I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A VOLKSWAGEN DEALER ABOUT 3 MILES AWAY. AFTER THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE THEY FOUND "HOSE CONNECTOR NEAR PUMP LEAKING WASHER FLUID". THE DEALER REPLACED THE HOSE CONNECTOR. NOT LEAKING AT THIS TIME. I HAVE SINCE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR OTHER ISSUES I'M EXPERIENCING WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT WASN'T PRESENT DURING MY TEST DRIVE AND I AM FILING SEPARATE COMPLAINS FOR THOSE ISSUES BECAUSE IM BEING TOLD THAT THESE ARE NORMAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IT ONLY HAD 38 MILES. CURRENT MILEAGE 1900 MILES. *TR

WAS OUT OF TOWN IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND EXPERIENCED A NEAR COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER. THE DO NOT OPERATE VEHICLE INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON. WAS ABLE TO PULL VEHICLE OFF TO SHOULDER OF THE BUSY FREEWAY AND SHUT DOWN THE VEHICLE. AFTER A FEW MOMENTS I RE-STARTED THE VEHICLE. IT STILL WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON SO I SHUT IT DOWN AGAIN. WAS ABLE TO CALL THE VW SERVICE CENTER WITH CELL PHONE AND A TOW TRUCK DISPATCHED. GOT IT TO THE LOCAL DEALER. THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT HELP ME BECAUSE THE SERVICE CENTER WAS CLOSED. LUCKILY A MOTEL WAS CLOSE BY. THE NEXT MORNING THE SERVICE CENTER ADVISED THERE MAY BE A BAD FUEL PROBLEM. IT WAS SHELL DIESEL FROM A FAIRLY LARGE CITY STATION. SUPPOSEDLY THE FUEL WAS "MURKY." IF IT WAS FUEL PROBLEM I TOLD VW SERVICE ADVISOR I WANTED A SAMPLE OF THE FUEL SO I COULD RECOUP MY REPAIR EXPENSE FROM SHELL. LATER I WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO METAL SHAVINGS, AND THE PARTS AND LABOR EXPENSE TO DRAIN THE FUEL, PURGE THE LINES, AND REPLACE THE FUEL FILTER WAS NOT CHARGED TO ME PER "GOOD WILL" SERVICE. THEY DID NOT SAVE ANY FUEL FOR ME. I DID INCUR MOTEL AND FOOD EXPENSES AND AM WORRIED VW WILL NOT REIMBURS MY TRIP INTERRUPTION EXPENSES BECAUSE IT IS "BAD FUEL" AND SINCE I HAVE NO FUEL I CANNOT PROVE TO SHELL THE FUEL WAS BAD. ACCORDING TO INVOICE THE CAUSE OF MY PROBLEM WAS A P0087 = FUEL/SYSTEM PRESSURE TOO LOW. SEEMS VW VEHICLES ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM MORE THAN THEY SHOULD AND THE CUSTOMER IS KEPT IN THE DARK. I AM AFRAID THIS PROBLEM WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. *TR

WE ARE DRIVING A LOANER 2013 VW PASSAT THAT WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF PURCHASING. WE DROVE IT FOR THE FIRST TIME AT NIGHT AND ENCOUNTERED A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE HEADLIGHTS. WE EXITED THE HIGHWAY AND WHILE GOING AROUND THE BEND OF THE OFF RAMP I WAS UNABLE TO SEE THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT ALL. AT FIRST I THOUGHT MY VISION BLURRED BUT AS WE EXAMINED IT FURTHER WE LEARNED THAT THERE IS A VERY SERIOUS DARK AREA ON BOTH FRONT CORNERS OF THE CAR. WHEN RE -ENTERED THE HIGHWAY WE ALSO FOUND OURSELVES DISTRACTED BY THE DARK SPOTS EVEN WHILE GOING IN A STRAIT LINE. WE PROCEEDED TO DIM ALL INSTRUMENTATION TO SEE IF THAT WAS ADDING DISTRACTION BUT THE PROBLEM WAS STILL PREVALENT. AS WE DROVE HOME WE REVIEWED THE HEADLIGHT DISPERSION OF OTHER CARS AND ALL OF THEM PROJECTED ADEQUATE LIGHT IN THE FRONT CORNERS OF THE CAR. IF THERE WERE A BICYCLIST OR PERSON WALKING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THERE IS A HIGH PROBABILITY WE WOULD HAVE HIT THEM OR GO OFF INTO A DITCH FROM THE INABILITY TO SEE THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. *TR

