Mileage: 40,000 Dealership: Tom Bush Volkswagen, Jacksonville, FL Component Affected: Service Brakes, Hydraulic – Foundation Components – Disc – Pads Complaint: I’m reporting a serious issue with the rear brakes on my 2024 Volkswagen Taos SEL. At the 30,000-mile service, Tom Bush Volkswagen in Jacksonville, FL documented the rear brake pads at 7mm. At 40,000 miles, they measured 1mm, while the front brake pads—still original—remain at 10mm. This represents excessive and uneven wear on the rear brakes in just 10,000 miles. It is not consistent with standard wear patterns, as the front brakes normally wear faster due to handling the majority of braking force. My vehicle has been driven normally and the tire wear is even at 7/32", showing no signs of abuse or hard braking. Volkswagen issued TSB VWP-22-18 acknowledging premature rear brake wear on Taos models, yet both the dealership and VW customer support claim this is “normal” wear and have refused warranty or goodwill coverage. This is not consistent with vehicle design norms or owner expectations. This may indicate a defect in the braking system, such as caliper drag or electronic parking brake malfunction. The rapid wear of rear brakes—compared to nearly untouched fronts—poses a potential safety risk, especially if the issue goes unnoticed. I am requesting NHTSA investigate this issue for potential brake system defects or improper brake bias that could compromise safe operation.

FINALLY REAR BRAKE PADS WERE REPLACED BY COACHELLA VALLEY VOLKSWAGEN ON 02/04/25 WITHOUT REAR ROTORS RESURFACED OR REPLACED AND SUCH AFFECTED THE VEHICLES BRAKE PERFORMANCE EVEN WORSE, ALMOST CAUSING ME INTO A HEAD ON COLLISION ON MY WAY HOME AFTER SPENDING THE ENTIRE DAY WAITING FOR MY VEHICLE IN THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE VEHICLE HAS HAD TROUBLE STARTING UP AS IF IT HAD A DED BATTERY. GAS DIGITAL ODOMETERS, BOTH NUMERICAL AND DASH SYMBOLS OFTEN GET FROZEN WHEN FUELING UP COMPLETELY. GAS ODOMETER WILL REFLECT ABOVE 345 MILES - 400 MILES TO THE EMPTY AND WILL REMAIN FROZEN FOR MULTIPLE DAYS. CUSTOMER HAS TO BASE DRIVING OFF THE MILES AFTER REFUELING INFORMATION SCREEN IN ORDERTO DRIVE VEHICLE. ENTIRE MEDIA SCREEN COMPLETELY FREEZES WHEN DRIVING ON A ROAD TRIP NO MATTER WHAT DEVICE IS CONNECTED BOTH ANDROID OR IPHONE. CUSTOMER HAS HAD TO PULL OVER AND COMPLETELY TURN OFF VEHICLE AROUND 5 MINUTES IN ORDER TO UNFREEZE MEDIA SCREEN. LANE KEEPING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS SPECIALLY AT HIGH TEMPERATURE DAYS. LANE KEEPING SYSTEM NOT AVAILABLE SIGN APPEARS FOR MOST OF THE DAY; HOURGLASS NEXT TO A WHITE VEHICLE SIGN WARNING APPEARS MOST OF THE DAY DURING HIGH TEMPERATURES, SIGN TURNS INTO YELLOW / ORANGE WARNING. YELLOW LANE ASSIST CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE WARNING SIGN APPEARS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DASHBOARD. YELLOW EXCLAMATION / TRIANGLE WARNING SIGN APPEARS TO THE LEFT OF THE DASHBOARD. EPC WARNING LIGHT HAS TUNRNED ON AND OFF MULTIPLE TIMES TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD SINCE VEHICLE HAD 2287 MILES.

The contact stated while driving and slowly coming to a complete stop with her daughter in the front passenger’s seat, the contact felt the brake pedal suddenly traveling further down independently, and the vehicle prematurely came to a stop. Additionally, the radio became excessively loud, causing both the contact and her daughter to feel shocked. The contact stated that there was an abnormal clicking sound coming from the dashboard, followed by an independent increase in the A/C temperature. The contact also stated that the SOS button was inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the failure could be related to the key fob radio wave. The vehicle was test-driven while the key fob was out of the vehicle; however, the failure recurred. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving 50 MPH, the front passenger's side tire became flat. The contact pulled to the side of the road. Roadside assistance was contacted and replaced the tire with the spare tire. The vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic, where the contact was informed that the wheel housing had caused a hole in the tire. The front passenger's side tire was replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.
