I am filing this complaint regarding Nissan's handling of an open safety recall involving my vehicle and the subsequent engine failure. Nissan issued Recall 26V080 concerning an engine-related defect that can cause engine oil breakdown, bearing damage/seizure, engine damage, and loss of motive power. My vehicle developed the red oil warning light, check-engine light, and reduced engine power before the engine failed. The vehicle also had dark oil and sludge in the engine. The dealership is now attributing the engine failure to alleged lack of maintenance and has denied the engine warranty claim. This is disputed. The vehicle received oil changes at an independent repair facility, and I provided Nissan with receipts documenting the maintenance. The dealership originally relied on the absence of Carfax entries to claim that the oil changes had not occurred. The dealership inspected the vehicle and submitted photographs and a physical sludge sample to Nissan's warranty department. I was told that Nissan's warranty department responded approximately three days later. No Nissan warranty technician or field representative physically inspected my vehicle before the determination was made. Nissan Consumer Affairs told me that the dealership's warranty department made the determination and that they would not disclose what information was submitted or what the sludge sample established. I dispute the conclusion that maintenance caused the engine failure. The presence of sludge does not, by itself, establish what caused the sludge. Nissan's own recall documentation identifies oil breakdown as part of the defect's failure mechanism. I have not been provided with evidence explaining how Nissan distinguished maintenance-related oil degradation from the recalled defect or how it ruled out the recalled defect as a cause or contributing factor. I was also told that the recall cannot be performed because my engine is no longer operational and that I would have to obtain another

I was not able to stop so I reduced my speed from 55 to 40 and proceeded to finish the drive an additional 12 miles. I parked the vehicle and called for an appt at Nissan. I took the car in for service and when I got there I showed them the pic of what the dashboard was reading. I later received a text that no warning lights came on when the service tech attempted to drive it to make his report. I was recommended to pick up the vehicle and if it happened again to return. I cannot and will not drive this vehicle. I have only been driving the car for 7 months and this is the second issue I have had with it. I do not feel safe or comfortable driving it.

On 6/22/2026, my vehicle was towed due to loss of power, excessive oil consumption, and excessive vibration, and unable to start. These issues have been ongoing since October 2025. Nissan dealership informed me that I needed a new throttle body and an oil change. Against my better judgement, I paid $1374.02 to replace the part. Two weeks later, My engine started making knocking noises, excessive vibration and completely shut down. Subsequently, I discovered that there is a recall for my vehicle directly related to engine oil bearing failure(NHTSA 26V080, AND Throttle body(NHTSA 26V081). This is an unresolved recall issue and this is both frustrating and disturbing because the manufacture is trying to use delay tactics and avoiding my free repair. This dealer improperly denies a legitimate safety recall when they are required to inspect parts, update software and replace damaged parts at no cost to me. I was told since my warranty has expired, it will not be covered. To say I am baffled, is an understatement. This has nothing to do with my warranty expiration, rather everything to do with over 642,000 U.S. SUV(model years 2023-2025) Nissan Rogue safety campaign. My vehicle is a 2023 and I am asking for some assistance with enforcing the company to honor this recall. In the end, these franchise dealerships want to save money but had no problem taking my money when the vehicle was purchased. More disturbing, my vehicle neither has not been torn down nor any diagnostic code been confirmed. After asking why, I was told that the engine is locked up and it will not show. Please assist me with my refund to out of pocket expense with throttle body and a new engine asap. Thanks.

I noticed a sputtering and loss of power while driving. Approximately 3 miles into the drive, the check engine light and see owner’s manual warning popped up on the dash. I noticed the engine temperature was really high, and I noticed a dramatic loss of power. I turned on my hazards and I pulled into auto zone which was along the route. I put coolant into it and the engine began struggling to even start. I got it started and attempted to drive the remaining mile to the dealership. I wasn’t able to get enough power to enter traffic safely. I reversed by putting it in neutral. I then called a tow truck and had it towed to the dealership.

