I BOUGHT MY CAR BRAND NEW WITH ONLY 113 MILES ON IT. I HAVE SENSE PUT 160K HIGHWAY MILES ON IT BUT HAVE HAD NO ISSUES UNTIL NOW BECAUSE I GET IT SERVICED REGULARLY. I WAS DRIVING TO WORK LAST WEEK AND AT 30-45 MPH THE RPMS STARTED JUMPING BETWEEN 1K AND 2K. ONCE I GOT PAST 60 MPH THIS STOPPED BUT EVENTUALLY MY CAR WOULD STUTTER AND STALL AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS MAKING IT DANGEROUS IF TURNING IN FRONT OF TRAFFIC OR COMING THROUGH INTERSECTIONS. I TOOK IT IN IMMEDIATELY FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION AND SINCE MY WARRANTY WAS OUT I WOULD NEED TO PAY $4500 OUT OF POCKET. I GOT A SECOND OPINION AND I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP I SERVICE IT AT THAT IT WAS MY FAULT BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE THE TRANSMISSION FLUSHED WHEN THEY TOLD ME TO, YET THERE IS NOTHING IN THE OWNERS MANUAL STATING THIS IS A REQUIREMENT, ONLY A RECOMMENDATION BY THE DEALER. AS SHADY AS DEALERSHIPS ARE THESE DAYS OF COURSE I DIDN'T HAVE IT DONE BECAUSE I ASSUMED THEY WERE CHARGING ME FOR SOMETHING UNNECESSARILY. I SPOKE WITH A MECHANIC FRIEND OF MINE AND HE SAID THE TRANSMISSION FLUSH WOULD HAVE DONE NOTHING TO PREVENT MY TRANSMISSION FAIL. WHAT IS EVEN WORSE IS THAT NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND MY DASH LOOKED THE SAME AS IT ALWAYS DOES, THE ONLY LIGHTS THAT CAME ON WERE MY BATTERY AND BRAKE LIGHTS WHEN MY CAR SHUT OFF AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, BUT IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP AFTER THAT. I HAVE ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE FROM NISSAN AND HAVE BEEN DENIED EVEN THOUGH I HAVE SERVICED MY CAR WITH THE DEALER EVEN AFTER MY WARRANTY EXPIRED. THERE ARE 4 OTHER PEOPLE IN MY FAMILY THAT OWN NISSANS BUT APPARENTLY THAT MEANS NOTHING TO THIS COMPANY. NEEDLESS TO SAY IF I CAN GET THIS THING TRADED IN ON A HONDA I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A NISSAN AGAIN! ALSO, JUST DO A GOOGLE SEARCH OF PROBLEMS WITH NISSAN ALTIMAS. THE RESULTS ARE STAGGERING.

I STARTED ENGINE, AND PLACED FOOT ON BRAKE AND BEGAN TO SHIFT OUT OF PARK AND INTO REVERSE, BUT SHIFT WAS LOCKED. I TRIED TO SHIFT TO DRIVE BUT IT STILL WOULD NOT ENGAGE.

