ANY TIME I PROCEED TO MAKE A TURN, MY WHEEL STIFFENS. EVERY LIGHT IN MY DASHBOARD LIGHTS UP. MY RADIO CUTS OFF AND CAR STALLS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM WITH THIS EXACT MODEL OF CAR BUT MY VIN IS NOT COVERED.

IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A SPLIT FUEL PUMP RETAINING ALLOWED THE FUEL PUMP TO SEPARATE FROM THE FUEL TANK CAUSING GASOLINE TO LEAK. FORTUNATELY THE VEHICLE DID NOT CATCH ON FIRE. THANK GOODNESS. I MAY NOT HAVE HAD A SON TODAY. THE REPAIR CAME TO OVER $500.00. MAZDA DOES NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO COVER THE FULL COST. IN MY OPINION THIS IS NOT A MAINTENANCE ITEM BUT A DEFINITE SAFETY DEFECT.

THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TAKING SEVERE AND ERRATIC SHIFTS WHEN GOING UPHILL WHEN MY MAZDA REACHED 70,000 MILES. THESE SHIFTS ARE SO SEVERE THAT THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED I THOUGHT A TIRE HAD BLOWN OUT. IT OCCURRED ON A HIGH MOUNTAIN PASS THAT HAS NO SIDERAILS AND MANY FATALITIES HAVE OCCURRED SIMPLY FROM WEATHER CONDITIONS. WHEN WE CONTACTED MAZDA CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY ADMITTED THAT A DEFECTIVE PART WAS IN THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE OF THE CAR. THE PART, IN FACT, IS NO LONGER MANUFACTURED BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN RENDERED DEFECTIVE. MAZDA TOLD US OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL MONTHS AND HOURS OF PUTTING US ON HOLD AND SEVERAL MORE THOUSAND MILES PUT ON THE CAR THAT THE ONLY THING WE COULD DO IS REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. WHY IS THIS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE AND THEREFORE A RECALL? MAZDA CUSTOMER SERVICE PROMISED TO REVIEW THE CASE AND OUR MULTIPLE PHONE CALLS, NEVER GOT BACK WITH US, AND REFUSED TO SEE THAT IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THEY WILL DO NOTHING TO REPAIR THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE OF THEIR FAULTY MANUFACTURING. WE STILL CONTINUE TO GO OVER THIS PASS, NOW IN SNOWY AND ICY CONDITIONS WITH A BABY IN THE BACKSEAT AND NO IDEA WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WILL GO OUT. UNFORTUNATELY UNTIL SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR DIES MAZDA WON'T TAKE THIS ISSUE SERIOUSLY. I HAVE LOST ALL FAITH IN MAZDA'S QUALITY OF ASSURANCE OR CONCERN FOR CUSTOMER SAFETY AND WILL NOT BE PURCHASING ANOTHER MAZDA IN THE FUTURE.

The subject vehicles have electro-hydraulic power assist steering (EHPAS).The complaint counts shown above alleged a loss of power steering assist in the subject vehicles.Usually, but not always, the loss is accompanied by the simultaneous lighting of an indicator light on the dash. The complaints include 14 alleged crashes involving 6 injuries. On Mazda3 and Mazda5 vehicles manufactured from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008, rust may have formed inside the EPAS high-pressure pipe during manufacture due to improper processing. If the rust is present it may damage the power steering pump bearings leading to an increased load on the electric motor; this results in an elevated operating temperature for the EPAS system. To prevent excessive overheating of the system, which could potentially cause permanent damage, afailsafe mode which de-powers the electric pump is implemented. This causes a loss of power assist making it more difficult to steer the vehicle, especially at lower vehicle speeds.Once the failsafe is implemented the EPAS system will remain disabled until the ignition is turned off. However EPAS will be re-enabled if the operating temperature is reduced (i.e., within an acceptable range) on a subsequent drive cycle. On August 8, 2010 Mazda submitted a Part 573 defect information report initiating Safety Recall 10V-374 to remedy the subject vehicles. The report, which contains additional details on the remedy repair, is available at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/.ODI notes that the affected population shown in that report includes approximately 8,000 vehicles Mazda repaired prior to initiating the recall.
