch located within each door latch that tells the vehicle if the door is open or closed. All four doors contain the same latch design and switch.According to Ford, the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the position of the switch and continuously samples it to detect a state of change. After a closed door state is detected, a continuous wetting current designed to keep the electrical contacts clean is sent from the BCM to the switches as long as the BCM is active.Beginning with the 2011 model year Edge vehicles, a change in BCM strategy resulted in a reduction of the wetting current sent out to clean the switch contacts by more than 75%.Over time, this low level of current is not sufficient to keep the switch contacts clean and contamination build up causes them to fail as described above.During the course of this investigation, ODI has identified a total of 1,983 complaints related to the door ajar light.Of these complaints, 14 indicated that a door opened while driving.Twelve of the 14 door opening events were situations where an occupant of the vehicle (often a child) opened a passenger door because the doors were not locked. The remaining two complaints involved a door opening on its own because the driver was unaware that the door was unlatched. There were no accidents but one complainant reported that a shoulder injury was caused by the driver having to repeatedly slam the door in an effort to get the door ajar light to turn off. After reviewing all available data, an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety has not been identified. The door latches themselves continue to function properly, remaining securely latched until acted upon by a driver or passenger.Child safety locks on the rear doors continue to function properly and can be used to prevent the rear doors from opening via the inside door handles.Vehicle crashworthiness is not affected by the lock condition of the doors and all active safety systems continue to function normally even if the vehicle BCM believes one or more doors is open.In addition, no accidents or accident related injuries have been reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.ODI numbers for the reports cited above are shown in the attached document.
