On June 12, 2026, while driving my 2022 Nissan Rogue on the Grand Central Expressway in New York, the engine suddenly shut down and the vehicle lost motive power in active highway traffic. The vehicle would not restart. I called 911, and police responded and protected the disabled vehicle until it could be towed to safety. I later learned the vehicle was subject to Nissan Safety Recall R25D1 / NHTSA 25V-437 involving engine bearing defects that may cause engine damage and loss of motive power. A Nissan dealer inspected the vehicle and documented that the engine would not turn over. The technician removed the oil pan, found metal debris, and determined the engine was seized. Nissan subsequently replaced the engine and turbocharger. After the replacement, I began experiencing additional problems. The vehicle hesitated during acceleration. On August 15, the Check Engine light illuminated with an “Engine Malfunction” warning. The dealer subsequently replaced an exhaust-related sensor. On August 23, the SRS/Air Bag warning light illuminated and remained on before later turning off. The same SRS warning occurred again on August 24, and the vehicle also failed to start on the first attempt. On August 26, another warning appeared stating “Malfunction – See Owner’s Manual.” Nissan Consumer Affairs advised me that these subsequent problems are unrelated to the engine recall. I am concerned about the continuing safety and reliability problems occurring shortly after the engine and turbo replacement and am requesting that NHTSA document and evaluate these incidents for a potential safety defect.

I was driving on the interstate going 70-80 mph and my car would not accelerate and I got a bunch of yellow error codes. I pulled over and shut it off and restarted. I drove it straight to the nearest Nissan dealership. In that time driving to the dealership my car barely would go over 60 mph and the RPM's would go high then low. The dealership looked it over later in the day and called me and said that 'nothing is wrong with it.' No error codes. No problems. They drove it 30 miles. I am not satisfied with this. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY issue and I am scared to drive again knowing I may not be able to accelerate on the interstate. I took a picture of my dashboard and errors that showed when I was pulled over and I gave this to the dealership. They still said nothing was wrong. I got a second CVT error that I do not have a picture of that one. I opened a case with Nissan directly. I am waiting to hear back from them. (Filed case on XXX case # XXX- [XXX], CS representative). I will have additional files to share once I pick up my car but right now I am scared to drive it. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

UNKNOWN: ASSESSMENT - On April 2nd early morning around 5 am, I left Kaaawa, HI zip code 96730 and headed to Kaneohe, zip code 96744. When I left home the temperature was around 67degree F and there was a light rain. About 15 minutes later at the Hygenic Store, the temperature dropped to around 64. The front windshield began to fog; I turned on the window defrost vent set at 70degree. I heard a lot pop/crack coming from the passenger side, lower frame area of the windshield. When I glanced, I did not see anything at the time. When this happened, there were no other cars in front of me. Later at home, I checked again, did not see anything. Two days later, I got into the car and there was a crack from the lower frame moving up the glass about 7 inches. As the days went by the crack got longer. I did not see a point of impact. As far as I could tell, the crack started from the frame. Unfortunately, I did not take any photos. I contacted Patrick at windward nissan dealership parts department directly (his personal cell phone); he told me to utilize Ace auto glass. There was no inspection by dealership or insurance. Utilized Safelite for replacement. There was no warning of any failure by cars system.

I am reporting a safety defect involving my 2022 Nissan Rogue related to NHTSA Recall 25V437 (engine bearing failure). Prior to complete engine failure, I experienced multiple instances of sudden loss of power while driving at highway speeds, creating a serious safety hazard. In one instance, this nearly resulted in a multi-vehicle accident in heavy traffic. The vehicle also exhibited additional symptoms consistent with the recall, including engine shaking, knocking noises, rough riding and hard shifting, burning smell, and warning lights. Nissan performed the recall service, which consisted of reprogramming the Engine Control Module (ECM). However, this software update did not repair or replace the defective engine components. The vehicle’s condition worsened after the recall service. The engine ultimately failed completely at approximately 122,000 miles, shortly after the recall repair was completed. This indicates that the recall remedy is ineffective and does not adequately address the safety risk, as a software update cannot prevent or correct pre-existing mechanical failure of engine bearings. I am concerned that other vehicles with this defect remain at risk of sudden power loss and potential crashes despite having the recall performed.

