MEANING IF THE ROCK CAT HIT IT IT WOULD BE PUSHED IN TOWARDS THE VEHICLE. SINCE IT WAS PUSHED UP BELIEVE ME TO THINK THE ENGINE MAY HAVE MISFIRED OR SOME KIND PRESSURE WAS IN THE VEHICLE THAT NEEDED TO BE RELEASED. MY TRUCK IS NOW IN JEEP BEING INVESTIGATED BUY JEEP TO SEE IF IT'S SOMETHING THAT THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHICH THEY ARE. BUT I KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO TRY AND PUT IT ON MY INSURANCE AND THEN WE ARE GOING TO HAVE BIG PROBLEMS.

2014 JEEP CHEROKEE DEFECTIVE TRANSMISION PROBLEM - ON JULY 31, 2015 I WAS STOPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. WHEN THE TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME MOVED I PLACED MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR; BUT THE CAR DID NOT MOVE. THE CAR STALLED/DIED WHILE IN DRIVE. I NOTICED THAT SEVERAL INDICATOR LIGHTS WENT ON THE PARKING BRAKE INDICATOR AND WHAT I BELIEVE IS THE SLIP INDICATOR OR STABILITY CONTROL INDICATOR. THE LITTLE GREEN INDICATOR LIGHT NEXT TO THE DRIVE POSITION OF THE GEAR SHIFT WAS ALSO BLINKING ON AND OFF. THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE STALLED/DIED WHILE IN MOTION. SEVERAL PREVIOUS TIMES THE SAME THING OCCURRED, ONCE WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND ONCE WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. DURING THIS MOST RECENT INCIDENT MY VEHICLE WAS ALMOST STRUCK BY OTHER MOVING TRAFFIC. MY WIFE WAS ALSO ALMOST STRUCK BY MOVING VEHICLE TRAFFIC WHEN THE CAR STALLED/DIED WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING IT. PRIOR TO THESE INCIDENTS WE HAD TROUBLE WITH OUR JEEP CHEROKEE SHIFTING HARD. RECENTLY WE LEARNED THAT SINCE THE 2014 JEEP WAS PUT ONTO THE MARKET THERE WERE REPORTS OF SIMILAR INCIDENTS WHICH HAS BEEN TRACED TO DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION IN THE 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE. WE WERE NEVER TOLD ABOUT THIS DEFECT WITH THE TRANSMISSION WHEN WE LEASED OUR CHEROKEE IN AUGUST 2014 - EVEN THOUGH THE DEALER WAS OBVIOUSLY WELL AWARE OF THE DEFECT. MY WIFE AND I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SAFETY PROBLEM AND IT IS A MIRACLE THAT WE WERE NOT INJURED IN THE ABOVE INCIDENTS.

SHIFT FROM REVERSE TO PARK OR PARK TO REVERSE CAN EXPERIENCE FORWARD LUNGING. PRESSING THE GAS, OR EVEN ATTEMPTING RAPID SPEED INCREASE, CAN RESULT IN AN UNRESPONSIVE VEHICLE - NO MOVEMENT FORWARD, HIGH REVS AND SIGNIFICANT RPMS. AFTER SEVERAL SECONDS A RAPID "CATCH" OCCURS AND AN UNCONTROLLED JERKING LUNGE FORWARD. VEHICLE SOMETIMES DOES NOT START ON FIRST TRY. ELECTRONIC HATCH DOES NOT WORK ALL OF THE TIME. DOORS DO NOT UNLOCK SOMETIMES BY TOUCH ELECTRONICALLY.

