I WENT ONLINE AND NOTICED ALL THE BUZZ AND COMPLAINTS REPORTING THIS SAME ISSUE REGARDING BROWN WIRE BEING SEVERED ON MANY MAKES, MODELS AND YEARS ON MER BENZ VEHICLES. I E-MAILED MB CUSTOMER SERVICE TO ASK ABOUT A RECALL AND THEY DO NOT HAVE ONE TO MY SURPRISE. GOT A CALL TODAY FROM [XXX] @ [XXX] STATING THERE IS NOTHING MB CAN DO SINCE MY WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED...I ADVISED HIM I HAVE UNDER 50K MILES ON THIS CAR, HE SAID THAT I WOULD NEED TO GET A DIAGNOSTIC TEST COSTING ME OVER $100 IN ORDER TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS PLUS ACCORDING TO INTERNET COMMENTS THIS IS A $250 OR MORE REPAIR COST. I EXPLAINED MY INTERNET FINDINGS AND HE AGAIN APOLOGIZED, SAID THERE IS NOTHING HE CAN DO FOR ME. I EXPLAINED MY CONCERNS AND FEEL THAT MB SHOULD STEP UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN GOOD FAITH AND GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FIX THIS ISSUE AT THEIR EXPENSE, OBVIOUSLY IT IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE MAL-FUNCTION AND THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THE PROBLEM AND SHOULD NOT PUT THIS BURDEN AND EXPENSE ON THEIR CUSTOMER'S. WE COULDN'T SEE IT LEAKING ANYWHERE SO PULLED IT IN THE GARAGE AND IT STUNK UP OUR WHOLE GARAGE LIKE GAS. WE THOUGHT MAYBE THE DEALER OVER FILLED IT SO MAYBE IT WAS JUST VENTING FUMES. IT EVENTUALLY WENT AWAY. THEN ON 4/12/15 I FILLED THE TANK UP AND THE GAS SMELL CAME BACK. SO IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN IT'S A FULL TANK. THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR ALOT OF E-CLASS W211 CARS. MERCEDES-BENZ HAS RECENTLY MADE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO HAVE IT FIXED FOR NON-PZEV VEHICLES BUT I HAVE A PZEV VEHICLE AND THEY WON'T WARRANTY IT FOR ME! MY LITTLE GIRLS RIDE IN THE BACK SEAT THAT IS RIGHT OVER THE GAS TANK! THIS SHOULD BE FIXED PZEV VEHICLE OR NOT! *TR

THE LOCAL MERCEDES DEALERSHIP (EL DORADO HILLS, CA) INSPECTED THE CAR, FOUND THE LEAK TO BE COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE FUEL PUMP AT THE FUEL TANK, ACKNOWLEDGED THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND THAT MERCEDES HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO COVER FUEL SYSTEM REPAIRS. SO I LEFT THE CAR TO BE REPAIRED, BUT LATER THE DEALERSHIP CALLS AND SAYS MY CAR IS A PZEV (PARTIAL ZERO EMISSIONS VEHICLE) CAR, AND THEREFORE NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY EXTENSION, EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE SAME PART THAT FAILS ON A NON-PZEV CAR THAT IS COVERED. I'VE HAD SEVERAL CONVERSATIONS WITH MBUSA ([XXX] ) AND THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP (SERVICE REP. [XXX]). THEY HAVE OFFERED ME A 15% DISCOUNT ON THE REPAIR. I HAVE ALREADY PAID THEM $165.00 FOR THE INSPECTION. THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT IN THE FUEL SYSTEM SHOULD BE REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE BY MERCEDES. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

I PURCHASED A 2007 E350 4MATIC WAGON FOR MY PARENTS JULY OF 2011 WITH 47,000 MILES. 3,000 MILES LATER, WE NOTICED A STRONG FUEL ODOR AFTER FILLING THE TANK. TOOK IT TO MB AND A FILTER AND SEALS WERE REPLACED WHICH SEEMED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. MY DAD NOTICED THE PROBLEM AGAIN THIS PAST WEEK. WE TOOK IT IN TO A CERTIFIED MB SHOP AND THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DETECTED USING A PRESSURIZED TEST. THE TANK WAS LOWERED AFTER BEING TOLD BY MB THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ISSUED FOR THE ENTIRE TANK. THE PROBLEM IS, THE FULL ASSEMBLY SYSTEM FOR THE TANK IS NOT AVAILABLE AND THE ETA FOR THE PART IS UNKNOWN. UNFORTUNATELY, THE AUTHORIZED SHOP WAS TOLD THE PART WAS AVAILABLE, SO THEY ORDERED IT AND LOWERED THE TANK. THEN MB CALLED THEM BACK TO TELL THEM THE ETA WAS UNKNOWN. SO NOW, THE DILEMMA IS THAT WE HAVE NO PART, THE TANK IS LOWERED, THE SHOP NEEDS TO BE PAID FOR THE LABOR, MB HAS NO ETA ON THE PART AND MY PARENTS ARE WITHOUT A CAR. ISSUE NOW: 1. WHY WERE WE NEVER INFORMED BY MB OF THIS RECALL? 2. WHO PAYS FOR THE LABOR AT THE AUTHORIZED SHOP? 3. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE MB HAS NO IDEA OF AN ETA ON ONE OF IT'S OWN PARTS? HELP!!! WHAT DO I DO? *TR

