THE DASH LIGHTS STARTED FLICKERING, THEN THE BRAKES LOCKED UP AND THE JEEP JUST LOST POWER AND TURNED OFF. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE JEEP'S BRAKES LOCKED UP AND LOST POWER AND THIS IS ENOUGH TO CAUSE ALARM AND RESULTED WITH THIS COMPLAINT. I WILL NOT WAIT FOR A SECOND TIME THAT THE VEHICLE'S BRAKES LOCK UP AND TURNS ITSELF OFF AT A MORE DANGEROUS HIGHWAY SITUATION ON A BUSY TRAFFIC AND CERTAINLY NOT PUTTING MY FAMILY AT THIS TYPE OF RISK WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. [XXX], A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE FROM JEEP THAT I HAVE SPOKEN TO ADVISED THAT CHRYSLER COULD POSSIBLY ISSUE A RECALL IF ENOUGH NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS WERE RECEIVED FROM NHTSA. AM I REALLY SUPPOSED TO WAIT UNTIL MY FAMILY GETS INJURED BEFORE SOMETHING GETS DONE WITH THIS KNOWN ISSUE? THE DASH LIGHTS/GAUGES ISSUE HAS BEEN ONGOING AND JEEP HAD BEEN CONTACTED A FEW YEARS BACK TO NO AVAIL. I ALSO ADVISED [XXX] (JEEP REP) ABOUT ALL FOUR HANDLES BREAKING AT THE SAME TIME. I HAD TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE TO LET MY DAUGHTER AND HER FRIEND GET OUT OF THE BACKSEAT. THESE HANDLES SHOULD NOT BREAK AT ALL DUE TO IT'S NORMAL USE AND PURPOSE. I REQUEST YOUR DEPARTMENT TO PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, AND AVOID ANY INJURIES THAT THIS DEFECT COULD CAUSE. THANK YOU. I HAVE A JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE (2006). OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS, IT HAS INTERMITTENTLY HAD PROBLEMS. SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING AND AFTER STARTUP. THESE PROBLEMS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LOSS OF GAUGES, FLASHING LIGHTS IN DASH, WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE TRACTION CONTROL OR BRAKES KICKING IN AND THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING? WHEN THIS FIRST STARTED HAPPENING I THOUGHT MAYBE THE COMPUTER HAD BEEN VIBRATED OR JOSTLED AND HAD A GLITCH. OVER TIME IT WOULD GO AWAY AND 6 MONTHS OR SO LATER HAPPEN AGAIN! I HAVE DONE EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING, IE CHANGING PARTS AND TROUBLE SHOOTING THE PROBLEMS TO NO AVAIL. I THOUGHT I HAD THIS NARROWED DOWN TO A RUSTED CONNECTION FROM A GROUND WIRE CONNECTED TO THE BLOCK.....WRONG AGAIN! THIS MORNING I HAD MY 4 YEAR OLD SON IN THE JEEP AND WAS TAKING A LEFT AT A BUSY INTERSECTION. I CLEARLY HAD ENOUGH TIME TO MAKE THE TURN, BUT AS I WAS TURNING IT SOUNDED LIKE MY ANTI LOCK BRAKES WERE KICKING IN MID TURN WITH A CAR COMING RIGHT AT US! I MADE THE TURN PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. ALL MY GAUGES WERE DEAD, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND ONLY THE GEAR SELECTOR WAS VISIBLE. I HAVE READ ON MANY JEEP RELATED FORUMS, THAT THIS IS NOT ONLY HAPPENING TO MY JEEP BUT MANY OTHERS! WHILE READING I HAVE NOTICED ONE THING. IN MANY CASES THESE PROBLEMS WERE SOLVED BY REPLACING THE IGNITION SWITCH! AFTER READING THIS I FURTHER RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AGAINST RECALLS. I FOUND THAT, ACCORDING TO THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, NY TIMES, USA TODAY AND FORBES, CHRYSLER IS ALLEGEDLY RECALLING THESE VEHICLES WITH FAULTY IGNITION SWITCHES. SO I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER. THEY LOOKED MY JEEP UP IN THEIR DATABASE AND TOLD ME THEY'RE WERE NO RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE AND THAT THEY HAVEN'T RECALLED ANY VEHICLES FOR FAULTY IGNITION SWITCHES. I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF THE NHTSA COULD HELP WITH SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS AND ANSWER SOME OF THESE QUESTION I AND MANY OTHERS HAVE. *TR