The contact's mother owns a 2023 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle lost power with the message "Engine Malfunction - Power Reduced" displayed. The vehicle went into LIMP Mode and was towed to the dealer. The dealer initially replaced the water pump under warranty; however, several months later, the failure reoccurred, and the vehicle was towed back to the dealer, and the mass airflow sensor code was retrieved. The contact declined to pay the estimate provided by the dealer and sought a second opinion from an independent mechanic. The independent mechanic retrieved codes associated with the throttle body, knock sensor, and mass airflow sensor. The mechanic replaced the mass airflow sensor and the throttle body, but the failure persisted. Additional tests indicated an Engine Control Module failure, which the mechanic associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V437000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer acknowledged the report but refused to provide additional assistance because the vehicle had previously been repaired under the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

PE24020 · 2021 Nissan Rogue Inner Tie Rod Failures

Opened Aug 5, 2024 · Closed Aug 24, 2026

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering:linkages:tie Rod Assembly

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to assess allegations of tie rod bending, deformation, or related steering linkage damage in certain 2021 Nissan Rogue vehicles. A bent tie rod can affect wheel alignment and steering geometry, and in some circumstances may result in steering pull, abnormal tire wear, reduced steering precision, difficulty maintaining directional control, or loss of vehicle steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs), Early Warning Reporting data, manufacturer field reports, warranty claims, consumer complaints submitted to the manufacturer, and other information provided by Nissan in response to ODI’s information request. ODI also evaluated the reported failure circumstances, vehicle age and mileage, incident severity, and whether the available evidence indicated a defect trend occurring in the absence of external impact or other non-defect causes. Based on the information reviewed, ODI identified a low number of tie rod bending or deformation allegations relative to the subject vehicle population and exposure. The available reports did not indicate a consistent failure pattern, common production period, common mileage, or repeatable failure mode suggestive of a safety-related defect. Many of the reviewed incidents involved circumstances consistent with external loading or impact-related damage, including pothole strikes, curb contact, road debris impacts, prior collision damage, or other abnormal steering/suspension loads. ODI’s analysis did not identify a trend of tie rod bending occurring during normal vehicle operation without evidence of external influence. The complaint and warranty rates were low, and ODI did not identify a pattern of crashes, injuries, or loss-of-control events attributable to a tie rod defect in the subject vehicles. Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by new circumstances or additional information. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

PE23023 · Complete Loss Of Motive Power Due To Engine Failure

Opened Dec 13, 2023 · Closed Jul 18, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:hard Parts Internal/mechanical

On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure.  The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash.  Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the alleged defect.  When combining ODI and manufacturer report data, there are 1,878 unique VINs that have experienced failures across all subject vehicles.  In one of the early warning reports, ODI identified an incident involving a 2022 Infiniti QX55 that resulted in an engine fire following an alleged engine failure. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 was not included in the scope of this investigation but the vehicle model shares the same 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engine.  Based on the information included with the early warning report, the fire can be directly related to the alleged defect.   A further review of ODI and manufacturer data, identified 12 allegations of engine compartment fires in subject vehicles; three were confirmed as directly related to the engine failure, and nine reports described an under-hood fire that occurred following a loss of power event. Additionally, ODI identified multiple reports describing an engine block crack or hole surrounded by oil residue following an engine failure. On June 27, 2025, Nissan submitted recall 25V-437 involving 443,899 MY 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles. The recall remedy provides the dealer instructions to inspect the engine oil pan for the presence of specific metal debris. For customers with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM). For customers with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. In the case where specific debris is detected and confirmed by Nissan Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine. In addition, Nissan will extend the vehicle warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for the recall subject vehicle population after the dealer performs the inspection. Nissan has implemented multiple corrective actions to address the identified manufacturing defects of certain engine block internal components.  In view of the recall action (25V437) taken by Nissan, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Engine