AFTER DOING MY HOMEWORK AND RESEARCH ON A VEHICLE WITH #1 SAFETY RATINGS IN ITS CLASS, I AM NOW IN A CONSTANT STATE OF FEAR FOR THE SAFETY OF NOT ONLY MYSELF AND MY FAMILY, BUT TO ANY OTHER INNOCENT PEOPLE AROUND ME. I TRAVEL AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE IN A VEHICLE THAT I AM STILL IN DEBT A VERY LARGE SUM OF MONEY ON. I TOOK DELIVERY OF MY 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE TRAILHAWK, 4X4 ON MAY 28, 2014. THE FIRST ISSUE OCCURRED ON JULY 31, 2014 WHEN THE VEHICLE FELT AS THOUGH THE ENGINE DROPPED OUT INTO THE STREET OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD, DISABLING THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY; IT WAS NOT DRIVABLE, NOR WOULD IT SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL IN ORDER TO GET ONTO THE TOW TRUCK. (THE TRANSMISSION AND EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEMS FAILED) TO MAKE AN INCREDIBLY LONG STORY SHORT...I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME EVENT AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS CONTINUOUSLY OVER A 14 MONTH PERIOD IN REGARD TO FAILURE OF MY EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM AS WELL AS MY TRANSMISSION TO INCLUDE: JERKING SO MUCH THAT MY PURSE FLIES FROM SEAT ONTO FLOORBOARD, JERKING THAT CAUSES MY DAUGHTER TO LUNGE FORWARD INTO THE BACK OF THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SEAT, A STALLED VEHICLE ON BUSY HIGHWAYS AND STREETS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, SUDDEN ENGAGEMENT OF EMERGENCY BRAKE WITH THE INABILITY TO RELEASE THE BRAKE WHILE STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS; I COULD GO ON AND ON. AFTER A TOTAL OF 20+ TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIPS FOR REPAIRS (8-10 OF THESE OF WHICH WERE VIA TOW TRUCK), (3) NEW TRANSMISSIONS, SEVERAL REPAIRS AND MODIFICATIONS TO THE EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM...MY VEHICLE IS STILL CURRENTLY OUT OF COMMISSION AND NOT IN MY POSSESSION. I RECEIVED A CALL ON TUES. OF THIS WEEK FROM THE DEALERSHIP TO INFORM ME THAT A RESOLUTION WAS MADE; YET ANOTHER TRANSMISSION WOULD BE INSTALLED IN MY DEATH TRAP OF A VEHICLE. (THIS MAKES #4) TO SAY THAT THIS IS CLEARLY THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. SOMETHING DRASTIC NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE PEOPLE ARE KILLED.

I PURCHASED A NEW JEEP CHEROKEE ON SEPTEMBER 1, 2014. APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING MY NEW CHEROKEE I STARTED NOTICING IT WAS ROUGH WHEN SHIFTING GEARS. ALMOST LIKE I WAS DRIVING A STICK SHIFT BUT DIDN'T KNOW HOW. I TOOK MY CAR TO RON LEWIS IN CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA TO GET THE RECALL UPDATES ON THE SOFTWARE AND EVER SINCE I'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS MORE FREQUENTLY. THE FIRST PROBLEM THAT OCCURS EVERY TIME I DRIVE MY VEHICLE IS WHEN I AM DRIFTING DOWN HILL, NOT ON THE BRAKE OR GAS. MY ENGINE REVS LIKE THE VEHICLE IS IN NEUTRAL AND I'M STEPPING, BUT IT DOES NOT ACCELERATE, AND MY RPM SHOOTS UP BETWEEN 4 AND 5. THIS HAPPENS ALL WHILE GOING AROUND 15-25 MPH. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THIS TO STOP IS TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES, OR SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL. I AM ALSO EXPERIENCING AN ACCELERATION IN SPEED WHICH HAPPENS WHEN I'M COMING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. I TOOK MY VEHICLE BACK OUT TO RON LEWIS IN CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP ON JULY 24, 2015 WITH APPROXIMATELY 7,700 MILES ON IT AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEMS CONTINUOUSLY OCCURRING. I DID RESEARCH ONLINE TO SEE IF OTHER PEOPLE WERE HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES WITH THEIR CHEROKEES AND FOUND SEVEN PAGES OF COMPLAINTS FROM 2014 AND 2015 CHEROKEE OWNERS ALL HAVING THE SAME, OR SIMILAR ISSUES. I SHOWED THIS INFORMATION TO A SERVICE ADVISOR SO THEY WERE AWARE I WASN'T THE ONLY OWNER HAVING THESE PROBLEMS. WHEN I FINALLY HEARD BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP THEY TOLD ME THEY CHECKED FOR ANY SOFTWARE UPDATES AND THAT I HAD ALL THE LATEST UPDATES. THEY THEN INFORMED ME SINCE THERE WERE NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ON THERE WAS NOTHING MORE THEY COULD DO FOR MY VEHICLE. SATURDAY JULY 25TH I TOOK A VIDEO DRIVING DOWN HILL BETWEEN 15-19 MPH, ENGINE REVVING VERY LOUD LIKE THE VEHICLES IN NEUTRAL, AND MY RPM ACCELERATING PASSED 4. I CALLED THE SERVICE ADVISOR LETTING HIM KNOW AND I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP YET.

