DURING A MORNING COMMUTE TO WORK SEVERAL LIGHTS WERE OUT ON THE VEHICLE. WARNING LIGHTS CONTINUED POP UP ON THE INFO DISPLAY IN THE DASH. HALF THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS HAD STOPPED WORKING. 1/2 OF EACH TAIL LIGHT, 1 OF THE 2 BACK UP LAMPS, THE LICENSE PLATE LAMP, 1 HIGH BEAM, 1 LOW BEAN 1 OF EACH SETS OF TURN SIGNALS (FRONT AND REAR). I INVESTIGATED THE FUSE PANEL UNDER THE HOOD ONLY TO FIND A COMPLETELY MELTED FUSE (SLOT 16, 30A FUSE). AFTER SPEAKING WITH SEVERAL VW DEALERS, SOME ADMITTED TO SEEING HE ISSUE SOME DID NOT. MOST OF THE DEALERS HOWEVER HAD THE PART AVAILABLE OR COULD GET IT IN 1 DAY. NOT HAVING MANY OPTIONS, I PURCHASED THE PART ($280), AND REPLACED THE ENTIRE (NON SERVICEABLE) FUSE PANEL MYSELF. AT THIS TIME, THE ISSUE HAS NOT RE-OCCURRED WITH THE NEW PART. I STILL HAVE THE PARTS (FUSE BLOCK AND 30A MELTED FUSE) FOR REVIEW IF NECESSARY, ALONG WITH THE RECEIPT FRONT HE DEALER I PURCHASED THE PART FROM. I BELIEVE THIS IS SOMETHING VW SHOULD BE CONCERNED WITH AND SHOULD BE TAKING STEPS TO SUPPORT THE REPAIR , NOT STICKING THEIR OWNERS WITH THE $$$ AND POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARDS INHERENT TO ELECTRICAL FAULTS AND LACK OF VISIBILITY FOR THE DRIVER (AND TO OTHER DRIVERS). *TR

UPON STARTING MY CAR ONE MORNING, I WAS GREETED WITH MANY ALERTS HAVING TO DO WITH THE RIGHT FRONT HEADLIGHT, FOG LIGHT, BLINKER, BRAKE LIGHT, REAR PARKING LIGHT AND LICENSE PLATE LIGHTS, ALL OF WHICH DID NOT WORK. THE ALERTS CONTINUED TO CYCLE THROUGH DURING THE ENTIRE TRIP (20 MINUTES FROM HOME TO WORK) AND THE STATUS DID NOT CHANGE WHEN I RESTARTED MY CAR TO GO HOME THAT NIGHT. AS I WAS DRIVING HOME THAT NIGHT (10 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE) MY RIGHT HEADLIGHT SUDDENLY TURNED ON AND ALL OF THE ALERTS WENT AWAY. THE NEXT MORNING, THE ALERTS WERE BACK ON AND NONE OF THE RIGHT EXTERIOR LIGHTS WERE WORKING. I HAD THE CAR CHECKED AND IT TURNS OUT THE 30 AMP FUSE IN THE BACK OF THE FUSE BOX WAS MELTED ALONG WITH PART OF THE FUSE BOX THAT SITS AROUND THE FUSE. IT IS GOING TO COST ME OVER $600 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AND THIS IS CLEARLY NOT CAUSED BY NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF OTHER DRIVERS ARE POSTING ABOUT HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR TIGUANS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IT IS IMPERATIVE TO HAVE BOTH HEADLIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND THE MELTING OF THE FUSE BOX AND FUSE INDICATES THERE WAS A SMALL FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY VOLKSWAGEN AND THE SAFETY HAZARD NEEDS TO BE FIXED. *TR

