TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 LEXUS GX470. THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS AND OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE HEAT SHIELD HAD DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE BOLTS WERE WORN. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 120,000. A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP INFORMED THE CONSUMER, THE HEAT SHIELD LOCATED ABOVE THE MUFFLER HAD FALLEN OFF AND WAS TRAPPED BETWEEN THE MUFFLER AND THE FLOOR PAN OF THE VEHICLE. THE VIBRATION NOISE HEARD WAS THE HEAT SHIELD RATTLING ON THE MUFFLER ITSELF. UPDATED 06/05/12

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DID NOT DUPLICATE OR CONFIRM ANY OF THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT DUE TO THE FAILURE THAT THE WARRANTY WOULD EXPIRE AND THEN HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2003-2006 Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX470, 2005-2006 Toyota Tundra and Sequoia, 2004-2006 Toyota 4Runner and Lexus GX470 vehicles equipped with side curtain-shield-air bags. The affected vehicles have an air bag control module that may be improperly programmed, causing the side curtain-shield-air bags to deploy inadvertently.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the side curtain-shield-air bags deploy unexpectedly, it can increase the risk of occupant injury.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag control module with one that has improved programming, free of charge. The recall began on December 1, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-271-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is G0C and GLB.