Incident Summary: On February 14, 2026, at an automatic conveyor car wash, my Nissan vehicle would not shift into neutral while in motion on the conveyor belt. It stayed in drive/reverse, creating a hazard as it could resist conveyor movement or cause unintended acceleration/reverse. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Transmission shifter/gear selection system (likely electronic shift-by-wire or CVT controls) prevented shift to neutral while vehicle was in low-speed motion. This seems due to a software safety interlock blocking neutral during movement, similar to reported Nissan issues (e.g., Rogue/Pathfinder/Ariya models requiring hold procedures or "neutral hold mode"). Vehicle available for inspection and in my possession, Knoxville TN). How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Inability to shift to neutral prevented free rolling on conveyor, risking resistance, jerky movement, hopping off track, collision with mechanism/other vehicles, or rear-end incidents. Hazard to me (driver) and car wash attendants/customers. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? UNKNOWN — Incident today; not yet diagnosed/reproduced at dealer. Similar owner complaints noted in forums (difficulty shifting to neutral at car washes due to safety features). Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? UNKNOWN — No inspections yet by Nissan, police (no crash), insurance, or others. No damage occurred. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps, messages, noises, or symptoms prior. Shifter worked normally idle (shifted to neutral after initial exit), but failed again in motion—likely motion-related interlock.

I HAVE EXPERIENCED UNUSUAL ENGINE NOISES, ROUGH ENGINE PERFORMANCE, ILLUMINATION OF THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL), AND WARNING MESSAGES DISPLAYED IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THE ENGINE HAS FAILED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, RESULTING IN A LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER TWICE, ONCE ON THE HIGHWAY. I have been to the dealership mechanic 3 times with this issue, the first occurred prior to the recall coming out. The Last time I was told to pay for a diagnostic or they would not be able to help me; I paid and was told they could not find anything relevant to my issue. I was just told that there was no further information occurring from this recall. I feel as if the car is almost undrivable. It is definitely unsafe and unreliable. And a car constantly revs at 6000 RPM's prior to switching gears if it switches gears. At this point I don't know what to do and regret buying a Nissan as they won't even help.

While driving, multiple warning lights appeared on the dashboard, including the check engine light, malfunction indicator, and crash sensor warnings. A message then displayed: “ENGINE MALFUNCTION POWER REDUCED SERVICE NOW.” The engine began making loud knocking noises, lost power, and the vehicle entered reduced-power mode. The issue appears to be related to the ongoing engine bearing failure recall (R25A8 / 25V-437) affecting Nissan vehicles with VC-Turbo engines. Because of these symptoms and the risk of complete engine failure or loss of motive power, the vehicle became unsafe to drive and was parked. The problem poses a serious safety risk, as the loss of power occurred suddenly while the vehicle was in motion, which could cause an accident if it happens in traffic. The problem has not yet been repaired because the manufacturer has not released the full recall remedy. I called the Nissan Dealership in Greeneville TN, at 8:53 AM EST on 11/08/2025 the vehicle is currently parked at my residence. I was advised by the dealership to call back on Monday morning to schedule an inspection at a Nissan dealership. Warning lights and the “Engine Malfunction Power Reduced” message first appeared shortly before the loud knocking began and power loss occurred on the vehicle.

I took my Rogue to the dealership at City Limits Nissan on Monday 10/6/25 as it had power issues and the engine light came on stating 'Engine Malfunction Power reduce Service now' I then called NHTSA and filed a complaint about a recall for my Nissan Rogue that Nissan has yet to have a remedy. I got the car back on Tuesday afternoon 10/7/25 and they said it did not have to do with the recall. I drove the car straight home. I went to work the next morning and as I was pulling into a parking spot in parking garage, all of the sudden, I was crashed into the wall at a high rate of speed. I am extremely concerned that this may have been a malfunction with the Nissan Rogue as this occurred less then 24 hours after it was serviced. My car was totaled and the damage looks like it hit at 30 mph or more which is extremely alarming as I was slowing coming into the parking spot. I don't know exactly what happened however if there have been any issues with Nissans and sudden acceleration, I feel this needs to be investigated. My Rogue is a 2022 and had to have the engine replaced in early 2024. Nissan could not give any explanation as to why. My car has been taken to a salvage yard and I am concerned that if there was and issue, any evidence of an issued could be destroyed. Had there not been heavy duty cables, I could have gone further through the parking garage wall and fallen 3 stories.