UPON STARTING MY 2010 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN, THE DASH INDICATOR WILL BEGIN CYCLING THROUGH THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS, (E.G., RIGHT FRONT LOW BEAM, RIGHT FRONT FOG LIGHT) NOTING THAT EACH IS NOT WORKING. THIS ISSUE INITIALLY HAPPENED ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO AND HAS OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY SINCE THEN. EACH TIME, THE LIGHTS THAT HAVE BEEN NOTED AS NOT OPERATIONAL ON THE DASH HAVE, IN FACT, NOT BEEN WORKING. UNTIL RECENTLY, THE PROBLEM WOULD SELF CORRECT, TYPICALLY AFTER RE-STARTING THE CAR. HOWEVER, AS OF YESTERDAY (11/3/2013), THE LIGHTS THAT THE DASH IS NOW INDICATING ARE NONFUNCTIONAL HAVE NOT STARTED WORKING AGAIN. THIS INCLUDES THE RIGHT HEAD LIGHT, THIRD BRAKE LIGHT, LICENSE PLATE LIGHT, AND ALL TURN SIGNALS. WHEN I CALLED MY LOCAL VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP, A MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO BRING IT IN SO THAT A MECHANIC WHO SPECIALIZES IN ELECTRICAL COULD LOOK AT IT. WHEN I ASKED IF THIS WAS A PROBLEM THEY HAD SEEN WITH OTHER TIGUANS, HE LET ME KNOW THAT SIMILAR ISSUES HAD BEEN REPORTED AND THAT THE CULPRIT WAS OFTEN A MELTED FUSE BOX UNDER THE HOOD. HE ALSO INDICATED THAT MY SEPARATE COMPLAINT REGARDING THE INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF THE REMOTE FOR UNLOCKING (BUT NOT LOCKING) THE CAR MAY BE A RELATED ELECTRICAL ISSUE. I HAVE NOT TAKEN THE CAR IN YET, BUT I WILL NEED TO DO SO GIVEN THE SAFETY ISSUES PRESENTED BY FAILING AND UNRELIABLE EXTERIOR LIGHTS. *TR

TOOK THE TIGUAN TO MY DEALER, THE CAR WAS INSPECTED AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE FUSE BOX HAD MELTED. I ASKED WHAT THE CAUSE WAS AND THEY GAVE ME NO EXPLANATION, BUT DID STATE IT WOULD COST AROUND $630 TO REPAIR. WORK WAS COMPLETED AND THE SYSTEM IS WORKING FINE, BUT THEY COULD GIVE ME NO GUARANTEE IT WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN. *TR

THIS EXACT PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED BY MANY OTHER VW TIGUAN OWNERS ON DIFFERENT ONLINE FORA, THUS SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. MAY EASILY CAUSE MORE SEVERE DAMAGE BECAUSE OF SHORT-CIRCUITING OR ARCING OF 30 AM CIRCUIT. *TR

I THEN POPPED THE HOOD AND OPENED UP THE FUSE BOX TO MAKE SURE THE FUSES WERE SEATED CORRECTLY. UPON CHECKING THE FUSES I NOTICED THE BOX ITSELF WAS MELTED AND SCORCHED MEANING THERE HAD BEEN FIRE AT SOME POINT UNDER THE HOOD. I THEN TOOK MY VOLKSWAGEN TO THE CLOSEST VW DEALERSHIP SERVICE STATION. IT COST $400 (MICHIGAN) TO REPLACE THE FUSE BOX, ALSO LEAVING ME QUESTIONING IF THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. AFTER SOME INVESTIGATION ONLINE I FOUND THAT THIS IS NOT RARE. THE VW DEALERSHIP THAT DID THE REPAIR STATED THAT THIS WAS THE 8TH ONE HE HIMSELF HAS DONE. HOPEFULLY THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. LIGHTS RANDOMLY GOING OUT IS A SAFETY HAZARD,AND COULD LEAD TO CAR ACCIDENTS, INJURYS, AND FATALITIES. *TR

EA18003 · Air Bag Clockspring Failure

Opened Apr 18, 2018 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags; Air Bags:frontal; Air Bags:frontal:driver Clockspring/spiral Cassette

