The contact owns a 2016 Victory Cross Country Tour Motorcycle. The contact stated that while riding approximately 35 MPH, the motorcycle experienced transmission failure, causing the motorcycle to abruptly stop in the middle of the roadway. The motorcycle was inoperable and was later towed to the local service center. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 55,000.

WHILE DOWNSHIFTING, THE SHIFTER LOCKED UP AND WOULD NOT DOWNSHIFT. I PULLED THE CLUTCH LEVER IN AND TRIED TO DOWN SHIFT AGAIN. THE SHIFTER MOVED DOWNWARD BUT THEIR WAS A LOUD BANG THAT SOUNDED LIKE METAL PIECES SHATTERING. I HAD TO PUT MY MOTORCYCLE ON A TRAILER TO GET IT TO THE DEALER. THE SHIFTER MOVED DOWNWARD BUT THEIR WAS A LOUD BANG THAT SOUNDED LIKE METAL PIECES SHATTERING. I HAD TO PUT MY MOTORCYCLE ON A TRAILER TO GET IT TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER DISASSEMBLED THE MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION TO FIND #4 GEAR WAS MISSING TEETH. THEY INFORMED ME THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED BECAUSE THE VICTORY TRANSMISSION USED CONSTANT MESHED GEARS, THE GEARS NEVER SEPERATE AND REMESH.THEY ALSO INFORMED ME THAT I WAS LUCKY THAT THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT LOCK UP CAUSING THE REAR TIRE TO LOCK UP. THIS WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A PROBABLE CRASH. FURTHER INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE RETAINING CLIPS USED TO HOLD THE GEARS IN PLACE HAD BEEN LOOSE FOR AWHILE AND AGAIN WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE THAT IT HAPPENED CLOSE TO HOME AND AT A LOWER SPEED.

Polaris Industries, Inc. (Polaris) is recalling certain 2010-2017 Victory Cross Country, Cross Country Tour, Cross Roads, Magnum, and Hard Ball motorcycles. If the engine misfires, continued riding may result in heat from the catalytic converter melting the rear brake line and nearby wiring.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A melted rear brake line can reduce braking performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Polaris will notify owners, and dealers will re-route the brake line away from the exhaust catalyst, free of charge. The recall began on November 8, 2017. Owners may contact Polaris customer service at 1-877-737-7172. Polaris' number for this recall is V-17-02.
