I WAS TRAVELING ALONG I-25 ABOUT 75-80 MPH WHEN THE STEERING GOT EXTREMELY TIGHT SO I STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AND WHEN I DID SO I FOUND OUT THERE WAS LITTLE TO NO BRAKES. ONCE I COASTED TO THE EDGE OF THE INTERSTATE THE TRUCK STARTED TO OVERHEAT REALLY FAST SO I SHUT IT OFF. I OPENED THE HOOD AND EXAMINED THE MOTOR AND FOUND THAT THE WATER PUMP SHAFT HAD SNAPPED OFF BECAUSE THE WATER PUMP FAILED. WHEN IT HAPPENED MY TRUCK LOST EVERYTHING THAT IS TURNED OFF OF THE SERPINTINE BELT WHICH INCLUDES POWER STEERING PUMP ALL HYDRAULIC SYSTEM FOR MY MASTER CYLINDER AND COOLING SYSTEM. THERE WAS NO WARNING THAT THE PUMP WAS GOING TO FAIL AND AT 75 MPH IT WAS AMAZING THAT NOTHING CATASTROPHIC HAPPENED WITH NO STEERING OR BRAKES. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE WATER PUMP ON MY TRUCK BUT IT DOESNT MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT IT FAILING LIKE MINE DID WITH 40,000 MILES ON IT.

THIS HAS HAPPENED 10-15 TIMES DURING THE 3+YEARS I'VE OWNED IT BUT THIS INCIDENT ALMOST CAUSED A CRASH BECAUSE LETTING OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND THEN GETTING BACK ON IT CAUSE ME TO CONTINUE SLOW EVEN THOUGH I MASHED THE GAS PEDAL. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING VERY WRONG WITH THE SOFTWARE OR CONTROLLER THAT INTERACTS BETWEEN MY DRIVE BY WIRE THROTTLE AND THE ENGINE/ECU.

HOWEVER, THE CONSUMER STATED THE WORST EXPERIENCE WAS WHEN THE TRUCK WAS FACING UP HILL ON A SLIGHT GRADE AND THE GEAR SELECTOR WAS IN DRIVE. WITH A LIGHT THROTTLE, THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACKWARDS AND THE BRAKES HAD TO BE APPLIED. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO ANY SPEED, EXCEPT IN FIRST GEAR WITH OR WITHOUT THE EXHAUST BRAKE ON, WHEN THE ENGINE RPM DROPPED TO 900-1000 RPM THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND NOT THE NEXT LOWER GEAR. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE FREE WHEELED ESPECIALLY PICKING UP SPEED GOING DOWN HILL. *JB UPDATED 12/13/2017 *LN UPDATED 7/12/18*JB *TR

HAVE BEEN INFORMED NOW BY RAM SERVICE DEALERSHIPS THAT THE VEHICLE IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE SEEPAGE OF FLUIDS FROM ENGINE SEALS AND ARE NOT AN ISSUE UNLESS THE FLUID IS POURING OUT ON THE GROUND AND COVERING THE VEHICLE. I CURRENTLY USE THE VEHICLE TO TRAVEL TO PUBLIC AND PRIVATE CAMPGROUND INVOLVING SENSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL AREAS. AS EXPLAINED, THE VEHICLE IS NOW BANNED FROM BEING OPERATED IN THOSE AREAS DUE TO DESIGNED LEAKING OF FLUIDS FROM THE VEHICLE. RAM CUSTOMER DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN ADVISED AND AM AWAITING A RESPONSE.

FROM A STOP, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY. WHEN DEPRESSING THE GAS PEDAL IT TAKES A FEW SECONDS FOR THE VEHICLE TO RESPOND. WHEN LETTING OFF THE GAS, THE THROTTLE DOES NOT RESPOND FOR ABOUT TWO SECONDS. THERE IS A SEVERE RESPONSE IN THE THROTTLE FROM WHEN DEPRESSING THE GAS PEDAL TO WHEN THE VEHICLE ACTUALLY STARTS TO MOVE. THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO SWITCH LANES OR ACCELERATE AND IT JUST SITS THERE FOR A FEW SECONDS. THIS IS GOING TO KILL PEOPLE ESPECIALLY ONES UNFAMILIAR WITH DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY. THIS SAME PROBLEM EXISTS IN ALL RAM 2500 AND 3500 WITH THE TURBO DIESEL MOTOR FROM YEARS 2011-2016. AS I HAVE DRIVEN THE VEHICLE FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS IT HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY WORSE. THE DELAY IN THROTTLE RESPONSE HAS GOTTEN LONGER.