THIS CAR HAS AN ISSUE WITH STABILITY ABOVE 65 MPH. (YES THEY ARE INFLATED TO PROPER PRESSURE) I TOOK A 550 MILE TRIP RIGHT AFTER I BOUGHT IT AND THE CAR WAS EXTREMELY UNSTABLE AT 65MPH+ ON ALL SURFACES INCLUDING: SMOOTH CONCRETE, GROOVED CONCRETE, OLD PAVEMENT, BRAND NEW PAVEMENT, PAVEMENT WITH NO TIRE WEAR OR TIRE GROOVES, IN WIND OR NO WIND. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN YOU TRY TO KEEP THE CAR IN A STRAIGHT LINE. IT WILL NOT TRACK STRAIGHT. IT WILL GO LEFT OR RIGHT, BUT NOT STRAIGHT. HAD ALIGNMENT CHECKED AND IT WAS CORRECT. THE CAR ALSO TENDS TO DRIFT TO THE RIGHT A LITTLE NO MATTER IF YOUR ON THE DOWN OR UPSLOPE OF THE CREST ON THE ROAD. IT IS BORDERLINE DANGEROUS BECAUSE IN TRAFFIC I FOUND THE CAR WANTING TO DART TOWARDS THE LEFT AND RIGHT LANE. IF YOU DON'T CONSTANTLY FIGHT THE STEERING EVERY SECOND, YOU WILL HIT A CAR NEXT TO YOU. I HIGHLY SUSPECT IT IS THE 17" HANKOOK TIRES THAT COME ON THE CAR AS MANY HAVE REPORTED THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THESE TIRES AND HAVE HAD ISSUES FROM BEING DANGEROUS IN SNOW AND WATER TO THE WANDERING LEFT AND RIGHT WHEN TRYING TO DRIVE STRAIGHT. SOME HAVE EVEN REPORTED THE SIDEWALLS RUPTURING. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT PUTS ME IN FEAR FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AND I WILL BE REPLACING THE TIRES AS SOON AS I CAN AFFORD IT. HOPEFULLY MORE PEOPLE WILL COMPLAIN HERE INSTEAD OF JUST ON FORUMS. I URGE YOU TO RESEARCH THESE TIRES AND THE VW PASSAT FORUMS AND YOU WILL FIND TONS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESE TIRES. ANOTHER NOTE: I HAVE DRIVEN TRUCKS, FAMILY SEDANS, SPORTS CARS, SUV'S, AUDIS, VW, MERCEDES, BMW, FORD, CHEVY, DODGE, AND I HAVE NEVER FELT THE STEERING REFUSING TO STAY ON THE CENTER LINE UNTIL THIS CAR. *TR

THE HAD RESET SOMETHING AND TOLD ME THEY WOULD CALL ME WHEN THE PART WAS IN THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE. A FEW DAYS LATER THE CAR WAS BACK TO RUNNING WELL. THEN ON AUGUST 25TH THE CAR BASICALLY DIED WHILE IN MOTION WITH A LOSS OF BRAKES AND POWER STEERING. WE HAVE 6600 MILES ON THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE SECOND INCIDENT. TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR AND AS THE ACCELERATOR WAS DEPRESSED THE CAR WOULD STALL AGAIN AND AGAIN. HAD TO DO THIS FOR A MILE OR SO TO GET THE CAR HOME, VERY DANGEROUS, BUT SINCE IT WAS A SUNDAY WE COULDN'T GET A HOLD OF THE DEALER. ON AUGUST 26TH (NEXT MORNING) WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER SHIP AND CURRENTLY AWAITING DIAGNOSIS. MY WIFE AS WELL AS MYSELF ARE NOW WORRIED ABOUT DRIVING THE CAR ANYWHERE AS WE FEEL SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AS WHEN THE CAR STALLS THERE IS NO POWER STEERING OR BRAKES. *TR