MY CAR IS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA AND IT JUST HIT 90,000 MILES. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN MARCH 2013 WITH 45,000 MILES ON IT. MAY 25TH MY CAR STARTED HAVING TROUBLE. IT INCLUDED GOING BACKWARDS WHEN THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE, LOSING POWER AS I'M DRIVING, REVING/WINDING NOISE, AND FINALLY NOT MOVING AT ALL. EVERYTHING POINTED A PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND TO TAKE IT TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP. AFTER DOING THE DIAGNOSTICS, THEY SAID I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. BECAUSE MY WARRANTY RAN OUT IN MARCH I ASKED ABOUT THE COST OF THE REPLACEMENT AND WAS TOLD IT WAS $3,800. I SPOKE WITH NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS ON MAY 29TH AND WAS TOLD THAT THE REGIONAL CONSUMER MANAGER WOULD CALL. JASON DID CALL AND SAID HE HAD TO RESEARCH. ON TUESDAY, JUNE 5TH, THE DECISION WAS THAT BECAUSE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. I ASKED HIM ABOUT THE RECALL THAT WAS ISSUED BY NISSAN IN DECEMBER 2016 ACKNOWLEDGING THE CVT TRANSMISSIONS NEEDED TO BE REPROGRAMMED AND IF NOT IT WOULD LEAD TO ACCELERATED DAMAGE. I ALSO MADE HIM AWARE THAT I NEVER RECEIVED THAT NOTICE. HIS RESPONSE WAS BECAUSE I WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE, I DID NOT RECEIVE THE RECALL NOTICE. HE WOULD NOT ANSWER HOW IF NISSAN KNEW THAT THE CVT TRANSMISSIONS WERE A PROBLEM ON SOME VEHICLES WHY DID IT MATTER THAT MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED IN MARCH. HE ALSO HAD NO RESPONSE TO ME SAYING THAT A NORMAL TRANSMISSION DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED ON A CAR THAT IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD AND HAS NOT EVEN HIT 100,000 MILES. SO ALTHOUGH IT IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH SOME OF THE CVT TRANSMISSIONS, A RECALL THAT IS ON NISSAN'S WEBSITE ASSOCIATED WITH MY VIN NUMBER, THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT I DID NOT RECEIVE THE RECALL NOTICE TO BRING IT IN FOR SERVICE, I AM STUCK WITH A $3,800 REPAIR BILL IF I WANT TO FIX MY CAR.

THINGS WERE WORKING FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. NOW THAT THE WEATHER IS STARTING TO WARM UP, THE ISSUE IS OCCURRING AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CLAIM THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG, NO CODES/ERRORS APPEARED. THE ISSUE CONTINUES. AFTER SPEAKING WITH A COUPLE OF REPUTABLE MECHANICS, THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSION AND THERE IS NO KNOWN FIX. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY CAR.

IT STARTED WITH A WHIRLING WHEN DESCENDING AN INCLINE. SINCE I HAD THE RECALL WORK COMPLETED, I ASSUMED THIS SOUND WAS NORMAL. I HAVE NEVER DRIVEN OR BEEN A PASSENGER IN A NISSAN. EXACTLY 1,383 MILES AFTER MY WARRANTY AND 13 MONTHS AND 2 DAYS AFTER THE RECALL WORK THE CAR BEGAN TO SHUDDER AND CUT OFF AT INTERSECTIONS. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN ATLANTA AND ITS FAMOUS SPAGHETTI JUNCTION. THE FIRST TIME I ASSUMED IT WAS A FLUKE. THE 2ND TIME I WANTED TO BLAME IT ON BAD GAS. I HAD A DIAGNOSTIC DONE, HOWEVER, THERE WERE NO CODES. A TECHNICIAN DROVE IT AND SAID IT FELT LIKE IT WAS SEARCHING, BUT DID NOT SHUT OFF. HE TOLD ME TO POP IT IN NEUTRAL WHEN APPROACHING A LIGHT OR SLOW DOWN. I DROVE TO AN AAMCO WHERE IT SHUDDERED AND SHUT OFF IN THEIR LOT. FIVE HOURS LATER AAMCO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE SHUT OFF AND FOUND NO CODES. I TOOK IT TO A DIFFERENT NISSAN DEALER THAN THE ONE THAT PERFORMED THE RECALL WORK. THEY GOT NO CODES, BUT THEY WERE WILLING TO SELL ME A BATTERY, CABLES AND AN IDLE REBOOT FOR $360! THE NISSAN MANAGER PICKED ME UP AS A CURTSEY AND ONCE I TOLD HIM THE PROBLEMS, HE IMMEDIATELY SAID THAT HE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS-THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THAT BASICALLY THE CAR WAS STUCK IN 4TH AND COULDN'T SLIP INTO 1ST. I ASKED THAT A TECHNICIAN DRIVE IT HOME IN HOPES OF DUPLICATING. THE NEXT DAY A SERVICE REP REPORTED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE SHUDDERING/SHUT-OFF, BUT THAT THEY COULD FEEL IT SEARCHING FOR GEARS. THEY SAID IT WAS POSSIBLY A TORQUE CONVERTER AND THAT A TOTAL REBUILD OF THE TRANSMISSION AT $4,000 WAS REQUIRED. AAMCO IS WILLING TO REPLACE THE TORQUE CONVERTER AS LONG AS I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I MAY NEED A TOTAL REBUILD AS THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN IT JUST BE A TORQUE CONVERTER. AS I OWE MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH, I HAVE ZERO OPTIONS BUT TO PAY FOR A COSTLY REBUILD.

