I WAS GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I HAD NO POWER. IT WAS LIKE I TURNED THE CAR OFF. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND RESTART IT. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SENSE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN MAY OF 2011. WHEN THIS DOES HAPPEN I HAVE NO POWER, NO DASH LIGHTS, NO NOTHING. *TR

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND GO OFF..I WAS DRIVING AROUND 60 MPH THE CAR SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND LOST POWER...I WAS ABLE TO STEER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BUT I WAS IN THREE LANES WIDE OF TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAD I NOT BEEN IN THE LANE CLOSED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I COULD HAVE BEEN BADLY INJURED. WITHIN THE TIME FRAME OF THREE WEEKS IT HAPPENED 4 TIMES...ALL WHEN I WAS DRIVING HIGHWAY SPEEDS EXCEPT ONCE THE CAR SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL ON ITS OWN AND POWERED DOWN WHEN I WAS AT A STOP SIGN IN TOWN. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS COMES AND GOES SO FAST BY THE TIME I CAN GET TO A REPAIR SHOP AND HAVE IT SCANNED ITS USUALLY OFF. I WAS ABLE TO SCAN IT ONCE AND IT READ A CODE FOR "TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE"...THE CAR RUNS GREAT BUT I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY IT JUST POWERS DOWN. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO GET INJURED FROM THIS FAILURE BEFORE SOMEONE FIXES IT! THIS IS ABSURD! *TR

EXHAUST MANIFOLDS LEAK, POTENTIALLY INTRODUCING EXHAUST GASES, INCLUDING CARBON MONOXIDE, INTO THE PASSENGER AREA. I INITIALLY TOOK MY VEHICLE TO LITHIA DODGE IN SANTA FE, NM TO REPORT AN EXHAUST LEAK THAT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE AND WAS TO BE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. THEY ONLY REPAIRED THE PASSENGER SIDE WITHOUT APPARENTLY PERFORMING A LEAK CHECK. THE FIX FOR THIS IS TO REPLACE THE OEM GASKET WITH ONE THAT INCORPORATES METAL TO APPARENTLY COMPENSATE FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE DISSIMILAR METALS OF THE HEAD/EXHAUST MANIFOLD. SINCE THERE IS A DEFECT, THE GASKETS LEAK, AND THE UNEVEN EXPANSION CAUSES THE BOLTS/STUDS TO BREAK, EXACERBATING THE PROBLEM. AFTER THE REPAIR THE SOUND SEEMED SIMILAR BUT I ASSUMED IT MUST BE INJECTOR OR VALVE/LIFTER NOISE. RECENTLY I HAD MY TRANSMISSION SERVICED BY A LOCAL SHOP AND THEY NOTED THAT I HAD AN EXHAUST LEAK. AGAIN I LISTENED AND IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS COMING FROM PASSENGER SIDE. THIS TIME WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE MECHANIC PERFORMED AN INSPECTION AND FOUND THE DRIVER'S SIDE TO BE LEAKING. AGAIN HE ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE THE OEM GASKET WITH THE UPGRADED GASKET, BUT IN THE PROCESS BROKE A STUD OFF IN THE HEAD AND WAS UNABLE TO REPAIR WITHOUT EXCESS EXPENSE, NOW NOT UNDER WARRANTY, OF COURSE. THE SERVICE MANAGER ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE OTHER SIDE WAS LEAKING AND THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPAIR IT, BUT THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS NOT LEAKING. IT'S OBVIOUS THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS THERE IS A DEFECT, SINCE THEY ISSUED AN UPGRADED GASKET. THESE VEHICLES WITH THE 4.7L V8 SHOULD BE RECALLED AND THE PROPER GASKET INSTALLED. I HAVE READ ON VARIOUS FORUMS ONLINE THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE 4.7L V8 IN CHRYSLER PRODUCTS. DRIVING APPROX 50 MPH, THE JEEP QUIT, NO WARNING SIGNS, NO POWER STEERING. MOMENTUM GOT ME OFF THE ROAD. DEALERSHIP WASN'T ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS HAPPENED IN MARCH 2011. SEPT 2011 I WAS PASSING A TRANSIT BUS ON THE WAY TO WORK AND AS I STARTED TO PULL BACK INTO MY OWN LANE THE JEEP QUIT AGAIN. NO WARNINGS, IT JUST QUIT. I HAD TO COAST INTO THE FRONT YARD OF SOMEONES HOUSE BECAUSE I HAD NO STEERING. I SAT FOR A FEW MINUTES, STARTED IT UP AND DROVE BACK HOME. THE ONBOARD DIAGNOSTICS LIGHT, ESP, BAS AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS WERE ON. FROM THAT POINT THE JEEP WAS RUNNING VERY BADLY. DEALER HAD MY JEEP FOR 6 DAYS AND SAID IT WAS A MAP SENSOR ON THE MANIFOLD. GOT THE JEEP BACK AND BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, IT QUIT. A COUPLE TRIES AND IT RESTARTED. I'M VERY UPSET THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS PUT ME IN HARMS WAY ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. I COULDN'T IMAGINE DRIVING ON A TWISTING STEEP ROAD AND HAVING IT QUIT. I'M LUCKY I WASN'T KILLED THE DAY I WAS PASSING THE BUS. I'M NOT CONVINCED THE MAP SENSOR IS THE PROBLEM AND I DON'T TRUST THIS VEHICLE. I DRIVE A LOT AND TRANSPORT MY KIDS. WE ARE ALL IN DANGER IN THIS VEHICLE. MAINLY BECAUSE, IT GIVES YOU ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING THAT IT'S GOING TO QUIT, IT JUST SHUTS DOWN AS IF I SHUT THE KEY OFF. I HAVE ONLY THE IGNITION KEY ON THE KEYRING SO I KNOW IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HEAVY KEYS PULLING ON THE IGNITION SWITCH. I AM NOT THE ONLY COMPLAINT, THEY ARE ALL OVER THE WEB, IT IS AN ISSUE AND SOMEONE NEEDS TO ADDRESS IT. THIS VEHICLE HAS BECOME DANGEROUS. *TR

