THE WINDOWS IN MY 2006 JEEP LIBERTY KEEP FALLING DOWN INSIDE THE DOOR. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO THREE OF THE FOUR WINDOWS. ONE WINDOW I HAVE HAD IN THE REPAIR SHOP THREE TIMES (DEALERSHIP) TO FIX THE SAME PROBLEM. THE LAST TIME THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED, BUT NOW I CAN'T OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE, WHICH TO ME SEEMS LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE. MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING BACK FROM A TRIP IN THE MIDDLE OF A HEAVY RAIN STORM WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE WINDOW FELL DOWN INSIDE THE DOOR. IT STARTED HAILING WHICH WAS A BIG SAFETY ISSUE FOR OUR CHILDREN RIDING IN THE BACK SEAT. I AM JUST THANKFUL THAT WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT DID NOT HAPPEN. THE DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM OCCURS BECAUSE OF A BAD MOTOR INSIDE THE DOOR PANEL. THE CHEAPEST I HAVE FOUND TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS $300 PER WINDOW. THIS IS RIDICULOUS WHEN THE PROBLEM KEEPS OCCURING!

2006 JEEP LIBERTY. I HAVE HAD THE WINDOW REGULATOR GO OUT IN MY CAR CURRENTLY 5 DIFFERENT TIMES. I AM ALSO CERTAIN THAT MY DRIVER WINDOW IS ABOUT TO GO OUT AGAIN AS I HAVE TO HELP LEAD IT WHEN I PUSH THE UP BOTTOM. I TRY TO USE IT AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE. WHEN THE REGULATORS WHEN OUT THE FIRST THREE TIMES MY CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY SO I TOOK IT IN FOR REPAIR. NOW THAT THEY HAVE BROKEN TWO MORE TIMES, WITHIN TWO WEEKS, I FEEL THAT THIS IS A REAL ISSUE. WHAT CONCERNS ME IS THE SAFETY OF MY CHILDREN WHO ARE IN THE BACK SEAT WHEN THESE BREAK AND THE GLASS FALLS INTO THE DOOR, WHAT IF IT WAS TO BREAK, WHAT IF IT WAS STORMING OUTSIDE. IT CONCERNS ME THAT ONE OF THEM COULD BE INJURED. I AM ALSO CONCERNED THAT WHEN I WENT ONLINE TO DO SOME RESEARCH THERE ARE MANY POST REGARDING THIS SAME ISSUE, ALSO A PETITION PUT FORWARD WITH 114 SIGNATURES ASKING FOR A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE, YET CHRYSLER JEEP HAS YET TO DO ONE. I THINK WE NEED HELP TO GET THIS ITEM RECALLED, HAVE A BETTER PRODUCT INSTALLED IN OUR CARS, AND PROVIDE A SAFE FORM OF TRANSPORTATION FOR OUR FAMILIES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *TR

2006 JEEP LIBERTY LIMITED 4X4, ALL 4 OF THE WINDOWS HAVE HAD REGULATOR FAILURE CAUSING THE WINDOWS TO FALL DOWN INTO THE DOOR. THESE HAVE ALL OCCURRED AT DIFFERENT TIMES AND EVEN WITHOUT ANYONE BEING IN THE VEHICLE. ONE OF THE RECENTLY REPLACED REGULATORS THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN REPAIRED ONCE HAVE FAILED AGAIN WHILE MY WIFE WAS AT WORK. SHE CAME OUT TO LEAVE WORK IN THE DARK AND AS SHE WENT TO DRIVE OFF SHE NOTICED A WINDOW IN THE REAR WAS DOWN. SHE DID NOT PUT IT DOWN IT FAILED AND FELL ON ITS OWN WHILE INSIDE OF HER PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT AGAIN. THIS IS A HAZARD THAT WOULD HAVE ALLOWED SOMEONE TO ENTER HER VEHICLE AND EITHER STEAL FROM THE VEHICLE OR ATTACK HER. SO ALL 4 POWER WINDOWS HAVE FAILED AND NOW THEY ARE STARTING TO FAIL AGAIN. WARRANTY WILL EXPIRE THIS OCTOBER AND WE FEAR WE WILL BE LEFT WITH CONSTANT REPAIRS AND SHE CONSTANTLY WORRIES ABOUT HER SAFETY KNOWING IT WILL MOST LIKELY HAPPEN AGAIN. REAR GATE ALSO HAD A LOUD RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM IT AND AFTER IT WAS SUPPOSEDLY FIXED BY DEALER UNDER WARRANTY WIFE COULD NOT GET THE GATE OPEN TO LOAD GROCERIES. UPON INSPECTION BY ME I FOUND THAT THE CHRYSLER JEEP DEALERSHIP JUST WRAPPED THE GATE LATCH STRIKER WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE LATCH CAUSING THE DOOR LATCH TO BIND AND NOT OPEN. THIS VEHICLE NEEDS TO EITHER BE RECALLED OR ENFORCE A MANDATORY TSB ON A WORKING REVISION OF NEW PARTS. *TR

ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2007, AT APPROXIMATELY 8:30PM BOTH MY HUSBAND AND I GOT IN OUR 2006 JEEP LIBERTY WITH ONLY 9,188 MILES TO DRIVE HOME. UPON TURNING ON THE VEHICLE WE TURNED UP THE AIR CONDITIONER AND HEARD A GRINDING SOUND. UNSURE OF WHAT THE NOISE WAS, MY HUSBAND TURNED DOWN THE AIR FOR A MOMENT. AS HE TURNED THE AIR BACK UP THE BLOWER FAN FELL OUT OF THE DASHBOARD AND INTO THE FOOT AREA OF THE PASSENGER FRONT SEAT WHERE I WAS SITTING. THE BLOWER FAN WAS STILL TURNING AS IT MADE CONTACT WITH MY FEET BECAUSE IT DID NOT DETACH FROM THE ELECTRICAL WIRING. THE BLOWER FAN CONTINUED RUNNING UNTIL MY HUSBAND SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE. DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WAS WEARING SANDALS WHEN THE BLOWER FAN FELL OUT OF THE DASHBOARD MY TOES WERE SEVERELY LACERATED AND SUFFERED ABRASIONS. THESE INJURIES REQUIRED ME TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION. DUE TO THIS INJURY I HAVE HAD TO MISS WORK, AS IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO WEAR SHOES, STAND FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME, OR SIT WITHOUT ELEVATING MY FEET. THIS INCIDENT ALONG WITH OTHER MULTIPLE FAULTY WINDOW COMPONENTS, ALL OF WHICH ARE WARRANTY ITEMS, CAUSE US CONCERN. PARTICULARLY SINCE THE BLOWER FAN WAS A RECALLED PART AND HAD RECENTLY BEEN REPLACED. WE NO LONGER FEEL THAT THIS VEHICLE IS SAFE TO OPERATE AND HAVE CONTACTED CHRYSLER HEADQUARTERS CUSTOMER SERVICE CALL CENTER FOR ASSISTANCE AND ARE AWAITING AN INSPECTION. *TR

ODI has completed an extensive analysis of rear crash fuel tank system integrity data for the subject Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and Liberty vehicles (SVs).As of June 2013, ODI knew of 56 post-collision fatal fires, 28 non-fatal fires, and 6 fuel leak incidents (totaling 90 incidents, 75 fatalities and 58 injuries) involving the SVs.Based on this analysis, ODI issued a Recall Request Letter (RRL) on June 3, 2013 requesting that Chrysler recall the Grand Cherokee and Liberty vehicles due to the rate of fatal, non-fatal fire, and fuel leak incidents when compared to peer vehicles (compact and medium SUVs) built during the same time period. In the RRL, ODI described how the location of the aft-mounted fuel tank made the SVs vulnerable to rear impact crash fuel tank failures.During the analysis, besides the high speed/high severity crashes present in both the SV and peer vehicles, ODI observed a significant number of low and moderate speed rear impact crash related fires and leaks, particularly in the Liberty. The data also demonstrated that SVs originally equipped with towing hitch receivers (trailer hitches) appeared to be under-represented in rear-impact related fuel tank failures. In the RRL, ODI requested that Chrysler provide its response by June 18, 2013, otherwise NHTSA might proceed to an Initial Decision that the SVs contain a safety-related defect.Chrysler responded to the RRL on June 4, 2013 and vigorously disputed the tentative findings of the RRL.Among other things, Chrysler argued that the SVs had an overall safety record superior to their peers, met or exceeded all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) and only experienced fires in severe high energy rear impacts.Nonetheless, while continuing to maintain that the SVs did not contain a safety-related defect, Chrysler proposed a recall (13V-252) of approximately 2.5M (1.6M currently registered) model year (MY) 1993 - 1998 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) and MY 2002-2007 Liberty (KJ) vehicles on June 18, 2013.The recall remedy submitted by Chrysler would employ a hitch receiver assembly consisting of a steel cross-member behind the fuel tank with forward-projecting arms bolted to the frame rails on either side of the fuel tank. For the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee, Chrysler indicated it would conduct a customer satisfaction campaign and inspect vehicles equipped with aftermarket tow hitch receivers, and if necessary, replace any such hitch receivers whose conditionmay increase the risk of fuel system failure in rear crashes.Examination of the available data established that the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee did not pose the same magnitude of safety risk as the MY 1993 - 1998 Grand Cherokee and MY 2002-2007 Liberty, particularly in low and moderate speed rear impacts.Because the agency has concluded that the vehicles do not present an unreasonable risk to safety, ODI is closing its investigation of the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee.Although it was not within the scope of the Petition initiating this investigation or the Preliminary Evaluation preceding this EA, ODI also examined the performance of the MY 1993 - 2001 Cherokee as part of this investigation.NHTSA's assessment of the available data for the Cherokee did not establish an unreasonable risk in comparison to peer vehicles.ODI does not approve proposed defect remedies. While offering to install hitch receiver assemblies on the MY 1993-1998 Grand Cherokees and 2002-2007 Liberty, Chrysler did not, in ODI's view, provide enough evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed remedy in rear impacts. The Complete Summary for this Closing Resume (EA12-005) can be seen by

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
