TWICE WITHIN A WEEK MY GAS PEDAL DID NOT RELEASE, RESULTING IN A CONTINUED ACCELERATION FOR MY 2009 CAMRY HYBRID. FIRST TIME WAS ON AN EXIT RAMP WHERE I RELEASE PRESSURE ON THE PEDAL TO SLOW DOWN BUT IT DID NOT MOVE FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE SECOND TIME WAS PULLING OUT AND NEEDING TO QUICKLY ACCELERATE, I THEN RELEASED PRESSURE, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO INCREASE IN SPEED. BOTH TIMES I MOVE THE FLOOR MAT TOWARD MY SEAT, AND THE SECOND TIME REQUIRED SHIFTING THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL. AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER WHO SOLD IT TO ME AND REPORTED THE ABOVE. THEY LOOKED AT THE MAT AND SECURED IT WITH CLIPS THAT WERE NOT THERE BEFORE. THIS WAS PRIOR TO THE PEDAL RECALLS. *TR

I WAS IN A 35 MILES ZONE, GOING UPHILL AND WELL WITHIN THE LIMIT, BUT WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE CAR DIDN'T REALLY SLOW DOWN ENOUGH TO NOT CRASH INTO THE VEHICLE THAT DIDN'T YIELD AT THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL. I DIDN'T THINK MUCH ABOUT IT THEN, SINCE THE OTHER DRIVER ADMITTED FAULT, BUT IT COULD POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN BECAUSE OF A DEFECT WITH THE CAR'S ACCELERATION. THANKFULLY NO ONE SUSTAINED ANY SIGNIFICANT INJURIES SINCE THE AIRBAGS GOT DEPLOYED IN THE CAMRY. I WOULDN'T HAVE THOUGHT MUCH OF THE INCIDENT, BUT THE NEWS OF THE RECALLS JUST MAKES ME BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE CAR'S ACCELERATION AND NOTHING ELSE. *TR

EVERY WEEK, I USE A COOLER (STANDARD SIZE) FOR GROCERIES AND PUT THE COOLER IN THE TRUNK OF MY CAMRY. WHENEVER I MAKE SHARP TURNS, THE LID OF THE TRUNK WOULD POP OPEN, PROBABLY BECAUSE THE COOLER HITS THE LATCH INSIDE THE TRUNK. I CONSIDER IT QUITE DANGEROUS BECAUSE ITEMS MIGHT FALL OUT OF THE TRUNK IF IT'S OPEN. TO MITIGATE THE PROBLEM, WE PLACE PIECES OF CARDBOARD AROUND THE COOLER TO PREVENT IT FROM SLIDING AROUND. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE HEARD OF THIS AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. WE USE COOLERS ALL THE TIME AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH OTHER VEHICLES. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE. THANK YOU. *TR

SAFETY HAZARD!. 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY (LIKELY ALL HYBRID AUTOMOBILES) WILL CONTINUOUSLY RESTART THE GAS ENGINE TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY IF THE IGNITION SYSTEM IS NOT TURNED OFF WHEN DEPARTING THE VEHICLE. IF THE AUTO IS IN AN ATTACHED GARAGE THIS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL CO POISONING TO OCCUPANTS WITHIN THE DWELLING. I HAVE OBSERVED A HYBRID CONTINUOUSLY RESTARTING WHILE PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY. THIS CAR IS USUALLY KEPT IN AN ATTACHED GARAGE. THE OWNER FORGOT TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION UPON LEAVING THE CAR. THIS IS LIKELY A COMMON EVENT. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY RESULT IN SERIOUSLY INJURY OR DEATH, AND MAY HAVE ALREADY HAPPENED AND NOT BEEN PROPERLY IDENTIFIED AND REPORTED. I HAD REPORTED THIS SAFETY HAZARD TO THE NTSB IN MID-2009 WITH NO SUBSEQUENT NTSB ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OR FOLLOW-UP. *TR

