2024 Volkswagen Taos

The center console repeatedly displays the message "Emergency call cannot be made." The message first appeared in approximately a few months after starting the lease and has recurred since. When it appears it interrupts navigation guidance and audio playback, and it can repeat several times during a single drive, including while driving at highway speed. The repeated alerts are a distraction while driving. The emergency call (SOS) system does not function reliably. I cannot depend on it to summon assistance after a crash, which is the purpose of the system. The vehicle was taken to several authorized VW dealers. They said this is a known issue and had little to offer. I contacted VW directly who helped change the network configuration on the telematics unit. The fault stopped for approximately 6 month and then returned. It is currently occurring on a regular basis. The vehicle has approximately 10,000 miles. No crash, fire, or injury has resulted.

The speedometer is off 3%. When the speedometer indicates 65mph The vehicle is actually traveling at 68mph. At 55mph Indicated the vehicle is actually traveling at 57mph. The faster you go the more off the speedometer is. This was verified using GPS on two separate smart phones. After doing some research I've discovered that all mid to late 2024 VW Taos 4-motion vehicles are the same as my vehicle. VW made a mid-year production change from 215/50R18 to 215/55R18 tires and did not code/calibrate the speedometer for the different tire size. Many many other 2024 Taos 4-motion owners on vehicle forums like VW vortex and others are,like myself, complaining of the slow reading speedometer. This raises safety and legal questions such as owners receiving speeding tickets or other infractions. Also the vehicle is traveling faster than Indicated could potentially pose a safety concern.

While my vehicle was completely stopped at a red light, I suddenly heard a very loud explosive sound from the rear of my car. Upon inspection, I saw that my back windshield had completely shattered. The glass exhibited long, linear fracture patterns radiating outward without any central point of impact. There were no circular, spiderweb, or cone-shaped cracks—patterns that would typically indicate an external object striking the glass. At the time of the incident, there were no vehicles, pedestrians, or debris in the vicinity that could have caused the damage. The car was stationary, and the surrounding environment was calm with no construction, flying debris, or other hazards nearby. This strongly suggests that the breakage originated from within the glass itself rather than from an external force. As I began driving carefully toward the dealership, pieces of the glass started to detach and fall inward into the cabin, not outward—another indicator that the force came from internal stress within the glass rather than from something hitting it from the outside. The loud noise and sudden shattering posed a serious safety concern, as such an unexpected event could easily startle a driver and lead to a traffic incident if it occurred while the vehicle was in motion. My vehicle is new, with approximately 5,000 miles on it, and has been carefully maintained. It has never been involved in any accident or sustained any exterior damage. The car’s body and glass are in pristine condition, with no dents, chips, or scratches anywhere. Earlier that same day, I had cleaned and wiped down all of my windows, during which I observed no cracks, chips, or imperfections on the rear windshield. Given these circumstances, it appears that the glass failure was spontaneous—potentially due to a manufacturing defect, internal stress within the tempered glass, or thermal expansion—rather than any impact-related cause. Though my car is under warranty, VW refused to cover any costs.

Truck stutters when accelerating, as if it is going to cut off. There were 2 warning signs illuminated on the dashboard. According to the service center it was the road sign display that was malfunctioning. About 3 days later, the service tech said it could be the front camera or sensor. A week after that, it was believed to be a software issue. Almost a month later, there is still not an answer to what has caused the warning lights to come on. Still no word on the stuttering while accelerating.

The speedometer inside the vehicle is off by 4-5 mph at speeds higher than 55 mph. I have timed several miles with my cruise set at 60mph, at 65 mph, and at 70 mph. All miles were off by 4-5mph. To confirm, I used numerous GPS apps to confirm the VW Taos speedometer is indeed off. Digital radar devices on highways have confirmed this as well. I have reached out to the dealer and my local VW dealership and they do not believe this is a safety concern. If I did not notice this, this could be life changing whether it’s an accident, traffic violation, or even something more serious.

Volkswagen increased the tire diameter of the Taos S 4motion and Taos SE 4motion for 2024 and either did not recalibrate the speedometer or made an error when doing so. Some variants of the VW Atlas might have a similar issue (two reports so far). Because of this corporate negligence, the speedometer reads about 5% LOW. At an indicated 70 MPH the vehicle is actually traveling nearly 74. If exceeding the speed limit kills, then this is a safety issue. It definitely leads to people breaking the law without realizing it. I personally got a speeding ticket as a result. I thought the officer was lying about my speed--but he wasn't. The speedometer was lying. I've asked other owners of these Taos models to check, and every one that has checked (about ten so far) reports the same exact error--it's by design, not just one or two vehicles. A speedometer that reads low is not even legal in the EU. It might be legal in the US, but should not be. The regulation probably dates to a time when speedometers were entirely mechanical and could lose accuracy over time. In this case VW could have properly calibrated the speedometer but did not due to either negligence or incompetence. Perhaps it simplifies the manufacturing process, by letting them use one calibration for multiple tire sizes, and they're taking advantage of the leeway provided by a lax, outdated American regulation. It is an entirely avoidable problem, and indicates that VW does not care about the impact on its American customers. This problem only appears to affect models that are not sold in Germany, where the inaccuracy would be illegal. Please update the regulation and require VW to properly calibrate their speedometers to eliminate the harm being done to American drivers. I have photos and video to substantiate the speedometer inaccuracy. Let me know if this would help.
