ON OCT. 24, 2015 WHEN I TRIED TO START MY CAR, IT SHOOK, IDLED ROUGHLY AND STALLED. I TRIED AGAIN AND IT WOULDN'T START. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY VOLKSWAGEN DEALER. THEY CHECKED IT AND TOLD ME THE TIMING CHAIR HAD BROKEN CAUSING CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. THE ESTIMATE FOR REPAIRS WAS $4952.29. AND IF THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED, IT WOULD BE $6500. VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA GROUP WOULD PAY NOTHING TOWARD THE REPAIR CLAIMING IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. (THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY WAS 5 YEARS/60,000 MILES.) THE CAR HAD 49,000 MILES, BUT WAS OVER THE 5 YEAR TIME PERIOD. BUT A TIMING CHAIN SHOULD BE GOOD FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR; UNLESS THERE IS A DEFECTIVE PART. YOU HAVE A TSB (TB-15-12-01 -NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10045560) ON THE "TENSIONER" WHICH CAUSES THE CHAIN TO BECOME LOOSE, SKIP AND BREAK. MOREOVER, THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON YOUR SITE ABOUT THIS EXACT ISSUE. VOLKSWAGEN FAILED TO NOTIFY CUSTOMERS OF THIS DEFECT AND THERE WAS NO RECALL. THIS IS A TICKING TIME BOMB THAT CAN RESULT IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE DAY BEFORE THIS HAPPENED, I WAS TRAVELLING ON THE FLORIDA TURNPIKE FOR 8 HOURS AT THE POSTED SPEED OF 70 MPH. IF THE CHAIN HAD BROKEN DURING THAT TIME, IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A FATAL ACCIDENT INVOLVING ME AND/OR OTHERS. WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A RECALL? WHY SHOULD VOLKSWAGEN BE ALLOWED TO PUT MY LIFE AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS AT RISK? WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY FOR VOLKSWAGEN'S NEGLIGENCE WHEN THEY WERE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS? THIS DEFECT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO KILL. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE YOU WILL TAKE ACTION TO REQUIRE VOLKSWAGEN TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?

NOTICED OIL LEAK ON OTHERWISE SPOTLESS DRIVEWAY A FEW DAYS AFTER 100K SERVICE AT VW DEALERSHIP. RETURNED TO DEALER WHERE REAR MAIN SEAL WAS IDENTIFIED AS THE SOURCE. ESTIMATE WAS $1400 TOTAL COST TO REPAIR ALONG WITH OIL HOSES TO TURBO. DISCUSSED DETAILS AND FREQUENCY OF RMS REPAIR WITH TECH, SINCE TRANSMISSION HAS TO BE REMOVED. ALSO RESEARCHED VW FORUM THREADS ON RMS FAILURE TO FIND THAT 2008+ MODEL VWS ARE MOST AFFECTED, 2009 TIGUANS IN PARTICULAR. OF THE 13 COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA SITE REGARDING FAILED REAR MAIN SEALS ON VWS, MORE THAN HALF (7 OF 13 = 54%) ARE FROM OWNERS OF 2009 TIGUANS. (3 OF 13 COMPLAINTS WERE FOR 2009 PASSATS, WITH 1 EACH FOR A 2009 CC, A 2011 TIGUAN, AND A 2012 JETTA.). EVEN WITH THIS SMALL SAMPLING, HAVING 54% OF THE RMS FAILURES AFFECTING THE SAME MODEL (TIGUAN) OF THE SAME MODEL YEAR (2009) IS MORE THAN A COINCIDENCE. IT SHOWS A TREND. VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA ACKNOWLEDGES NO SUCH TREND, AND VW CUSTOMER CARE REFUSES ANY RESPONSIBILITY BEYOND WARRANTY. *TR

HAD TOWED TO VW DEALER IN HOMETOWN AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE GEARS IN THE REAR END HAD COME APART AND SEIZED THE REAR WHEELS. **IF THIS HAD OCCURRED AT NORMAL INTERSTATE SPEEDS I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED WORSE RESULTS UP TO DEATH. WHEELS WERE COMPLETELY LOCKED UNTIL CAR WAS PUT INTO REVERSE TO UNBIND THE AWD SYSTEM. *TR