I BOUGHT A PRE-OWNED CERTIFIED JEEP CHEROKEE 2014 FROM DAVID'S DODGE, JEEP, AND CHRYSLER LAST WEEK MONDAY, JUNE 6TH, 2015. I HAD A MAJOR ISSUE OCCUR A WEEK LATER ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE TRAVELING 65 MPH THE CAR LOSS TRACTION CONTROL, 4 WHEEL DRIVE, AND THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. I WAS IN A CATTLE SHOOT AND HAD TO COAST THE CAR DOWN THE HIGHWAY TO PULL OVER. A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ALONG WITH WARNINGS ABOUT THE TRACTION CONTROL AND TRANSMISSION WERE SHOWN. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PUT THE CAR IN PARK WHICH RESULTED IN A HARD JERK FROM MOVING THE CLUTCH FROM DRIVE TO PARK. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND THE CAR WAS IDLING AT AN ABNORMALLY HIGH RPM. I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND NOTICED A JERK ONCE AGAIN WHEN MOVING THROUGH THE GEARS. THE CAR ALSO SHIFTED VERY HARD FOR ABOUT 45 MORE MILES. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHO INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR REQUIRED AN UPDATE TO THE TRANSMISSION WHICH WAS PREFORMED THAT DAY. AS AN ENGINEER I FIND IT UNACCEPTABLE THAT THE DEALERSHIP SOLD A CAR WITH THE POTENTIAL TO CRASH ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO NEGLIGENCE WITH REGARDS IGNORING A CRUCIAL UPDATE LIKE THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER THE UPDATE TO THE TRANSMISSION THE CAR IS SHIFTING VERY HARD FROM GEAR TO GEAR AND SEEMS TO BE GIVING A SHALLOW SHIFT TO 1ST GEAR WHEN THE CAR IS AT A COMPLETE STOP. MONDAY, 13TH, 2015, I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT FOR TWO OTHER ISSUES A SQUEAK IN THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT AND AN INTERFERENCE ISSUE WITH THE SIRUSXM. AS AN ENGINEER IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THERE IS A DEEP UNDERLYING PROBLEM WITH THE 9 SPEED TRANSMISSION I WILL BE ASKING FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AS THE UPDATE WAS NOT EFFECTIVE CAUSING ROUGH SHIFTING AND A LOSS OF ACCELERATION IN THE SHIFT FROM HIGH TO LOW GEARS.

Jun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Remedy: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

PE22009 · Electronic Parking Brake Water Ingress

Opened Jul 22, 2022 · Closed Oct 29, 2023

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Parking Brake:electrical; Parking Brake:electrical:control Module

