TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 NISSAN CUBE. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, IT FAILED TO START WHEN PROMPTED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO START. DIRECTLY AFTER REMOVING THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO OPERATE. GERMAINE NISSAN IN COLUMBUS, OHIO WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REPLACED THE BATTERY AND IGNITION SWITCH, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PREVIOUS REPAIRS WERE NOT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE PRESSURE RELEASE VALVE WAS FAULTY AND ALLOWED WATER TO ENTER THE VEHICLE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE FAILURE CAUSED SEVERE RUST AND CORROSION IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR PANEL. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT'S INSURANCE COMPANY SENT A MECHANIC OUT TO ASSESS THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT AND THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

AS OF FEBRUARY 2017, WHAT I LATER FOUND OUT WAS THE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION, ALSO KNOWN AS, CVT TRANSMISSION, STARTED TO FAIL ON MY 2010 NISAN CUBE, WHICH HAS ONLY ONE OWNER. ON THE WAY TO WORK A LOUD WHINING NOISE CAME FROM UNDER THE HOOD. AS I WAS DRIVING ON A VERY BUSY STREET, THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE AND DECELERATE RANDOMLY WHILE IN DRIVE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD ALSO OCCASIONALLY ILLUMINATE. SEVERAL MECHANICS COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG, UNTIL I TOOK THE CUBE TO A MECHANIC THAT KNEW ABOUT THE MANY FAILURES THE NISSAN CVT TRANSMISSION WAS HAVING. I WAS TOLD THEN THAT NISSAN HAD CREATED A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM TO DEAL WITH THE CVT FAILURE; OF WHICH I WAS NEVER INFORMED BY NISSAN. EVEN THOUGH I CONTINUE TO RECEIVE EMAILS AND ADS FOR THE COMPANY. THE LETTER FROM NISSAN STATES THAT THE WARRANTY ON THE CVT WILL BE EXTENDED. I RECENTLY HAD MY STEERING LOCK MECHANISM GO OUT ON MY 2010 NISSAN CUBE AND LEAVE ME STRANDED. I HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED BECAUSE IT WOULD NO LONGER START THINKING IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. =$$ NO OTHER DEALERSHIPS WOULD LOOK AT IT BECAUSE IT WAS WHAT SEEMED AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE, I HAD TO TAKE IT TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM. I WAS QUOTED $950 FOR IT TO GET FIXED. UPON DOING RESEARCH I REALIZED THIS SAME PART WAS RECALLED ON THE 2009S. I ALSO FOUND MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE AND HOW NISSAN WAS NOT TAKING CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. I TOOK MY ISSUE TO NISSAN CORPORATE TO GET IT RESOLVED BUT THEY SAID AT THIS TIME THEY COULD NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT BECAUSE THERE WERE "REVISIONS" DONE TO THIS PART. THE CVT TRANSMISSIONS IN THE 2009 AND 2010 CUBES ARE KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE. I HAD MINE REPLACED IN FEBRUARY OF 2015 AND IN MAY 2016, 15 MONTHS LATER, IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY BUT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION. SINCE I AM NOW OVER THE MILEAGE LIMIT FOR THEM REPLACING IT I AM STUCK PAYING $4000.00 FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION THAT WILL ONLY BE UNDER WARRANTY FOR 12 MONTHS OR 12,000 MILES. THE PROBLEM STARTS WITH SURGES IN THE RPM'S AFTER THAT THE CAR WILL NOT GO FORWARD AFTER COMING TO A STOP UNLESS YOU TURN THE CAR OFF THEN BACK ON. EVEN AFTER THAT IT WILL DO IT EVERY TIME YOU COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. VERY DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO GO THROUGH A BUSY INTERSECTION. Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2009-2010 Cube vehicles. The driver’s air bag inflator may rupture or detach from the steering wheel during air bag deployment.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A driver's air bag that ruptures or detaches can strike the driver or other occupants, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the front air bag inflator serial number, and replace the inflator as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 9, 2026. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261. Nissan's number for this recall is R26A1. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning April 14, 2026.

NISSAN IS RECALLING MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 NISSAN CUBE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 30, 2009 THROUGH JULY 30, 2010. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY." WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS ROTATED FOLLOWING A REAR MOVING BARRIER CRASH TEST AS REQUIRED, THE AMOUNT OF FUEL LEAKAGE EXCEEDED THE ALLOWABLE LIMITS.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL DEVELOP A SPECIAL PROTECTOR AND ATTACH IT TO THE GASOLINE RECIRCULATION TUBE AT THE LOCATION OF THE FILLER NECK CONNECTOR. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25005 on June 13, 2025, to assess the scope, root cause, and potential defect in 2009 Model Year (MY) Nissan Cube vehicles equipped with Takata PSDI-X air bag inflators.At the time the investigation was opened, analysis by Nissan and Takata (now New Leaf LLC) indicated that a rupture occurred at a weld point between the inflator cap and housing in a 2009 MY Nissan Cube.Nissan ruled out the propellant degradation root cause characteristic of the larger, well known, Takata recall, and instead identified a welding root cause. On April 9, 2026, Nissan North America, Inc. submitted a Part 573 Safety Recall Report to address the weld defect.Recall 26V230 includes the 28,388 2009 MY vehicles identified in the opening resume for this investigation and expands the population to include 2010 MY Nissan Cube vehicles for a total population of 47,928 vehicles produced between October 10, 2008, and September 25, 2010.Nissan identified the driver’s front air bag inflator (Takata PSDI-X, Part Number 98560-7991C) produced by TK Services Inc. within a specific lot may contain an improper body weld seal to the inflator base. This improper weld can cause the air bag module to detach from the steering wheel during deployment, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant in the event of a crash. Dealers will inspect the serial number on the driver’s air bag inflator in recalled vehicles to identify the air bag inflator lot. If the inflator is part of the affected lot, the dealer will remove and replace it with a new inflator manufactured by a different supplier. This repair will be performed free of charge. From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field.