WITH THE MEDIA COVERAGE OF TOYOTA PROBLEMS, I SAW A WOMAN INTERVIEWED WHO COMPLAINED OF "SUDDEN ACCELERATION" WITH HER TOYOTA WHILE BRAKING. I RECOGNIZED THAT IT IS SOMETHING I HAVE EXPERIENCED FREQUENTLY WITH OUR 2009 CAMRY XLE V6 W. 6 SPEED AUTO TRANS. IT IS NOT A "SUDDEN ACCELERATION" PROBLEM, BUT A SUDDEN FREE-WHEELING PROBLEM, MOST NOTICEABLE WHEN DRIVING ON LEVEL OR DOWNHILL ROADS. AS YOU BRAKE TO COME TO A STOP, THE AUTO TRANS. DOWNSHIFTS INTO A LOWER GEAR, BUT IT DOESN'T DO IT FAST ENOUGH, SO IT MOMENTARILY GOES THROUGH NEUTRAL CREATING A MOMENTARY FREE-WHEELING SITUATION THAT DOES ACCELERATE THE CAR JUST AS YOU ARE WANTING TO COME TO A STOP. IT IS PARTICULARLY DISCONCERTING WHEN BRAKING INTO AN INTERSECTION WHILE GOING DOWN HILL. I CALLED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE NUMBER ON 5/21/09 TO REPORT IT, HOPING THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A SOFTWARE UPGRADE. THEY SAID IT WAS NOT NORMAL AND CREATED CASE # 0905126552 AND TOLD ME TO TAKE THE CAR TO MY DEALER, WHICH I DID ON 06/01/09. THE DEALER RESET THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COMPUTER, BUT THAT DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I LATER REPORTED IT AGAIN TO TOYOTA ON A 07/22/09 CUSTOMER SURVEY. WE HAVE BEEN LIVING WITH IT, BUT ARE CAREFUL WHEN BRAKING INTO AN INTERSECTION. *TR

ON 2/01/10 AT APPROXIMATELY 8:00 AM I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA ON THE WASHINGTON DC BELTWAY 495 NORTH FROM VIRGINIA. I WAS NEARING 270 NORTH AND DECIDED I HAD BETTER CHANGE LANES TO STAY ON MY INTENDED ROUTE ON 495. LOOKING IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR I SAW A TRACTOR-TRAILER WAS IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE NEXT TO ME AND I NEEDED SOME RAPID ACCELERATION TO GET AHEAD OF THE TRUCK SO I STAMPED ON THE ACCELERATOR. I STAMPED MUCH HARDER THAN I NORMALLY WOULD DO. IMMEDIATELY MY ACCELERATOR STUCK TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR ACCELERATED FROM APPROXIMATELY 65 TO OVER 85 MILES AN HOUR. I HAD SEEN A TV REPORT ON THE NBC STATION IN DC THAT ADVISED IF YOUR TOYOTA ACCELERATOR STICKS APPLY BOTH FEET TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND HOLD IT. I FORGOT THE HOLD IT PART AND I STARTED TO PUMP THE BRAKE, WHICH HAD NO EFFECT. I ALSO REMEMBERED THAT THE NEXT THING TO TRY WAS PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. THIS I DID AND THE ACCELERATION STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. I WAS ABLE TO COAST THE CAR OFF INTO AN AREA, A TRIANGLE BETWEEN THE RIGHT LANE OF THE BELTWAY AND AN ONCOMING LANE. I THEN TURNED OFF THE CAR AND PHYSICALLY REACHED DOWN AND PULLED THE ACCELERATOR BACK UP. IT "POPPED" UP LIKE A SPRING. I THEN RESTARTED THE CAR AND CONTINUED TO WORK. I REMEMBERED THAT ON LONG TRIP RECENTLY TO ATLANTA THAT ONE OTHER TIME IT FELT LIKE THE ACCELERATOR STUCK, BUT THAT TIME IT WAS MOMENTARY A FEW SECONDS. ON 2/21/10 THE ACCELERATOR STAYED DOWN I AM GUESSING A GOOD 20-30 SECONDS BEFORE I REMEMBERED TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. WHEN I GOT TO WORK I CALLED TOYOTA USA TO REPORT THE PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD ME MY CAR WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL AND THAT I SHOULD CALL A DEALER. I CALLED MY DEALER AND HE TOLD ME THERE WERE NO PARTS AVAILABLE OR EVEN MADE FOR THE CAMRY HYBRID AND THAT HE WOULD JUST HAVE TO REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR ASSEMBLY WITH THE SAME PART. HE SAID THEY HAVEN'T MADE ANY NEW PARTS FOR THE HYBRID. DID NOT SOUND LIKE THEY CARED. *TR

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.

Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 AVALON, MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 CAMRY, MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 COROLLA, COROLLA MATRIX, RAV4, MODEL YEAR 2010 HIGHLANDER, MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 SEQUOIA, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 TUNDRA VEHICLES. DUE TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FRICTION LEVER INTERACTS WITH THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSIDE THE PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE LEVER MAY BECOME SMOOTH DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. IN THIS CONDITION, IF CONDENSATION OCCURS ON THE SURFACE, AS MAY OCCUR FROM HEATER OPERATION (WITHOUT A/C) WHEN THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS COLD, THE FRICTION WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS OPERATED MAY INCREASE, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMING HARDER TO DEPRESS, SLOWER TO RETURN, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY BECOME HARD TO DEPRESS, SLOW TO RETURN TO IDLE, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REINFORCEMENT BAR IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHICH WILL ALLOW THE PEDAL TO OPERATE SMOOTHLY. GM WILL NOTIFY OWNERS FOR THE PONTIAC VIBE PLEASE SEE 10V-018. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2010 AND WILL BE COMPLETED ON MARCH 15, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Oct 5, 2009

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.
