The contact owns a 2015 Ducati Monster 821. The contact stated that while riding at a moderate rate of speed, the rear brakes failed as the motorcycle began to roll backward. The contact notified the dealer of the failure and expressed his concern about the dangers of a possible failure. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The brake lines were bled, and the motorcycle was repaired. Upon speaking with the dealer, he was informed that they were aware of the potential failure with the brakes however, no action was taken. The contact felt unsafe owning the motorcycle. The motorcycle was sold. Recently, the contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 21V335000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The contact notified the manufacturer and expressed outrage that similar motorcycles were still in operation despite the known failure. The motorcycle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 1,500.
Ducati North America (Ducati) is recalling certain 2015-2021 Monster 821, 2014-2021 Monster 1200 S/STD, and 2016-2019 Monster 1200 R motorcycles. The rear brake hoses may be susceptible to heat damage.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Damaged brake hoses may cause the rear brakes to fail, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the rear brake hoses, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 12, 2021. Owners may contact Ducati customer service at 1-888-391-5446.
