I JUST PURCHASED A 2002 FORD THINK ELECTRIC VEHICLE. THE CLUSTER IN THE DASH SIZZLED AND EMITTED SMOKE, I THINK A SMALL FIRE WAS STARTED AND WENT OUT ON IT'S OWN. THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND COULD NOT BE MOVED UNDER IT'S OWN POWER. WHEN I STARTED CHECKING ONLINE, I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND OUT THAT THIS IS EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM. I AM CERTAINLY NO SAFETY EXPERT, BUT IT WOULD SEEM TO ME THAT HAVING A COMPONENT BURN UP IN THE DASH, SIZZLING AND SMOKING THAT CAUSES A SUDDEN LOSS OF ELECTRICAL AND DRIVE POWER WOULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. AGAIN, THIS IS EXTREMELY COMMON FOR THE FORD THINK AND IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL SOMEONE GETS HURT. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A NEW REVISED CLUSTER FROM FORD, BUT IT TOO HAS THE VERY SAME PROBLEM. *TR
ON CERTAIN ELECTRIC VEHICLES, THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER PUSHROD, WHICH CONNECTS THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE MASTER CYLINDER, COULD FRACTURE.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: FRACTURE OF THE PUSHROD WOULD RESULT IN THE LOSS OF THE SERVICE BRAKES. DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER PUSHROD.
Remedy: DEALERS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED TO STOP SALE OF THESE VEHICLES UNTIL THE PUSHROD HAS BEEN REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 22, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.