WHILE ACCELERATING ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ONTO HIGHWAY VEHICLE LOSES ALL POWER AND TRANSMISSIONS SEEMS TO DISENGAGE AND ONLY COASTS. CAR ACTS LIKE IF I SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL BUT GEAR SELECTED IS STILL DRIVE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES AND ENGINE RESPONDS TO ACCELERATION BUT NO MOVEMENT IS GIVEN BY TRANSMISSION. RPM GAUGE GOES ALL THE WAY DOWN TO IDLE. HAD TO PULL OVER THE SIDE OF THE ROAD PLACE IN PARK, SHUT ENGINE OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE THEN CONTINUE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS AND FRIGHTENING SITUATION, ALL POWER IS LOST AND NO CONTROL OF ACCELERATION IS GIVEN. THIS IS THE 5TH TIME IN A YEAR TIME SPAN, THIS HAS HAPPENED. STARTED AT ABOUT 50000 MILES. THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED REAR END COLLISIONS AS WELL, PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS MATTER. I CANNOT IMAGINE WHAT OTHER LESS SKILLED DRIVERS DO ESPECIALLY CARRYING CHILDREN OR PETS VERY DANGEROUS, NEEDS A RECALL OR SB.

Jul 21, 2014

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

May 7, 2013

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

Chrysler is conducting a safety recall of approximately 643,618 model year 2006-2007 Jeep Commander and model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles to address the problem of ignition turning off while driving (see NHTSA recall 14V-438 for more information).According to Chrysler, these vehicles may experience an unintended change in ignition switch position while driving, which may result in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash and disabling one or more of the vehicle's safety features including the frontal air bags. Most of the reported incidents occurred as a result of driver interaction with the ignition key.Based on the recall action taken by Chrysler, this Preliminary Evaluation is closed.Additionalinformation on this closing resume, and the investigation are in the PE14-017 public file available online at SaferCar.gov.The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers: 10101116 10103300 10106060 10112589 10116788 10126986 10128093 10130780 10145501 10146213 10153018 10155291 10156396 10158165 10162933 10166746 10178559 10183305 10186545 10189530 10192237 10193106 10194092 10199552 10199986 10221500 10222283 10227253 10231011 10328609 10358324 10392364 10577532 10585326 10585976 10599142 10604990 10605091 10605209 10606494 10606610 10607043 10607614 10607785 10608196 10615565 10615671 10615761 10616124 10633266 10633313 10633724 10639371 10640010 10644827 10652526 10653000 10653382 10654009 10654139 10654809 10655095 10659448 10662220 10662703

AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit

Opened Nov 18, 2010 · Closed Dec 28, 2015

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Unknown Or Other

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