AFTER PURCHASING THIS CAR IN MAY 2011 FROM A USED CAR DEALER, AFTER EVERY REFUELING WITH FILLING THE TANK THERE WAS A POWERFUL SMELL OF GASOLINE AS IF IT HAD BEEN SPILLED. GOING FORWARD WE TRIED TO ONLY PARTIALLY FILL THE TANK WHICH SEEMED TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM FOR AWHILE. AS TIME WENT ON THE ODOR CONTINUED TO INCREASE SO IN 8/2014 WE TOOK TO OUR REGULAR MECHANIC TO FIX. HE REPLACED THE GASKET AND STILL THE GAS SMELL CONTINUED. 02/2015 TOOK CAR TO MERCEDES WHERE I WAS TOLD BASED ON MY VIN THAT THE FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT WAS COVERED UNDER AN "EXTENDED WARRANTY" THAT MERCEDES BENZ HAD OFFERED. HOWEVER, ONCE THE CAR WAS REVIEWED THEY THEN STATED THAT THIS WARRANTY WAS ONLY FOR "PLASTIC TANKS" WHICH MINE WAS NOT AND THE COST TO REPLACE WOULD BE $2600 WHICH WAS WITH A DISCOUNT! IT IS CLEARLY A PROBLEM THAT IS NOT UNKNOWN TO MB, BUT STILL NO HELP. CAR SHOULD HAVE RECALLS RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM. *JS

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on January 23, 2012 as PE12-001 based on 20 consumer reports in model year (MY) 2003-2006 E55 AMG vehicles.Based on new reports in other E-Class vehicles, ODI upgraded the investigation to Engineering Analysis (EA) 13-003 on March 15, 2013, and expanded the scope to all E-Class vehicles through MY 2008.The complainants alleged a strong odor of gasoline fuel both inside and outside of their vehicle, particularly after refilling the fuel tank. Many of the complainants noted that the odor subsided or went away after driving some distance thereby lowering the fuel level in the tank.Other owners reported they would only fill the tank to about three quarters full to avoid the odor altogether. Some complainants alleged fuel leaked from the fuel filter/sender, located on the top of the fuel tank on the driver's side, and collected on top of the tank. There were also allegations that the fuel leaks were associated with an Emissions Recall Campaign (No. 2008020001) conducted by Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (Mercedes) in 2008 on MY 2003-2006 E-Class and CLS-Class AMG models. The issue in the recall involved small cracks in the pressurized outlet fitting of the fuel filter/sender.AMG vehicles are high performance models that operate at higher fuel pressure and use a different fuel filter/sender and fuel pump than non-AMG models.Information on Recall No. 2008020001 is available from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website at www.EPA.gov.ODI's investigation found various leak sources that are unrelated to the outlet fitting cited in the EPA recall campaign.Through interviews with complainants, field inspections of complaint vehicles, and the collection and laboratory analysis of failed parts, three identifiable leak sources were found. The component parts and areas of the leaks involve the On-Board Diagnostic fuel tank pressure sensor (located on top of the fuel filter/sender), the outlet of the centrally mounted fuel tank fuel filling limiter valve, and the top of the fuel pump. These areas of leakage are located at the top of the fuel tank in unpressurized parts of the fuel system. When the tank is full, fuel can slowly weep/seep from micro-cracks in these components and may collect in cavities on top of the filter/sender, pump, or tank.Contrary to complainant's allegations that fuel entered the inside of their vehicle under the rear seat bench, neither ODI nor Mercedes found a plausible way for this to occur. The fuel tank is located outside of the passenger compartment, attached to the underside of the vehicle. The service access ports for the fuel filter/sender (driver's side) and fuel pump (passenger's side) are located under the rear seat bench, covered by a steel plate, sealed and bolted to the vehicle floor. When technicians service the fuel filter/sender, which has a regularly scheduled 60,000 mile service interval, and/or the fuel pump, the work is performed from inside the vehicle by working through the access ports.By letter dated September 4, 2014, Mercedes has notified the agency that it will extend the original warranty coverage to 15 years and unlimited mileage on Covered Fuel Tank Components in E-Class vehicles in MY 2003-2009 and CLS-Class vehicles in MY 2006-2011.The covered fuel tank components for the warranty extension include the fuel tank, fuel filter/sender, fuel pump, and all related gaskets/seals and retention rings.ODI is closing this investigation based on the manufacturer's extend warranty of the affected fuel system components and in consideration that the nature of the leaks does not appear to present an un