CHRYSLER ISSUED A N23 RECALL NOTICE DUE TO CRACKING CIRCUIT BOARDS IN THE TRANSFER CASE ACTUATOR (VEHICLE MAY INADVERTENTLY SHIFT IN TO NEUTRAL). PRIOR TO THE APPLICATION OF THIS RECALL MY VEHICLE WAS CAPABLE OF ENGAGING 4LO. AFTERWARDS (IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS IN THE DEALERSHIP PARKING LOT) THE TRANSFER CASE WOULD NOT SHIFT. EACH ATTEMPT WOULD RESULT IN A "SERVICE 4XD SYSTEM" AND WOULD TRIGGER A C140F TROUBLE CODE. CHRYSLER REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE RECALL FLASH TO BE THE ISSUE. FROM JEEP FORUMS I HAVE FOUND MYSELF TO BE ONE OF HUNDREDS IF NOT MORE THAT ENCOUNTERED THIS ISSUE. THIS RECALL IS IN ESSENCE A SOFTWARE WORK-AROUND FOR A HARDWARE ISSUE. THIS RECALL IS OBVIOUSLY A CHEAP ATTEMPT AT FIXING A COSTLY ISSUE OF REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE ACTUATORS WITH NEW. AS A CONSUMER I EXPECT THE MANUFACTURER TO FIX POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ISSUES (SUCH AS WHAT N23 ATTEMPTS TO DO). HOWEVER, IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN DOING SO TO DAMAGE THE VEHICLE FURTHER OR RENDER SYSTEMS INOPERABLE. *TR

ON AT LEAST 5 SEPARATE OCCASIONS SINCE ABOUT 2009, MY 2006 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE HAS SUDDENLY AND LOST POWER AND CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20-40 MILES PER HOUR. THERE IS NO REASON THAT I CAN CONFIRM CAUSES THIS AND I'M NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE DEFECT. I'VE REPORTED IT TO PEARSON (DEALER) AND THEY INDICATED THEY CAN'T HELP WITH AN ISSUE THAT CAN'T BE DEMONSTRATED OR DUPLICATED. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO LOSE ALL POWER, EVEN AT LOWER SPEEDS. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED TO FIND THE ROOT CAUSE. I CAN CONFIRM THAT IT DEFINITELY OCCURS. IN ADDITION, IT'S REPORTED THAT STARTING A JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE MAY RESULT IN SUDDEN, UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION OR MOVEMENT FORWARD, EVEN WHEN IN PARK. CAR POOL AUTO WASH PUSHES EVERY JEEP PRODUCT OUT OF THE WASH TUNNEL BY HAND TO AVOID STARTING THE VEHICLE FOR THIS REASON THEY EXPLAINED. WHILE SUDDEN ACCELERATION HAS NEVER OCCURRED TO ME, THERE APPEARS TO BE ENOUGH EVIDENCE THIS MAY WARRANT FURTHER INVESTIGATION. *TR

I WAS DRIVING EAST ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE FROM PITTSBURGH, PA TO YORK, PA WITH MY WIFE AND 1 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER ON THE FRIDAY OF MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. I WAS DRIVING BETWEEN 70-75 MPH IN THE LEFT HAND LANE WHEN I NOTICED I HAD LOST ACCELERATION, POWER STEERING, AND ALL OF MY INTERIOR LIGHTS HAD TURNED OFF. THE ENTIRE VEHICLE HAD SHUT OFF. THIS EASILY COULD HAVE CAUSED A HORRIFIC ACCIDENT AS THERE WAS A TON OF TRAFFIC BEHIND ME AND ON THE ROAD. FORTUNATELY, I WAS GOING DOWN A HILL AND I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN SPEED FOR ENOUGH TIME TO SAFELY DRIFT MY CAR INTO THE RIGHT LANE AND EVENTUALLY OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. ONCE PULLED OVER, I HAD DIFFICULTY SHIFTING MY VEHICLE INTO PARK AND TURNING OFF THE IGNITION. AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF ATTEMPTING TO SHUT IT OFF, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION. I WAITED ABOUT 5 OR SO MINUTES AND WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE WITHOUT A PROBLEM. I STAYED IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE THE REST OF THE TRIP AND EVENTUALLY MADE IT TO MY DESTINATION SAFELY. WHEN I GOT HOME, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THREE RIVERS CHRYSLER JEEP AND DODGE IN PITTSBURGH, PA. .I WAS TOLD I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THE "WIRE CONTROL MODULE". WITH ALL OF THE RECALLS IN THE NEWS REGARDING CHRYSLER AND GM IGNITION SWITCHES, I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF THIS WAS A DEFECT IN JEEP AS WELL. THE EXPERIENCE I HAD WAS VERY FRIGHTENING AND I HOPE OTHERS DO NOT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. *TR

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit

Opened Nov 18, 2010 · Closed Dec 28, 2015

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Unknown Or Other

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