2013 RAM 2500 - ON JUNE 1, 2016 I WAS PLACING CAR SEATS INTO THE TRUCK. THE KEYS WERE IN MY POCKET AND NOT RUNNING. MY 3 YEAR SON WAS SITTING IN THE FRONT SEAT WHILE I SECURED THE CAR SEATS. MY SON GRABBED THE GEAR SHIFTER AND THE TRUCK WENT INTO GEAR ROLLING DOWN A 25' EMBANKMENT AND STRIKING A TREE AT THE BOTTOM. UPON A POST ACCIDENT INSPECTION, I FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD SHIFTING INTO AND OUT OF PARK WITH NO KEY IN THE IGNITION AND WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE BRAKE. THE INCIDENT WAS REPORTED TO MY LOCAL DODGE DEALER AS THEY HAD CONDUCTED 2 SAFETY RECALLS IN THE WEEKS PREVIOUS, ONE OF WHICH INVOLVED WIRING IN THE STEERING COLUMN. I WAS INFORMED BY THE LOCAL DEALER THAT THE SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM THAT IS DESIGNED TO KEEP A VEHICLE FROM GOING INTO GEAR WITHOUT THE BRAKE DEPRESSED HAD FAILED AND THAT THE RECALLS THEY HAD CONDUCTED DID NOT INVOLVE THE SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM. I WAS ADVISED BY THE LOCAL DEALER TO CONTACT FIAT CHRYSLER (FCA). FCA SENT OUT A SAFETY INSPECTOR TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. ON 6-7-2016 MARIA PADEA WITH A 3RD PARTY INSPECTION FIRM HIRED BY FCA INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AT MY LOCAL DODGE DEALER. I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO BE PRESENT DURING THE INSPECTION. ON JUNE 15, 2016 I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FCA STATING "..WE ARE NOT LEAD TO BELIEVE THAT THE INCIDENT WAS DUE TO A MANUFACTURING RESPONSIBILITY" AND "...THEREFORE WE MUST RESPECTFULLY DECLINE ANY ASSISTANCE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS INCIDENT. UPON RECEIVING THE LETTER, I CONTACTED FCA AND REQUESTED A COPY OF THE INSPECTION REPORT. I RECEIVED AN EMAIL ON 07-11-2016 STATING "THE INSPECTION REPORT AND DOCUMENTATION YOU HAVE REQUESTED ARE CONFIDENTIAL AND PROPRIETARY. AS SUCH, WE ARE UNABLE TO PROVIDE THEM. SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT OUR HANDLING, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO ENGAGE YOUR OWN INVESTIGATOR TO LOOK INTO THE MATTER. THE INCIDENT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO MY INSURANCE CARRIER.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks equipped with an 8 foot bed and a power locking tailgate. Chrysler is also recalling all 2013-2014 and 2018 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks built before April 1, 2018 with a 6 or 8 foot bed and a power locking tailgate. On August 29, 2019 Chrysler expanded the recall to include an additional 693,128 model year 2013-2014 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks. The tailgate actuator limiter tab may fracture and cause the tailgate to unlatch and open while driving.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the tailgate opens while the vehicle is being driven, cargo may fall out the vehicle and create a road hazard, increasing the risk of crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will repair the tailgate latch, free of charge. The recall began May 23, 2019. Chrysler is expected to notify owners of the expanded population on October 18, 2019. Owners may contact FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US's number for this recall is V44. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. PE18016 · Steering Loss Due To Linkage Separation
Opened Dec 17, 2018 · Closed Dec 12, 2019
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering:linkages:drag:link:connection
On December 17, 2018, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE) 18-016 to investigate the steering system on model year (MY) 2015 and 2016 Ram 2500 manufactured by FCA US, LLC (FCA). Four complaints were received alleging separation of the drag link, a steering linkage that connects between the right front steering knuckle and the pitman arm on the steering box output shaft. The failures were found to be at a threaded coupler within the drag link used for adjusting the length of the linkage during routine maintenance (alignment) of the steering system.Once separation occurs, turning the steering wheel has no effect, and there is no way for the driver to control or maintain the direction of the vehicle. During the investigation, it was determined that the same threaded coupler was used on two different drag link designs FCA manufactured on MY 2013-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. FCA refers to the designs as either 4x2 or 4x4 style. In both designs, the coupler is prevented from turning on the drag link via two jam nuts that are tightened against the coupler. In its response to NHTSA's March 15, 2019, Information Request (IR) letter, FCA identified 48 incidents alleging separation of the steering linkage at the coupler resulting in a loss of steering control. Of those, 13 involved a crash, one of which resulted in an injury. All of the separations involved the 4x4 style drag link. Additionally, FCA's IR response refers to over 300 4x4 style equipped vehicles that experienced, or may have experienced loosening of one or more coupler jam nuts. On January 25, 2019, FCA submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) initiating NHTSA Recall No. 19V-021. In its DIR, FCA stated that the outboard jam nut in certain MY 2013-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 could loosen potentially resulting in damage to the coupler and/or drag link threading allowing one end of the drag link to separate. The DIR notes that drag link separation