20V315000 · Latches/locks/linkages:hood:latch

May 28, 2020

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner’s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.

EA21002 · Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

Opened Sep 17, 2021 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module; Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

EA19002 · Rear Suspension Control Arm Failure

Opened Jul 29, 2019 · Closed Jun 16, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Suspension:rear

On July 29, 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened EA19002 to investigate instances of alleged rear lower control arm failures in 2013-2018 Nissan Altima and 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima vehicles. At the time the investigation was opened ODI had 91 consumer complaints alleging rear lower control arm failures in the subject vehicles.ODI was concerned about these complaints because many of them alleged an increased steering effort or loss of vehicle control. At the time these complaints were received, ODI was also aware of a proactive service campaign addressing 2013 Nissan Altima in salt-belt states for a similar concern. Since opening the investigation, ODI has confirmed, based on consumer complaints, warranty data, and testing conducted by Nissan and ODI, that owners of the subject vehicles are experiencing a corroded bushing at one of three mounting points of the control arm to the rear subframe.ODI has also confirmed that drivers become aware of the problem because of sound and abnormal vibrations. In addition, the failure mileage is typically over 113,000 miles at the time of failure. In conjunction with Nissan and VRTC, ODI participated in testing to assess the potential safety consequence of a bushing failure. It was found the Vehicle Dynamic Control system allows the driver to maintain vehicle control in the event of a bushing failure. With between 7 to 13 years of field exposure, ODI is aware of only one low speed crash allegation describing minor contact with another vehicle’s trailer hitch. Nissan acknowledges that a crack can develop in affected control arms due to stress loading from normal use and that salts commonly used for roadway snow and ice treatment may result in corrosion that exacerbates the progression of the crack.Nissan implemented a design change in January of 2018 to improve the durability of the lower control arm.Affected vehicles have either been repaired with the countermeasure part under a customer satisfaction campaign or been provided a warranty extension from 3 years/36,000 miles to 10 year/unlimited mileage. Through testing and analysis of the information obtained to date, ODI has not identified a defect representing an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety involving corrosion of the subject rear lower control arm at this time. With a declining trend of reports and Nissan’s actions to implement a countermeasure and extended warranty coverage, further investigation of the issue does not appear to be warranted at this time. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov. A detailed discussion of the investigation and related complaint numbers can be viewed in the attached closing report.

PE18-013 was opened on December 1, 2018, with 4 complaints to ODI alleging incidents of the lower control arm fracturing at a connection point to the vehicle chassis due to corrosion. ODI has received an additional 87 complaints since the PE was opened. During PE18-013, Nissan indicated model years 2013-2018 shared a common rear lower control arm design. Nissan provided complaint and warranty data regarding 48 incidents of the subject failure. The majority of the complaints are from vehicles registered in salt belt states. There have been no crashes, injuries, or fatalities confirmed as of this date. Nissan advised that it has conducted testing to assess safety risk. Nissan states that due to low incident rate, high detectability, and low risk of adverse vehicle dynamics, it does not believe the subject lower control arm failure poses an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. This preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to Engineering Analysis (EA) 19-002. During the EA, ODI will continue to collect and analyze complaint and field data in its efforts to fully assess the scope and frequency of the alleged defect. More importantly, ODI will also seek additional information and data regarding the potential safety consequences of rear lower control arm failure, both from evidence collected from field failures and through more rigorous and comprehensive vehicle testing to be conducted by either Nissan and/or NHTSA.The ODI reports (VOQs) cited above can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers: 11234334, 11234232, 11234189, 11233771, 11233234, 11232381, 11231589, 11230323, 11230184, 11229023, 11229003, 11228730, 11228651, 11228631, 11228625, 11223086, 11222602, 11222427, 11222303, 11221802, 11219943, 11217980, 11217542, 11217505, 11217290, 11210699, 11209647, 11208580, 11208274, 11207545, 11206310, 11205711, 11205461, 11203864, 11203005, 11195416, 11193545, 11193020, 11192269, 11192066, 11191270, 11191207, 11191185, 11191042, 11190360, 11190323, 11187334, 11187157, 11186747, 11186195, 11185664, 11185632, 11185589, 11183799, 11183295, 11183198, 11182705,11182528, 11182265, 11182137, 11182088, 11181373, 11181223, 11181155, 11181009, 11180126, 11176565, 11176261, 11176135, 11175821, 11172604, 11172200, 11172065, 11170019, 11169930, 11165194, 11163833, 11163489, 11162559, 11162195, 11161956, 11161497, 11161117, 11157323, 11157234, 11156772, 11141169, 11139516, 11129476, 11122829, 11114374.