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2013 VW PASSAT FROM CRESTMONT VW, POMPTON PLAINS, NJ. THE CAR DROVE EXTREMELY WELL FOR THE FIRST FEW WEEKS. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THERE WERE LOUD BEEPING AND WARNING SOUNDS FROM THE DASHBOARD CONTROL PANEL AND THE CAR STARTED TO LOSE SPEED. UPON VW SUGGESTION, WE TOOK IT TO CRESTMONT SERVICE DEPT. IT APPEARS THERE WAS MOTOR OIL SPEWING ALL OVER THE ENGINE. A WEEK LATER THERE WERE LOUD NOISES EMANATING FROM THE ROOF AREA EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE NEGOTIATED A BUMP IN THE ROAD. ONCE AGAIN CRESTMONT VW SERVICE DEPT. EXAMINED THE CAR AND THEY DETERMINED THE ENTIRE SUNROOF PANEL HAD TO BE DISMANTLED IN ORDER FOR ADDITIONAL INSULATION COULD BE ADDED TO THE ENTIRE ROOF, TO DAMPEN THE SOUNDS DURING NORMAL, CURSORY DRIVING CONDITIONS. BOB GROSS, THE SERVICE DEPT. MANAGER AT CRESTMONT VW HAS LEFT ME A DETAILED VOICEMAIL INFORMING ME THAT HE RECEIVED A TECH BULLETIN FROM VW, NOTIFYING ALL DEALERS THAT THERE WERE PLASTIC SHAVINGS LEFT BEHIND DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS THAT CAUSED THE OIL TANK TO RUPTURE, RESULTING IN MOTOR OIL TO GUSH PROFUSELY, WHICH CAN LEAD THE CAR TO STALL AND POSSIBLY THE ENGINE TO CEASE. I HAVE WRITTEN TO [XXX], GM FOR VW NORTH AMERICA, AND TO [XXX], PRESIDENT AND CEO OF VW NORTH AMERICA. NEITHER OF THEM DENY THE CLAIMS. IT IS CLEARLY EVIDENT THIS VEHICLE NEED ADDITIONAL SCRUTINY TO RECTIFY THE INHERENT FLAWS, SHORTCOMINGS AND INADEQUACIES THAT ARE PREVALENT FROM THE LACK OF OVERSIGHT DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THE SOLE OPERATOR OF THIS VEHICLE IS MY SON WHO RECENTLY TURNED 17. *TR