results in loss of steering control, which in turn can cause a crash without warning. FCA's DIR did not identify a root cause for the defect, however it posits that an improperly torqued outboard jam nut could loosen, and with long-term vehicle use, cause damage to the outer link bar and/or coupler threads due to relative motion between the two components. The scope of Recall 19V-021 included vehicles with the 4x4 style drag link only. Also discussed in its IR response, FCA noted that the 4x2 style drag link contains a design difference (the outboard portion of the drag link is straight while the 4x4 style contains a bend) which it suggests may result in differences in the mechanical (bending) loads presented at the coupler and jam nut interface. Moreover, the DIR states that While root cause of the 4x4 style defect has not been established, FCA US believes that bending loads on the drag link is, at least, a causal contributing factor. FCA notes it did not identify any reports alleging 4x2 style separation as well as only three reports of loosening of jam nuts, two of which resulted in loosening that provided obvious warning to the vehicle operator, indicating a different failure mode.NHTSA is upgrading this investigation to Engineering Analysis (EA) 19-004 in order to continue to monitor the subject 4x2 style vehicles for evidence of field failures. Additionally, in conjunction with NHTSA's Vehicle Research and Test Center, ODI intends to more thoroughly study potential root cause(s) of the 4x4 style defect mechanism, and if identified, will seek to determine if the 4x2 drag link is susceptible to the same mechanism(s). NHTSA will also evaluate the long-term suitability of the recall
RQ15004 · Software Security Vulnerability
Opened Jul 24, 2015 · Closed Jan 5, 2016
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Electrical System:software
On July 23, 2015, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) launched Safety Recall 15V-461 to remedy security vulnerabilities in approximately 1.4 million model year (MY) 2013 through 2015 vehicles equipped with Uconnect head units (HU) 8.4A (RA3 radio) and 8.4AN (RA4 radio) manufactured by Harman International. On July 24, 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query, RQ 15-004, to investigate HU security vulnerabilities and remedy effectiveness in the recalled population and to determine whether similar units have been supplied for use in other FCA vehicles. In an August 11, 2015 letter, FCA submitted a second Part 573 safety recall report expanding the scope of the Uconnect RA4 model radio to include additional 7,810 MY 2015 Jeep Renegade vehicles manufactured from September 18, 2014 through June 25, 2015 (Recall 15V-508).Scope analysis indicated that Uconnect radios installed in FCA vehicles not included in recalls 15V-461 or 15V-508 (subject recalls) are not equipped with built-in cellular access or short range wireless communication features and, thus, do not contain the security vulnerabilities addressed by the subject recalls. SUBJECT VEHICLES: MY2014 through 2015 Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicles; MY2013 through 2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500/5500 pickup trucks; MY2013 through 2015 Dodge Viper vehicles; and MY2015 Chrysler 200, 300, Jeep Renegade, Dodge Charger and Challenger vehicles.According to FCA, long and short range wireless vulnerabilities identified in the recalled vehicles could allow unauthorized third-party access to, and manipulation of, networked vehicle control systems.Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities, coupled with reverse engineering of networked microprocessor control modules, could result in unauthorized manipulation of vehicle control systems. This unauthorized manipulation of vehicle controls and systems could expose the driver, vehicle occupants or other highway users to an increased risk of injury.FCA and its network provider, Sprint, conducted a nationwide campaign to block access to a radio communications port that was unintentionally left open.On July 27, 2015, short range wireless vulnerabilities were also blocked. Finally, third party security evaluation and regression testing identified vulnerabilities that were either remedied by Sprint or through updates to the FCA Uconnect software.ODI identified a total of 30 complaints or field reports on unique vehicles submitted by FCA (29) or received by NHTSA (1) alleging incidents of theft from a vehicle or anomalous performance that the owner alleged were caused by, or may have been caused by, remote hacking.Twenty-six (87%) of these reports were submitted after a magazine article was published on July 21, 2015, describing the remote hacking of an FCA vehicle by researchers who were able to affect the operation of various vehicle control systems, including the service brakes, steering, throttle and ignition. Most of the complaints involved vehicle systems that were not safety critical (e.g., complaints related to radio, navigation system, or air-conditioning control) and did not affect vehicle control.Three complaints reported engine stalls. One owner reported sudden unintended acceleration allegedly related to hacking.None of the complaints or field reports reviewed involved the steering and braking vehicle control effects demonstrated by the research hackers prior to the recall. There were no confirmed incidents of hacking in any of the records reviewed by ODI.The remedies completed by Sprint and FCA appear to have eliminated vulnerabilities that mi
