2012 JEEP COMPASS CHECK BALL ISSUE I HAVE A 2012 JEEP COMPASS WITH 59,000 MILES ON IT. DURING A FUEL STOP TWO WEEKS AGO, I DISCOVERED THE NOZZLE WOULD SHUT OFF AFTER FUELING FOR A FEW SECONDS. TO ENSURE IT WASN'T THE NOZZLE AT THE FUEL PUMP, I TRIED 3 OTHER PUMPS AT DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS. SO, I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET A DIAGNOSIS. THE MECHANIC SAID THE CHECK BALL VALVE IN THE FUEL TANK IS STUCK AND THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE THIS ISSUE REPAIRED IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK. THE TOTAL COST WITH THE NEW FUEL TANK AND LABOR WILL BE $1,600. JUST TO HAVE A SECOND OPINION, I TOOK IT TO A WELL RESPECTED LOCAL MECHANIC IN MY TOWN AND HE TOLD ME THE SAME THING. I KNOW THE SMALLER JEEPS, LIKE THE COMPASS, HAVE HAD FUEL TANK RECALLS IN THE PAST BECAUSE OF VENTILATION ISSUES AND THE ROLL OVER VALVES. THERE WERE A LOT OF PEOPLE ON JEEP FORUMS COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS. SOME FOLKS WERE ELIGIBLE FOR RECALLS AND SOME WERE NOT. THE OTHER FUEL TANK ISSUE I READ ABOUT WAS THE ISSUE I AM HAVING WITH THE CHECK BALL BEING STUCK AND HAVING TO PAY FOR A NEW FUEL TANK. PERSONALLY, I THINK IT IS RIDICULOUS AND I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE, THAT A PERSON HAS TO PAY TO HAVE AN ENTIRE NEW FUEL TANK INSTALLED BECAUSE A COMPANY IS MANUFACTURING VEHICLES WITH DEFECTIVE FUEL TANKS. SO, WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DRIVE A HUNDRED MILES AND THE NEW FUEL TANK CHECK BALL GETS STUCK? DO I HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE MECHANIC, PAY $1,600 AND HAVE THIS PERSON INSTALL A NEW TANK EVERY TIME THE CHECK BALL GETS STUCK? IT'S SENSELESS THAT THE CONSUMER HAS TO WORRY ABOUT A VEHICLE'S UNRELIABILITY BECAUSE OF A MANUFACTURER'S FLAW AND THE COMPANY NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I CALLED JEEP CORPORATE AND THEY SAID THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO HELP ME. I WANTED TO LET THE NHTSA KNOW THAT THE FCA CAR COMPANY IS CONTINUING TO SEND FLAWED PRODUCTS OUT THE DOORS OF THEIR FACTORIES AND IGNORING THE ISSUE.

I HAD THE RECALL PROCEDURE COMPLETED BUT I DID NOT TAKE ANY LONG TRIPS UNTIL THE DAY THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE JEEP RECALL SPECIALIST TOLD ME TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. THE DEALER TOLD ME IF THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG IT WOULD COST $99 FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. I ASKED IF THEY WOULD REMOVE THE FUEL TANK TO CHECK THE HOSE AND THEY SAID NO I DID NOT LEAVE THE CAR BECAUSE I DIDN'T THINK THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM, OR DUPLICATE IT. I CALLED JEEP AGAIN; THEY CALLED THE DEALER WHILE I WAS ON THE LINE AND ASKED THEM TO LOOK AT THE CAR AGAIN. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK I WAS TOLD THE SAME THING; THAT IF THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM IT WOULD COST ME $99. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot, Compass and Dodge Avenger vehicles. The Occupant Restraint Control (OCR) module may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying in the event of a crash.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the OCR, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners that parts are not available yet were mailed on October 26, 2016. The recall began on August 15, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S61.

The affected vehicles have a software error which may result in a delayed deployment or non-deployment of the seatbelt pre-tensioners and/or side airbags.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: In the event of a rollover necessitating airbag deployment, the software error can lead to a delayed deployment or non-deployment of the side curtain airbag and/or seatbelt pre-tensioners. As a result, vehicle occupants have an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will correct the software free of charge. The recall began June 21, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall number is N01.

Due to an incorrectly manufactured transfer tube, the transfer of fuel from the secondary side to the primary side of the fuel tank may be interrupted, causing the engine to stall.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the engine stalls while driving it may increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank transfer tube free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on May 30, 2013. Owners were notified by Chrysler on July 19, 2013, that parts are now available. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N17.

Attorneys representing the responding complainant provided a synopsis that indicated they had experienced prior neck-related injuries dating to the mid-1990s.ODI also contacted one hundred (100) consumers who submitted Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) in an attempt to validate alleged injuries. FCA’s IR response data identified approximately 7.5 million subject vehicles (with approximately 15 million AHR assemblies).Due to the large number of vehicles and failure reports, ODI focused its analysis on the FCA vehicle model with the highest failure rate to represent the worst-case scenario.For this purpose, ODI focused on MY 2012-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles for its analysis.This population includes 710,890 vehicles that FCA manufactured between August 19, 2011, and August 8, 2015.ODI identified 2,839 alleged AHR failures within this limited population.ODI identified 263 alleged injuries that were caused by AHR failures in MY 2012-2015 Grand Cherokees vehicles.Of these alleged injuries, ODI categorized them as eighty-two (82) soft tissue (neck/whiplash, bruise) injuries, four (4) concussions, fifty-nine (59) headaches, and one hundred eighteen (118) without a specific injury description.Although complainants have alleged injuries, ODI has been unable to obtain evidence to substantiate or validate any injuries where medical treatment was required.Consumer outreach was conducted by ODI, where sixty-three (63) FCA complainants with alleged injuries were contacted.Twelve of the sixty-three FCA consumers responded and were interviewed by ODI.ODI requested medical records, however, only one response was provided. Attorneys representing the responding complainant provided a synopsis that indicated they had experienced prior neck-related injuries dating to the mid-1990s.ODI also contacted one hundred (100) consumers who submitted Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) in an attempt to validate alleged injuries. Despite the efforts of ODI, the office has been unsuccessful at obtaining substantive documentation/evidence supporting complaints that allege serious injuries (where pre-existing medical conditions did not already exist). In addition to the low severity of alleged injuries caused by AHR deployments, there have been eleven alleged crashes and two alleged lane departures within the entire subject vehicle population that has been in the field up to sixteen years (with over 8,500 AHR inadvertent deployments).ODI was not able to validate that the alleged crashes were the result of inadvertent head rest deployments, and the crashes were minor in nature. ODI has conducted a thorough investigation of the alleged safety defect and with up to sixteen years of exposure for some vehicles and over 8,500 inadvertent AHR deployments, no serious crashes or injuries could be validated in the sub-population of focus.The lack of serious injuries validated by ODI with such large period of field exposure is consistent with thework done by NHTSA’s Human Injury Research Division and the Biodynamic Research Corporation, which support that an inadvertent AHR deployment is not likely to cause serious injury.In addition to the low risk of injury, FCA released an extended warranty program that covers inadvertent AHR deployment for ten years / unlimited mileage from the vehicle's in-service date. PE19014 is closed with the FCA extended warranty program.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist, and the Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
