I BOUGHT MOTORCYCLE USED JUST RECENTLY FROM A PRIVATE OWNER. WHEN TEMPERATURES STARTED REACHING UP TO 90 DEGREES AND ABOVE, THE THROTTLE BECAME VERY HESITANT WHEN DOING A SLOW ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE, THEN SURGE FORWARD A COUPLE TIMES.. EVEN WHEN HOLDING THE THROTTLE CONSTANT. THIS HAS PUT ME IN DANGEROUS SITUATIONS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS LIKE WHEN MAKING TURNS FROM A STOP AND THE BIKE DOES NOT KEEP THE CENTRIFUGAL FORCE TO HOLD THE BIKE UP BECAUSE IT HESITATES, OR WHEN ACCELERATING IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC OR IN BUSY CITY STREETS (I LIVE IN THE WASHINGTON DC METRO AREA). THIS IS 800 POUND VEHICLE ON 2-WHEELS. ALONG WITH A RIDER, PASSENGER, AND LUGGAGE, I HAVE TO BALANCE AROUND 1200 POUNDS ON 2-WHEELS AND IT BECOMES A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN IF THE BIKE IS GOING TO STALL, HESITATE AND SURGE FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY... PUTTING ME AND MY PASSENGER IN DANGER. THERE ARE NOT TOO MANY BMW MOTORCYCLE DEALERSHIPS AND THE TWO CLOSEST ONES (40 MILES AND 60 MILES AWAY) GAVE ME A HARD TIME ABOUT IT AND SAID THEY COULD NOT FIX IT. I WAS TOLD THAT THEIR IS A FIX BY REPLACING THE MOTRONIC COMPUTER IN MY 1999 K1200LT AND PULLING A CAT CODE PLUG UNDER THE TRUNK, BUT BMW WON'T DO THIS. WHY? THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AND I'M SURPRISED THAT THIS IS NOT A RECALL.*AK

WHILE RIDING THE MOTORCYCLE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, I NOTICED A THUMPING SOUND AND VIBRATION COMING FROM THE AREA OF THE REAR WHEEL. INITIALLY IT WAS INTERMITTENT AND INSPECTION OF THE TIRE AND WHEEL DID NOT REVEAL THE CAUSE. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES THE NOISE AND VIBRATION BECAME NOTICEABLY WORSE AND AS I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THE FINAL DRIVE FAILED AND SPRAYED THE FINAL DRIVE OIL ONTO THE REAR TIRE AND WHEEL. APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE THE SPEEDOMETER SENSOR, WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE FINAL DRIVE UNIT, BECAME DEFECTIVE AND WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS HAPPENING FAIRLY OFTEN WITH THIS MODEL OF MOTORCYCLE, AND IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO HAVE GEAR OIL SPRAYED ONTO THE TIRES.*AK

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a defect petition requesting that it open an investigation into model year (MY) 1998-2009 BMW KLT series motorcycles for final drive bearing failures. The petitioner asked NHTSA to issue an order that [BMW] be required to recall the affected models for inspection ofcomponent wear and proper assembly of the [final drive] bearing.ODI has reviewed the petition, assessed relevant consumer complaints, and gathered other data in the course of investigating this issue.Based on its review, ODI does not believe that a safety-related defect trend currently exists for final drive bearing failures in the subject motorcycles. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is denied. However, the agency will continue to monitor information related to this issue and will take further action if warranted. For detailed information, see the Federal Register notice: https://federalregister.gov/a/2013-13779.