THIS IS A SEPARATE INCIDENT (I JUST FILLED A COMPLAINT ODI 10401437. SAME VW TIGUAIN. THE WEEKEND OF 4/30/11 AND 5/1/11 I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS ACTING WEIRD. I WAS WATCHING THE TACHOMETER AND IT WANTED TO RED LINE, IT WAS SKIPPING GEARS, AND AT TIMES WANTED TO STALL OUT. THIS WAS VERY, VERY SCARY. IF I WENT TO PASS SOMEBODY THE VEHICLE WOULD SKIP GEARS AND NOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY, AT TIMES IT WOULD CATCH THE CORRECT GEAR AND WANT TO RED LINE (7,000 RPMS) I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS TO GET IT TO SWITCH TO THE CORRECT GEAR. I PULLED OVER TO A REST STOP AND PUT IT IN PARK, IT WAS IDLING UNDER 800 RPMS AND WANTED TO STALL OUT. I SHUT IT OFF FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND TURNED IT ON, IN REVERSE IT WAS IDLING UNDER 800 RPMS AND WANTED TO STALL I GAVE IT GAS AND DROVE IT HOME. I BROUGHT THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 5/2/11 THEY HAD THE CAR FOR THE DAY AND TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE BEHAVIOR OF THE VEHICLE AND TO COME PICK IT UP, NOW THEY CALLED ME AT 4:35 PM THEY CLOSED AT 5:00 PM. I WAS SO UPSET I SAID LETS TAKE A RIDE WITH AN ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC, NOW, SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE. I WAS VERY, VERY SCARED THE WEEKEND PRIOR TO THIS, SO I WAS SPEAKING LOUDLY ON THE PHONE AND BASICALLY THROWING A FIT BECAUSE I KNEW THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE! SO I GET TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC WAS PRESENT WHEN I ARRIVED, I HAD BEEN CRYING BECAUSE I WAS SO SCARED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC ASKED ME IF HE COULD TAKE IT HOME I SAID ABSOLUTELY, AND THE DEALERSHIP SET UP A RENTAL FOR ME FREE OF CHARGE. I GUESS WHEN THEY SPOKE TO ME OVER THE PHONE AND SAW ME IN PERSON THEY WERE CONVINCED I WAS NOT MAKING THIS UP. THE NEXT DAY THEY REPLACED 2 FUEL INJECTORS AND EXPLAINED TO ME IT WAS NOT THE TRANSMISSION. THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND I THOUGHT IT STILL WAS NOT CORRECTED, BROUGHT IT IN AGAIN AND TOLD IT WAS NOT MALFUNCTIONING. *TR

Volkswagen Group of America (VW) is conducting a safety recall of approximately 62,155 model year (MY) 2009-2011 Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles to address a partial loss of the exterior lighting (see NHTSA recall 13V-569 for more information). These vehicles' exterior lighting system is protected by two separate fuses contained in a fuse box located in the engine compartment.According to VW, high thermal cycling and soft-coated fuse coating material used at the F16 (also referred to as SB16) location causes movement between the fuse blade and socket, resulting in abrasions on the fuse coating material. This increases resistance and results in overheating of the fuse and disruption of electrical current flow to roughly half of the vehicle's exterior lighting circuits. Examples include loss of one of each of the following: low beam headlight, high beam headlight, brake light, and turn signal light involving the front and rear of the vehicle.VW has stated that the subject F16 fuse in the Tiguan model was used in several other Volkswagen models.According to VW, the temperature of the vehicle's engine and the fuse box varies by vehicle model.ODI found that the complaint and warranty rates for the MY 2009-2010 Tiguan are more than four times greater than that of MY 2009-2010 Volkswagen Jetta sedans.ODI is aware of VW's plan to take a service action of some, but not all, of the other vehicle models. The action will cover MY 2009-2010 Jetta sedan and MY 2009 GTI vehicles.ODI will monitor complaints to NHTSA on all other Volkswagen models equipped with the same subject fuse and take further action if warranted. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers: 10362206, 10471503, 10490408, 10501271, 10504495, 10508638, 10512642, 10520573, 10521147, 10522909, 10523748, 10526032, 10534679, 10538004, 10538410, 10543629, 10544805, 10545540, 10547334, 10547530, 10547775, 10549584, 10550140, 10550903, 10551486, 10551503, 10551538, 10551776, 10551816, 10551848, 10551853, 10552153, 10552322, 10552740, 10552811, 10552866, 10553122, 10553299, 10554352, 10554441, 10554443, 10554730, 10554890, 10555047, 10555080, 10555527, 10555540, 10555988, 10556475, 10558014, 10559441, 10559447, 10561642, 10562693.
