I BOUGHT MY LIBERTY WHEN IT WAS A YEAR OLD FROM A DEALER. ONE MONTH LATER, THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW FELL INTO THE DOOR. IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, THE DEALER FIXED IT WITH NEW PARTS. A YEAR AGO IN JUNE 2012 THE REAR WINDOW DROPPED INTO THE DOOR. THE REAR WINDOWS ARE NEVER EVEN USED. I HAD TO PAY A MECHANIC TO RAISE IT UP AND HOLD IT UP WITH DUCK TAPE BECAUSE THE REGULATOR AND REPAIR IS GOING TO COST OVER $400.00!!THE WINDOW WOULD SLOWLY START TO DROP BEFORE IT FINALLY WENT INTO THE DOOR COMPLETELY WHEN I WAS DRIVING AND THE NOISE FROM THE OUTSIDE WAS SO LOUD I THOUGHT I WAS HAVING A FLAT TIRE AND HAD TO PULL OVER. NOT TO MENTION THE CONSTANT ATTENTION I HAD TO PAY TO MAKE SURE THE WINDOW WAS STILL BEING HELD UP WITH THE AWFUL LOOKING DUCT TAPE! SO ANGRY AND DISAPPOINTED WITH CHRYSLER. I READ ONLINE OF SO MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. I COULD NEVER RISK PUTTING A CHILD BACK THERE BECAUSE OF THIS RISKY PROBLEM. THIS IS A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE FUEL ISSUE THAT I HAVE SEEN ON HERE ALREADY.WHEN I GO TO PUT FUEL INTO THE GAS TANK, IT WILL NOT STOP AT THE END AS IT'S FILLING UP. IT JUST OVERFLOWS. I WOULD SAY AT LEAST A FEW CUPS OF FUEL FLOWS DOWN THE SIDE OF THE JEEP AND DOWN INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE AND WHEEL WELL. I KNOW THAT AT SOME POINT IT WILL LEAD TO RUST/CORROSION AMONG MANY OTHER ISSUES. I REALLY WISH THIS COULD BE LOOKED AT AND POSSIBLY FIXED BY MANUFACTURER. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE, WITH NO HELP FROM THE MANUFACTURER. I ALSO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS AS OTHERS WITH THE WINDOWS. THE REGULATOR HAS A PIECE THAT BREAKS AND THEN THE WHOLE REGULATOR HAS TO BE REPLACED. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES ALREADY ON DIFFERENT WINDOWS. LASTLY, I JUST RECENTLY HAD AN ISSUE WHERE THE JEEP WOULDN'T START. THE CONSOLE LIGHTS AND GUAGES WORK FINE AND IT ACTED LIKE ALL WAS WELL, BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T TURN OVER WHEN THE KEY WAS TURNED. THE RESULT WAS THE IGNITION SWITCH ACTUATOR PIN. IT HAS A PIECE THAT BREAKS OFF AND WHEN THAT HAPPENS, THE JEEP WONT BE ABLE START. IT ISN'T AN EASY FIX FOR SOMEONE WHO ISN'T MECHANICALLY CAPABLE. AGAIN, THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT HAS HAPPENED TO MANY PEOPLE AND HONESTLY THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. I COULD COMPLAIN ABOUT MORE, BUT LET'S JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT. *TR

THE DRIVER WINDOW FELL INTO THE DOOR WHEN THE CABLE BROKE THAT MAKES THE WINDOW GO UP AND DOWN. IT IS VERY COLD WHEN THE WINDOW IS OPEN ALL THE TIME, AND IF A PERSON BLOCKS THE OPENING TO KEEP WARM AND NOT LET THE RAIN IN, THEY CANNOT SEE PROPERLY. (SAFETY ISSUE) I HAVE OWNED THE CAR ABOUT 3 YEARS. I BOUGHT IT USED, SO I DON'T KNOW IF THERE WERE PROBLEMS BEFORE. BUT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR ME EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE WINDOW REGULATOR GOES BAD AND THAT IS WHY THE WINDOW DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY AND BROKE THE CABLE. I NOTICED THAT THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. MANY PEOPLE HAVE SPENT ALOT OF MONEY TO KEEP THE WINDOWS WORKING PROPERLY. I SPENT OVER $700 JUST TO KEEP MY DRIVER DOOR WINDOW PROPER AND THIS IS FOR MANY FIXES. I DID NOT BUY THE CAR AT A JEEP DEALERSHIP, SO WHEN I GO IN THERE, THEY ARE NOT REAL INTERESTED IN HELPING ME. PLEASE MAKE THIS ISSUE A RECALL AND HELP PEOPLE TO GET THEIR WINDOWS TO WORK PROPERLY. PLEASE!!! *TR

