THERE HAS BEEN A SNAPPING/POPPING NOISE IN THE STEERING WHEEL/COLUMN SINCE NEW WHEN YOU TURN THE STEERING WHEEL FROM SIDE TO SIDE, SITTING STILL OR DRIVING. THE STEERING FEELS VERY UNSTABLE. RECENTLY THE VEHICLE STARTED CONSTANTLY PULLING TO THE RIGHT. IF I LET OFF THE STEERING WHEEL IT WILL DRIVE OFF THE ROAD. THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES BACK AND FORTH AND THE STEERING FEELS LOOSE AND BUMPY. THE ENTIRE STEERING SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FROM THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE WHEELS. THIS STEERING IS ELECTRIC. THE PARTS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE. THE RACK AND PINION IS ALSO MAKING NOISE AND BUMPY, NEEDS REPLACEMENT. THE WHEELS APPEAR OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND THE TIRES APPEAR TO BE WEARING ON THE OUTSIDE EDGES. THIS IS BASICALLY A BRAND NEW VEHICLE. IT HAS BEEN KEPT IN A GARAGE IN FLORIDA. NO RUST. LOOKS AND DRIVES NEW. EXCEPT FOR THE ELECTRIC STEERING SYSTEM. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. INTERNET SEARCH AND DEALER PHONE CALL CONFIRMED THAT. GM HAS SEVERAL RECALLS AND EXTENDED WARRANTIES FOR THIS, BUT MY CAR DOES NOT QUALIFY. THE STEERING SYSTEM IS MAINTENANCE FREE. THERE IS NOTHING THE CUSTOMER CAN DO. THE STEERING COLUMN SENSOR RING IS DEFECTIVE ALSO. THE UPPER STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ALSO. THIS COULD COST WELL OVER A $1500 JUST FOR PARTS. THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATED AS OFF, CAUSING THE CAR TO JERK AND SLOW AND BE DIFFICULT TO HANDLE, THIS WAS INTERMITTENT FOR 1 WEEK, THEN THE ABS, AIRBAG AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS WOULD RANDOMLY COME ON AND OFF, IN ANY ORDER, ONE OR TWO AT A TIME, THEN OFF THEN ANOTHER ONE OFF AND ON. I HAD A RECALL DONE ON THE BCM ISSUE LAST DECEMBER, YET WAS TOLD THIS WAS A SEPARATE ISSUE WITH THE OIL CONTROL CELENOID MODULE AND VERY COMMON IN THESE VEHICLES, WHICH I AM NOW PAYING TO REPAIR. REGARDING THE HEAD LAMPS THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, THE BULBS WOULD RANDOMLY GO OFF AND COME BACK ON ON EITHER SIDE, I WOULD CHANGE THE BULB AND IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. TODAY I DISCOVERED THIS WAS A "SERVICE BULLETIN" AND AM HAVING IT REPAIRED. HOWEVER, SINCE GM RECOGNIZES THIS IS A PROBLEM AND, HAS MADE NEW PART FOR THE ISSUE, I FEEL THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES COULD HAVE COMPROMISED MY SAFETY AT ANY TIME, WHICH IS WHY I FEEL THEY SHOULD BE REPORTED.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The recall began February 24, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the ‘PARK’ position, the transmission may not be in ‘PARK.’ If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, 'OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION.' THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEATS IN THESE VEHICLES ARE BUILT WITH A PASSENGER AIR BAG SENSING SYSTEM. WHEN TESTED WITH A REPRESENTATIVE, UNRESTRAINED SIX YEAR OLD CHILD, THE SYSTEM IS REQUIRED TO TURN OFF THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER'S AIRBAG. INTERFERENCE DURING SYSTEM CALIBRATION CAUSED THE SEATS TO BE OUT OF SPECIFICATION.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO A CHILD SEAT OCCUPANT DURING CERTAIN CRASH CONDITIONS.

Of these crash allegations, 2 were roll-away incidents, in which the shift interlock was moved out of PARK without pedal application and the vehicle rolled into another object.Three (3) crashes involved rear-end hits, which were believed to be due to brake light reversal.ESC/Traction Control failures were the alleged cause of 2 incidents, which resulted in unresponsive brake application and in 1 case caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.One (1) crash allegation was not counted as the circumstances of the crash were not related to any of the failure modes.ODI notes that it is difficult to determine the actual cause of incidents where brake light reversal or ESC/Traction Control failures were the alleged cause.In response to ODI's IR, GM submitted 2,268 unique reports that related to brake lamp malfunction. Combined with the data submitted during Recall Query 13-001, a total of 4,664 unique complaints were submitted.Twelve (12) of the GM reports alleged a crash, with 2 reporting minor injuries and 4 alleging property damage.Of the 12 reports, 3 involved brake light reversal allegations, 4 involved roll-away incidents and 2 involved ESC/Traction Control malfunctions. ODI did not include three (3) reports that involved allegations inconsistent with the alleged defect.