STEERING: VEHICLE PULLS TO AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT POTENTIALLY LEADING TO INJURY OR DEATH. IT DOES NOT TRACK STRAIGHT AT ALL, NO MATTER IF IT'S ON THE LEFT LANE OF THE ROAD, CENTER CROWN OF THE ROAD OR IN THE RIGHT LANE (NO CURVES. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALERSHIP OVER 4 TIMES THINKING IT MAY BE AN ALIGNMENT PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THE SECOND TIME THAT IT PULLS HARD TO THE RIGHT AS A "SAFETY MEASURE", TO LEAD THE CAR TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER TO GET OFF THE ROAD ON TO THE SHOULDER. ASKED THE SERVICE ADVISOR TO SHOW ME WHERE VW HAD DISCLOSED THIS AS A "SAFETY" MEASURE. THERE WAS NO SUCH DOCUMENTATION. I TOOK IT IN TO ANOTHER VW DEALERSHIP IN MY SAME CITY. THEY DID WHAT THEY SAID WAS THE 'BEST THEY COULD DO WITHOUT EXCEEDING VW'S SPECIFICATIONS. THIS IS A DANGEROUS DEFECT AND THE SECOND DEALERSHIP ADMITTED TO ME THAT VW WAS HAVING SOME PROBLEMS WITH THIS ISSUE. LIGHTS/ELECTRICAL: THE LOW BEAM LIGHT WENT OUT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I TOOK IT TO ONE OF THE DEALERSHIPS IN MY CITY. I THOUGHT IT WENT OUT TOO SOON BUT SUSPECT IT WAS AN ISSUE. IT TURNED OUT TO BE MORE THEN A SIMPLE BURNT OUT BULB. THE WHOLE LIGHT ASSEMBLY HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF WHAT THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME WAS INDEED A PROBLEM VW WAS HAVING WITH THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION MAKING CONTINUOUS CONTACT (LIKE A PLUG & RECEPTACLE). HE STATED THAT THEY HAD CHANGED THE DESIGN IN THE 2014 MODELS BECAUSE OF THIS DEFECT IN THE 2013 MODELS. I REQUESTED THAT SINCE IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE, I WOULD LIKE THEM TO RETROFIT OR CHANGE OUT THE PASSENGER SIDE LIGHT. HE STATED TO ME HE WAS NOT AUTHORIZED TO CHANGE THE DEFECTIVE UNIT UNTIL IT ACTUALLY FAILS. THIS IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS AS IT CAN HAPPEN AT NIGHT WHEN LIGHTS ARE REALLY NEEDED, AND DURING THE DAY IF LIGHTS NEED TO BE ON FOR SAFETY WHERE IT IS REQUIRED ON SOME OF THE MORE DANGEROUS ROADS. GET IT IN WRITING WHAT IS WRONG-NO GLOSSING OVER. *TR

(Volkswagen) launched Safety Recall 15V-483 to address the loss of the protection provided by the front driver air bag in several models due to the failure of the clockspring.Debris entry into the steering wheel hub can result in contamination and ultimately failure of the clockspring in 2010-2014 Model Year (MY) CC, Passat, Eos, Golf, GTI, Tiguan, Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen models.Contamination of the clockspring can cause the ribbon cable to tear resulting in loss of the electrical connection to the front driver air bag and any steering wheel mounted controls. The loss of the electrical connection to the front driver air bag will result in illumination of the air bag warning light and will prevent operation of the front driver air bag in a crash of sufficient severity requiring a commanded deployment. In November 2017, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ17-009) after the agency received 90 complaints alleging failure of the clockspring in the subject models.Several of the complaints allege failure of the clockspring after receiving the recall remedy. The majority of the complaints allege the same failure mode without being included in the original recall, 15V-483.In its March 2018 response to ODI's Information Request under the Recall Query, Volkswagen provided approximately 700 consumer complaints and field reports on the recalled vehicles. These reports allege clockspring failure similar to the NHTSA reports described above. To date, NHTSA has received approximately 154 allegations of clockspring failure since the recall has launched. The total of 852 reports shown in the table above eliminates 6 duplicative reports received by ODI and the manufacturer. An Engineering Analysis has been opened to further evaluate the scope and effectiveness of the remedy associated with 15V-483 and perform a thorough review of the design changes implemented by Volkswagen and its suppliers to address this issue. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.NHTSA.gov under the following ODI identification numbers: 11080741, 11079877, 11079805, 11079124, 11076709, 11076645, 11076297, 11076249, 11076133, 11075756, 11075726, 11075358, 11075259, 11075055, 11074920, 11074565, 11073090, 11072745, 11072457, 11072089, 11071933, 11071880, 11071630, 11071592, 11067396, 11067061, 11066738, 11066601, 11066511, 11065909, 11065871, 11065262, 11064701, 11064564, 11064544, 11064531, 11063961, 11063501, 11063095, 11062772, 11062464, 11062353, 11062344, 11061463, 11061310, 11061311, 11060735, 11058154, 11057519, 11057477, 11057341, 11056793, 11056243, 11056063, 11055639, 11054279, 11052812, 11052678, 11052384, 11052228, 11051336, 11051155, 11051074, 11048803, 11047037, 11044226, 11043653, 11039142, 11033893, 11033330, 11032548, 11025475, 11025356, 11024647, 11023423, 11020570, 11020312, 11019415, 11019067, 11015441, 11015431, 11014595, 11014016, 11013709, 11013415, 11012596, 11011753, 11006668, 11006521, 11006307, 11006181, 11005301, 11003865, 11001780, 11001783, 11001334, 10994184, 10993360, 10993524, 10992490, 10985926, 10983678, 10981220, 10980831, 10980941, 10980549, 10979418, 10971152, 10967344, 10967155, 10959968, 10958624, 10957279, 10956488, 10949129, 10947562, 10945122, 10936498, 10936543, 10933950, 10927311, 10925421, 10924034, 10915612, 10915569, 10911171, 10902066, 10898733, 10896537, 10896510, 10895526, 10893938, 10891686, 10864967, 10863742, 10861984, 10851242, 10822505, 10821562, 10818403, 10795068, 10794402, 10788738, 10787804, 10782544, 10780725, 10780145, 10779145, 10776477, 10775448, 10763492, 10763423, 10763289, 10762670, 10760644, 10758777, 10749901, 10748922

