N23 RECALL WAS PERFORMED TO KEEP TRANSFER CASE FROM SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL CAUSED BY CRACKED CIRCUIT BOARD. THE "FIX" TO THIS WAS TO FLASH THE SOFTWARE TO MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE JEEP TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL AND 4WD LOW. NOW EVERY VEHICLE THAT HAS HAD THIS RECALL DONE IS UNABLE TO TOW THEIR VEHICLE BEHIND A CAMPER BECAUSE THE TRANSFER CASE CAN NOT SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, AND 4WD LOW IS INOPERABLE AS WELL. CHRYSLER HAS CLAIMED THAT THE N23 RECALL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ALL OF THESE VEHICLES LOSING 4WD LOW EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE THAT HAS HAD THIS RECALL DONE HAS LOST NEUTRAL AND 4 LO. THIS CHEAP FIX HAS LEFT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON THESE EXPENSIVE VEHICLES WITHOUT THE BEST FEATURE OF THE VEHICLE, 4 LO. MOST PEOPLE BUY THESE JEEPS BECAUSE OF THEIR 4WD CAPABILITY. RESALE ON A VEHICLE LIKE THIS HAS GONE RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW WITH THE LOSS OF THIS FEATURE. HTTP://WWW.JEEPFORUM.COM/FORUM/F67/N23-RECALL-ISSUE-NO-4-LOW-1561787/ THIS SITE HAS AN OUTSTANDING NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DENY THAT CHRYSLER HAS NEGLECTED TO TAKE CARE OF THE ISSUE. *TR

AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF BLINKING AND GOING DARK, EVERYTHING BEGINS TO WORK AGAIN, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. THIS EXACT SCENARIO HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. USUALLY THE LIGHT WILL STAY ON FROM ANYWHERE BETWEEN 1-5 DAYS AND THEN GO AWAY. I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE FOR OVER A YEAR. IN ONCE INSTANCE, I WAS DRIVING AROUND THE CITY GOING 10-15 MPH AND THIS SCENARIO HAPPENED AND THE BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND THE CAR WAS VERY HARD TO TURN. EVERYTIME I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER THEY TRY TO PULL A CODE AND NOTHING IS AVAILABLE FOR THEM. AT THIS POINT I AM FED UP SO I AM OFFICIALLY REPORTING THE ISSUE. IT IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO BE DRIVING WHEN THIS HAPPENS, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE ON THE HIGHWAY. LET'S HOPE SOMETHING IS OFFICIALLY DONE BEFORE ANYONE GETS HURT. *TR

MY PREGNANT WIFE HAS HAD THIS ISSUE BEFORE WITH THE CAR AND WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WITHOUT ANYONE BEING ABLE TO FIX IT. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 15-60 MPH THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN. NO POWER STEERING, BRAKES, OR ELECTRICAL. YOU HAVE TO THROW IT IN NEUTRAL AND START IT BACK UP. THIS HAS TO BE AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE AS OTHER QUIRKY THINGS HAVE BEEN HAPPENING AS WELL SUCH AS THE HEADLIGHTS WILL FLICKER ON AND OFF AND THE VOLUME AND STATIONS SELECTORS ON THE STEERWHEEL OFTEN DO NOT WORK PROPERLY. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT JEEP NEEDS TO IDENTIFY AND FIX. VERY SCARY TO BE GOING 50-60 MPH AND LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR CAR GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. OVER THE PAST TWO DAYS THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ONLINE AS WELL AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER JEEP OWNERS THAT HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE. JEEP NEEDS TO HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. I AM SHOCKED THAT THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED YET. *TR

Official recalls
4Jul 21, 2014
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.
May 7, 2013
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

Chrysler is conducting a safety recall of approximately 643,618 model year 2006-2007 Jeep Commander and model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles to address the problem of ignition turning off while driving (see NHTSA recall 14V-438 for more information).According to Chrysler, these vehicles may experience an unintended change in ignition switch position while driving, which may result in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash and disabling one or more of the vehicle's safety features including the frontal air bags. Most of the reported incidents occurred as a result of driver interaction with the ignition key.Based on the recall action taken by Chrysler, this Preliminary Evaluation is closed.Additionalinformation on this closing resume, and the investigation are in the PE14-017 public file available online at SaferCar.gov.The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers: 10101116 10103300 10106060 10112589 10116788 10126986 10128093 10130780 10145501 10146213 10153018 10155291 10156396 10158165 10162933 10166746 10178559 10183305 10186545 10189530 10192237 10193106 10194092 10199552 10199986 10221500 10222283 10227253 10231011 10328609 10358324 10392364 10577532 10585326 10585976 10599142 10604990 10605091 10605209 10606494 10606610 10607043 10607614 10607785 10608196 10615565 10615671 10615761 10616124 10633266 10633313 10633724 10639371 10640010 10644827 10652526 10653000 10653382 10654009 10654139 10654809 10655095 10659448 10662220 10662703

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