My engine light came on and I almost immediately lost power. This car is only 3 years old with about 87k miles. I was on the highway going over 70mph when this happened. The dealer says the coolant system failed which allowed coolant to get into the engine. Either way...engine failure, which Nissan has not currently honoring their extended warranty offered on this model for the repair. There were no indicator lights, temp warnings, radiator overheating/low antifreeze, nothing. Not until the engine light came on and I immediately had to pull over. Usually I would get an email from Nissan if their systems picked up an issue, but I received nothing until my car was being towed.

PE24020 · 2021 Nissan Rogue Inner Tie Rod Failures

Opened Aug 5, 2024 · Closed Aug 24, 2026

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering:linkages:tie Rod Assembly

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to assess allegations of tie rod bending, deformation, or related steering linkage damage in certain 2021 Nissan Rogue vehicles. A bent tie rod can affect wheel alignment and steering geometry, and in some circumstances may result in steering pull, abnormal tire wear, reduced steering precision, difficulty maintaining directional control, or loss of vehicle steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs), Early Warning Reporting data, manufacturer field reports, warranty claims, consumer complaints submitted to the manufacturer, and other information provided by Nissan in response to ODI’s information request. ODI also evaluated the reported failure circumstances, vehicle age and mileage, incident severity, and whether the available evidence indicated a defect trend occurring in the absence of external impact or other non-defect causes. Based on the information reviewed, ODI identified a low number of tie rod bending or deformation allegations relative to the subject vehicle population and exposure. The available reports did not indicate a consistent failure pattern, common production period, common mileage, or repeatable failure mode suggestive of a safety-related defect. Many of the reviewed incidents involved circumstances consistent with external loading or impact-related damage, including pothole strikes, curb contact, road debris impacts, prior collision damage, or other abnormal steering/suspension loads. ODI’s analysis did not identify a trend of tie rod bending occurring during normal vehicle operation without evidence of external influence. The complaint and warranty rates were low, and ODI did not identify a pattern of crashes, injuries, or loss-of-control events attributable to a tie rod defect in the subject vehicles. Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by new circumstances or additional information. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

PE23023 · Complete Loss Of Motive Power Due To Engine Failure

Opened Dec 13, 2023 · Closed Jul 18, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:hard Parts Internal/mechanical

On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure.  The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash.  Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the alleged defect.  When combining ODI and manufacturer report data, there are 1,878 unique VINs that have experienced failures across all subject vehicles.  In one of the early warning reports, ODI identified an incident involving a 2022 Infiniti QX55 that resulted in an engine fire following an alleged engine failure. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 was not included in the scope of this investigation but the vehicle model shares the same 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engine.  Based on the information included with the early warning report, the fire can be directly related to the alleged defect.   A further review of ODI and manufacturer data, identified 12 allegations of engine compartment fires in subject vehicles; three were confirmed as directly related to the engine failure, and nine reports described an under-hood fire that occurred following a loss of power event. Additionally, ODI identified multiple reports describing an engine block crack or hole surrounded by oil residue following an engine failure. On June 27, 2025, Nissan submitted recall 25V-437 involving 443,899 MY 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles. The recall remedy provides the dealer instructions to inspect the engine oil pan for the presence of specific metal debris. For customers with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM). For customers with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. In the case where specific debris is detected and confirmed by Nissan Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine. In addition, Nissan will extend the vehicle warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for the recall subject vehicle population after the dealer performs the inspection. Nissan has implemented multiple corrective actions to address the identified manufacturing defects of certain engine block internal components.  In view of the recall action (25V437) taken by Nissan, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Engine And Engine Cooling