In April 2014, Nissan North America launched Safety Recall 14V-138 to address problems with the Occupant Classification System (OCS) algorithm in the following vehicles: model year (MY) 2013-2014 Nissan Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and LEAF; MY 2013 Infiniti JX35; MY 2014 Infiniti QX60 and Q50; and MY 2013 Nissan NV 200/Taxi vehicles.According to Nissan, the OCS may misclassify adult front passenger occupants and turn off the passenger's frontal air bag for an adult occupant of sufficient weight.In March 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query after the agency received approximately 124 complaints alleging problems with the OCS after the recall repairs and/or other OCS related repairs were made by Nissan/Infiniti dealers.The majority of the complaints alleged the passenger air bag status light stays on (i.e., indicating passenger air bag is turned off) for adult front passengers of sufficient weight.Many of the complaints stated the dealers have made multiple repairs but the problem still persists.In its June 2015 response to ODI's information request under the Recall Query, Nissan provided approximately 1,121 complaints and field reports on the recalled vehicles.These reports alleged OCS issues similar to the NHTSA reports described above.At this time, NHTSA has received a total of approximately 208 complaints (note: total of 1,271 reports shown in the table above eliminates 58 duplicative reports received by ODI and manufacturer).This Recall Query has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA15-004) to conduct a comparative assessment and further evaluate the effectiveness of the recall remedy which will include a thorough review of the countermeasures taken by Nissan and its suppliers.The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers:10583283 10585264 10585349 10585379 10592434 10593399 10593501 10594329 10594614 10594755 10595161 10595645 10595946 10596128 10596459 10596952 10597037 10597452 10597518 10597719 10598537 10598869 10604755 10604834 10605188 10605251 10606565 10606828 10607038 10609649 10610519 10610991 10614467 10614609 10614745 10616905 10617008 10617507 10617903 10618099 10618202 10619059 10619563 10620719 10621840 10622214 10625808 10625981 10625998 10626006 10626023 10626335 10626458 10626732 10628355 10629382 10629460 10629606 10630441 10630502 10630990 10632251 10632588 10632934 10632997 10633714 10633810 10637994 10638591 10639040 10639147 10639324 10639473 10643046 10643843 10644203 10644333 10644341 10644690 10644891 10644985 10648834 10648997 10649414 10649772 10649874 10651360 10651564 10651924 10651982 10652024 10658665 10658844 10659484 10660294 10661195 10661358 10661541 10661795 10661855 10662901 10663033 10663338 10663860 10663978 10668054 10668768 10670538 10672807 10673088 10676471 10678478 10678997 10679512 10680748 10680769 10680975 10681656 10682235 10682902 10682993 10683391 10683689 10689672 10689809 10689981 10691626 10692137 10692558 10692625 10693168 10695312 10700614 10700960 10701008 10701011 10701014 10701018 10701023 10701027 10701031 10701032 10701035 10701045 10701055 10701064 10701074 10701146 10701196 10701228 10701237 10701254 10701301 10701306 10701326 10701367 10701370 10701384 10701415 10701453 10701526 10701558 10701656 10701670 10701946 10702003 10702667 10702798 10703032 10703657 10703766 10703813 10704196 10704988 10705530 10705919 10706621 10712543 10712568 10712575 10713335 10714316 10714330 10714536 10714980 10715132 10715945 10717336 10720918 10720971 10721331 10721746 10723424 10724568 10731167 10731868 10732012 10732065
