AS I WAS HOLDING IT UPRIGHT AND REACHING TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION VIA THE KEY WITH MY RIGHT HAND, THE ENGINE SPORADICALLY REVVED UP IN RPMS. MY BRAND NEW 2007 KYMCO PEOPLE 150 SCOOTER MALFUNCTIONED WHILE I WAS AT A DEAD STOP. AS I WAS HOLDING IT UPRIGHT AND REACHING TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION VIA THE KEY WITH MY RIGHT HAND, THE ENGINE SPORADICALLY REVVED UP IN RPMS. THIS ENGAGED THE DRIVE TO THE REAR WHEEL AND THE SCOOTER ACCELERATED OUT FROM UNDERNEATH ME. THIS CAUSED THE SCOOTER TO LURCH FORWARD INTO A WALL AT THE PLACE WHERE I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF PARKING IT. AS I TRIED TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE SCOOTER IT CAUSED ME INJURY TO MY HAND WHICH WAS ON THE HANDLEBARS. THE HANDLEBAR AND MY HAND CAME INTO CONTACT WITH THE WALL. THE SCOOTER DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE SCOOTER INSPECTED IT FOR POSSIBLE REASONS OR EXPLANATIONS FOR THE MALFUNCTION AND WERE NOT ABLE TO DETERMINE ITS CAUSE. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING THE SCOOTER REPAIRED. I WILL ALSO FILE THIS MALFUNCTION WITH KYMCO FOR THEIR ADVICE AND THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS. I AM SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE DAMAGE DONE TO THE SCOOTER AS A RESULT OF THIS MALFUNCTION. *TR

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE MANDATORY ENGINE STOP SWITCH ON THE RIGHT HAND HANDLEBAR WAS NOT INSTALLED. THIS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 123, 'MOTORCYCLE CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS.'

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THE OPERATOR WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP THE ENGINE FROM RUNNING BY THE FASTEST MEANS POSSIBLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY OR A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINE STOP SWITCH FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 1, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KYMCO USA CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLL FREE AT 1-888-235-3417.