In August 2015, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) launched Safety Recall 15V-483 to address the loss of the protection provided by the front driver air bag in several models due to the failure of the clockspring.Debris entry into the steering wheel hub can result in contamination and ultimately failure of the clockspring in 2010-2014 Model Year (MY) CC, Passat, Eos, Golf, GTI, Tiguan, Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen models.Contamination of the clockspring can cause the ribbon cable to tear resulting in loss of the electrical connection to the front driver air bag and any steering wheel mounted controls. The loss of the electrical connection to the front driver air bag will result in illumination of the air bag warning light and will prevent operation of the front driver air bag in a crash of sufficient severity requiring a commanded deployment. In November 2017, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ17-009) after the agency received 90 complaints alleging failure of the clockspring in the subject models.Several of the complaints allege failure of the clockspring after receiving the recall remedy. The majority of the complaints allege the same failure mode without being included in the original recall, 15V-483.In its March 2018 response to ODI's Information Request under the Recall Query, Volkswagen provided approximately 700 consumer complaints and field reports on the recalled vehicles. These reports allege clockspring failure similar to the NHTSA reports described above. To date, NHTSA has received approximately 154 allegations of clockspring failure since the recall has launched. The total of 852 reports shown in the table above eliminates 6 duplicative reports received by ODI and the manufacturer. An Engineering Analysis has been opened to further evaluate the scope and effectiveness of the remedy associated with 15V-483 and perform a thorough review of the design changes implemented by Volkswagen and its suppliers to address this issue. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.NHTSA.gov under the following ODI identification numbers: 11080741, 11079877, 11079805, 11079124, 11076709, 11076645, 11076297, 11076249, 11076133, 11075756, 11075726, 11075358, 11075259, 11075055, 11074920, 11074565, 11073090, 11072745, 11072457, 11072089, 11071933, 11071880, 11071630, 11071592, 11067396, 11067061, 11066738, 11066601, 11066511, 11065909, 11065871, 11065262, 11064701, 11064564, 11064544, 11064531, 11063961, 11063501, 11063095, 11062772, 11062464, 11062353, 11062344, 11061463, 11061310, 11061311, 11060735, 11058154, 11057519, 11057477, 11057341, 11056793, 11056243, 11056063, 11055639, 11054279, 11052812, 11052678, 11052384, 11052228, 11051336, 11051155, 11051074, 11048803, 11047037, 11044226, 11043653, 11039142, 11033893, 11033330, 11032548, 11025475, 11025356, 11024647, 11023423, 11020570, 11020312, 11019415, 11019067, 11015441, 11015431, 11014595, 11014016, 11013709, 11013415, 11012596, 11011753, 11006668, 11006521, 11006307, 11006181, 11005301, 11003865, 11001780, 11001783, 11001334, 10994184, 10993360, 10993524, 10992490, 10985926, 10983678, 10981220, 10980831, 10980941, 10980549, 10979418, 10971152, 10967344, 10967155, 10959968, 10958624, 10957279, 10956488, 10949129, 10947562, 10945122, 10936498, 10936543, 10933950, 10927311, 10925421, 10924034, 10915612, 10915569, 10911171, 10902066, 10898733, 10896537, 10896510, 10895526, 10893938, 10891686, 10864967, 10863742, 10861984, 10851242, 10822505, 10821562, 10818403, 10795068, 10794402, 10788738, 10787804, 10782544, 10780725, 10780145, 10779145, 10776477, 10775448, 10763492, 10763423, 10763289, 10762670, 10760644, 10758777, 10749901, 10748922

Volkswagen Group of America (VW) is conducting a safety recall of approximately 62,155 model year (MY) 2009-2011 Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles to address a partial loss of the exterior lighting (see NHTSA recall 13V-569 for more information). These vehicles' exterior lighting system is protected by two separate fuses contained in a fuse box located in the engine compartment.According to VW, high thermal cycling and soft-coated fuse coating material used at the F16 (also referred to as SB16) location causes movement between the fuse blade and socket, resulting in abrasions on the fuse coating material. This increases resistance and results in overheating of the fuse and disruption of electrical current flow to roughly half of the vehicle's exterior lighting circuits. Examples include loss of one of each of the following: low beam headlight, high beam headlight, brake light, and turn signal light involving the front and rear of the vehicle.VW has stated that the subject F16 fuse in the Tiguan model was used in several other Volkswagen models.According to VW, the temperature of the vehicle's engine and the fuse box varies by vehicle model.ODI found that the complaint and warranty rates for the MY 2009-2010 Tiguan are more than four times greater than that of MY 2009-2010 Volkswagen Jetta sedans.ODI is aware of VW's plan to take a service action of some, but not all, of the other vehicle models. The action will cover MY 2009-2010 Jetta sedan and MY 2009 GTI vehicles.ODI will monitor complaints to NHTSA on all other Volkswagen models equipped with the same subject fuse and take further action if warranted. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers: 10362206, 10471503, 10490408, 10501271, 10504495, 10508638, 10512642, 10520573, 10521147, 10522909, 10523748, 10526032, 10534679, 10538004, 10538410, 10543629, 10544805, 10545540, 10547334, 10547530, 10547775, 10549584, 10550140, 10550903, 10551486, 10551503, 10551538, 10551776, 10551816, 10551848, 10551853, 10552153, 10552322, 10552740, 10552811, 10552866, 10553122, 10553299, 10554352, 10554441, 10554443, 10554730, 10554890, 10555047, 10555080, 10555527, 10555540, 10555988, 10556475, 10558014, 10559441, 10559447, 10561642, 10562693.