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags; Air Bags:frontal; Electrical System

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened an investigation based on consumer allegations of steering wheel clock spring/steering column control module (SCCM) failures in model year (MY) 2012 Volkswagen Passat and CC models. The SCCM is a module within the steering column that incorporates a spiral conductor (a ribbon cable) to electrically connect the steering wheel to the vehicle's electrical system while allowing for the turning of the steering wheel.Complainants alleged that that the clock spring failed while driving and without warning. When the SCCM fails electrically, an air bag warning light is illuminated on the dash of the vehicle. If a vehicle with a failed SCCM were to be involved in a crash of sufficient severity to require deployment, the driver air bag may not deploy properly, or deploy at all.As the result of an Information Request response from Volkswagen, ODI determined that the same SCCM was used in several vehicle models and MYs including: 2010-2013 CC, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2013 Golf, 2012-2013 Jetta and Jetta SportWagen, 2010 and 2012-2014 Passat and 2011-2014 Tiguan.ODI identified a total of 29 NHTSA complaints across all affected vehicles potentially indicating a failed SCCM.Drivers often indicated that an audible noise was heard from the steering column when the unit failed. Some drivers also mentioned that there was a noticeable but minor resistance to turning of the steering wheel after the failure with noises coming from the steering column. The average failure mileage is approximately 30,500 miles and failures often occur outside of the factory warranty. There were no reported crashes or injuries identified in either the NHTSA or Volkswagen data as a result of SCCM failures. On July 30th, 2015 Volkswagen notified ODI that it would conduct a safety recall (15V-483) to remedy the SCCMs in 415,825 MY2010-2014 vehicles.According to Volkswagen, the SCCM can become contaminated with human hair or similar fibers entering the unit between the steering wheel and steering column.Over time this can cause the electrical cable to tear and lose connection between the steering wheel and vehicle.Volkswagen will install a cover that attaches over the SCCM to help prevent contaminants from entering the unit.A new SCCM designed to reduce outside contamination intrusion was previously introduced into new vehicle production during the 2014 model year; accordingly vehicles equipped with the new design SCCM are not included in the recall. The recall action initiated by the manufacturer addresses the safety risks identified by the investigation.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues under the following identification (ODI) numbers: 10760644, 10758777, 10748922, 110734168, 10731545, 10721424, 10717651, 10715305, 10713742, 10713139, 10712295, 10711945, 10704830, 10704221, 10702926, 10702212, 10701406, 10691906, 10683944, 10682136, 10672715, 10670517, 10669312, 10628549, 10607240, 10575783, 10561143, 10552113, 10397670.