I OWN A 2007 JEEP LIBERTY SPORT, WITH NO WARRANTY. A FEW MONTHS AGO, THE REAR, DRIVER SIDE WINDOW REGULATOR AND MOTOR WENT BAD AND I HAD TO REPLACE THIS OUT OF POCKET. WHAT IS MORE FRUSTRATING IS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MY DRIVER FRONT WIDOW NOW. SINCE MY LAST REPAIR, LARRY H. MILLER JEEP IN SANDY UTAH HAS INFLATED THE PRICE OF THE PART. THEY ARE VERY AWARE OF THE NEED OF THIS FAULTY PART AND ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CUSTOMERS. I NOW HAVE NO WINDOW (IT IS CRACKED INSIDE MY DOOR AND I AM NOT IN FINANCIAL POSITION TO REPLACE IT). IT IS APPROXIMATELY 30 DEGREES IN MY STATE RIGHT NOW, THIS IS ALMOST UNBEARABLE. I HAVE ALSO OWNED A 2006 JEEP LIBERTY PRIOR TO THIS AND THE REAR DRIVER WINDOW REGULATOR AND MOTOR ALSO WENT OUT. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THIS AT MY COST. THIS MAKES THREE TIMES FOR THE SAME PART! I AM ASKING FOR A RECALL AND FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THIS AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO ME. I FEEL IT IS ALREADY UNFAIR THAT THEY PROVIDE A BAD PART, BUT EVEN WORSE THAT THEY INFLATED THE PRICE PART RECENTLY AND ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CONSUMERS. THIS IS ALSO UNSAFE, I HAVE TO DRIVE WITH A GARBAGE BAG TO MY WINDOW WHICH BLOCKS MY LINE OF SIGHT, BUT IS THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP DRY IN THIS FALL/WINTER WEATHER. PLEASE HELP ME, I AM AT A LOSS RIGHT NOW AND THIS IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. THE DEALERSHIP'S NUMBER FOR WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IS: (866) 653 3505. THANK YOU AGAIN. THANK YOU *TR

DISCOVERED FROM INTERNET RESEARCH THAT PLASTIC PARTS ARE FAULTY AND KNOWN BY CHRYSLER FOR YEARS. YET NO RECALL MADE TO CORRECT THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM. REPLACING WITH SAME PLASTIC PARTS IS NO SOLUTION. MY CONCERN IS SAFETY AND SECURITY. WHY HAVE AN ALARM SYSTEM WHEN ANY OR ALL FOUR WINDOWS ARE PRONE TO FAILURE? STEEL REPLACEMENT PARTS CAN BE PURCHASED ONLINE INDEPENDENTLY, BUT AS A CONSUMER I FEEL CHRYSLER SHOULD BE OBLIGATED TO CORRECT THIS AT NO COST. THIS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. WHY WAIT FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF A CHILD FALLING OUT OF A MOVING VEHICLE. THERE IS NO WARNING. *TR

ODI has completed an extensive analysis of rear crash fuel tank system integrity data for the subject Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and Liberty vehicles (SVs).As of June 2013, ODI knew of 56 post-collision fatal fires, 28 non-fatal fires, and 6 fuel leak incidents (totaling 90 incidents, 75 fatalities and 58 injuries) involving the SVs.Based on this analysis, ODI issued a Recall Request Letter (RRL) on June 3, 2013 requesting that Chrysler recall the Grand Cherokee and Liberty vehicles due to the rate of fatal, non-fatal fire, and fuel leak incidents when compared to peer vehicles (compact and medium SUVs) built during the same time period. In the RRL, ODI described how the location of the aft-mounted fuel tank made the SVs vulnerable to rear impact crash fuel tank failures.During the analysis, besides the high speed/high severity crashes present in both the SV and peer vehicles, ODI observed a significant number of low and moderate speed rear impact crash related fires and leaks, particularly in the Liberty. The data also demonstrated that SVs originally equipped with towing hitch receivers (trailer hitches) appeared to be under-represented in rear-impact related fuel tank failures. In the RRL, ODI requested that Chrysler provide its response by June 18, 2013, otherwise NHTSA might proceed to an Initial Decision that the SVs contain a safety-related defect.Chrysler responded to the RRL on June 4, 2013 and vigorously disputed the tentative findings of the RRL.Among other things, Chrysler argued that the SVs had an overall safety record superior to their peers, met or exceeded all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) and only experienced fires in severe high energy rear impacts.Nonetheless, while continuing to maintain that the SVs did not contain a safety-related defect, Chrysler proposed a recall (13V-252) of approximately 2.5M (1.6M currently registered) model year (MY) 1993 - 1998 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) and MY 2002-2007 Liberty (KJ) vehicles on June 18, 2013.The recall remedy submitted by Chrysler would employ a hitch receiver assembly consisting of a steel cross-member behind the fuel tank with forward-projecting arms bolted to the frame rails on either side of the fuel tank. For the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee, Chrysler indicated it would conduct a customer satisfaction campaign and inspect vehicles equipped with aftermarket tow hitch receivers, and if necessary, replace any such hitch receivers whose conditionmay increase the risk of fuel system failure in rear crashes.Examination of the available data established that the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee did not pose the same magnitude of safety risk as the MY 1993 - 1998 Grand Cherokee and MY 2002-2007 Liberty, particularly in low and moderate speed rear impacts.Because the agency has concluded that the vehicles do not present an unreasonable risk to safety, ODI is closing its investigation of the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee.Although it was not within the scope of the Petition initiating this investigation or the Preliminary Evaluation preceding this EA, ODI also examined the performance of the MY 1993 - 2001 Cherokee as part of this investigation.NHTSA's assessment of the available data for the Cherokee did not establish an unreasonable risk in comparison to peer vehicles.ODI does not approve proposed defect remedies. While offering to install hitch receiver assemblies on the MY 1993-1998 Grand Cherokees and 2002-2007 Liberty, Chrysler did not, in ODI's view, provide enough evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed remedy in rear impacts. The Complete Summary for this Closing Resume (EA12-005) can be seen by

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