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened investigation PE22-009 after having received 80 complaints on model years 2014-2020 Jeep Cherokees alleging the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) inadvertently activated while the vehicle was in motion.During this investigation, the subject vehicles were updated to include only Model Years (MY) 2014-2016, while MY 2017-2020 were considered peers.Based on related repair invoices, ODI believed the EPB module was damaged by water leaking into the vehicle. When the EPB inadvertently activates, it can cause a stalling condition bringing the vehicle to a stop. ODI was aware of recall 15V-393 that addresses water ingress affecting the power liftgate module on nearly the same population of vehicles subject of this investigation. The liftgate module can potentially catch fire as a result of the water damage. Both the liftgate and EPB modules are located in a similar area of the vehicle.  On May 11, 2016, the manufacturer released a Technical Service Bulleting (ODI #10191415, FCA #08-060-16) that instructs dealers on replacing the EPB module and inspecting the electrical connector for corrosion if a customer describes having the EPB not releasing.  This Preliminary Evaluation was opened to assess the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect. On September 8th, 2022, ODI sent an information request letter to Fiat Chrysler US LLC (FCA) requesting pertinent information on the subject 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee and Peer 2017-2020 Jeep Cherokee vehicles. FCA Provided its full response on October 27th, 2022 after ODI granted a one-week extension.  ODI has reviewed the information FCA provided as well as new reports submitted to NHTSA’s Vehicle Owner Questionnaire database.  Based on a review of all available information, ODI has identified evidence supporting a total of 1,655 subject vehicles that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB.  Within the subject vehicle complaints, ODI identified the 2014 Model Year (MY) Jeep Cherokee as having the highest rate of failure, while also being the oldest group of vehicles in this investigation.  The 2014 Jeep Cherokees that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB represent an incident rate of approximately 0.58%.  The average Time In Service (TIS) at failure was 2.6 years and the oldest failure occurred at 8.5 years in service.  The 2014 population of vehicles is at 9 years in service.  All other MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles (both subject and peer) within this investigation had significantly lower failure rates than the 2014 MY Jeep Cherokee. ODI has reviewed all the information available at this time, and identified four allegations of a crash, three allegations of injuries, and one allegation of a fire. Two of the crash allegations alleged injuries, and the alleged injuries were minor severity. All of the alleged injuries appeared to be consistent with hard braking and did not need medical attention.  There was no supporting information that demonstrated a fire had occurred on the vehicle. In its response to ODI, FCA provided its assessment of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles, stating that it does not believe the alleged defect poses an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.  FCA states the majority of incidents involving the EPB inadvertently activating occurred while the vehicle was stationary and that a small number of incidents occurred while the vehicle was backing up or at low speeds. This is consistent with ODI’s observations. Based on the analysis conducted by ODI, this investigation will be closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. NHTSA reserves the right take additional actions if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

EA21002 · Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

Opened Sep 17, 2021 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module; Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module

On July 23, 2015, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) launched Safety Recall 15V-461 to remedy security vulnerabilities in approximately 1.4 million model year (MY) 2013 through 2015 vehicles equipped with Uconnect head units (HU) 8.4A (RA3 radio) and 8.4AN (RA4 radio) manufactured by Harman International. On July 24, 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query, RQ 15-004, to investigate HU security vulnerabilities and remedy effectiveness in the recalled population and to determine whether similar units have been supplied for use in other FCA vehicles. In an August 11, 2015 letter, FCA submitted a second Part 573 safety recall report expanding the scope of the Uconnect RA4 model radio to include additional 7,810 MY 2015 Jeep Renegade vehicles manufactured from September 18, 2014 through June 25, 2015 (Recall 15V-508).Scope analysis indicated that Uconnect radios installed in FCA vehicles not included in recalls 15V-461 or 15V-508 (subject recalls) are not equipped with built-in cellular access or short range wireless communication features and, thus, do not contain the security vulnerabilities addressed by the subject recalls. SUBJECT VEHICLES: MY2014 through 2015 Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicles; MY2013 through 2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500/5500 pickup trucks; MY2013 through 2015 Dodge Viper vehicles; and MY2015 Chrysler 200, 300, Jeep Renegade, Dodge Charger and Challenger vehicles.According to FCA, long and short range wireless vulnerabilities identified in the recalled vehicles could allow unauthorized third-party access to, and manipulation of, networked vehicle control systems.Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities, coupled with reverse engineering of networked microprocessor control modules, could result in unauthorized manipulation of vehicle control systems. This unauthorized manipulation of vehicle controls and systems could expose the driver, vehicle occupants or other highway users to an increased risk of injury.FCA and its network provider, Sprint, conducted a nationwide campaign to block access to a radio communications port that was unintentionally left open.On July 27, 2015, short range wireless vulnerabilities were also blocked. Finally, third party security evaluation and regression testing identified vulnerabilities that were either remedied by Sprint or through updates to the FCA Uconnect software.ODI identified a total of 30 complaints or field reports on unique vehicles submitted by FCA (29) or received by NHTSA (1) alleging incidents of theft from a vehicle or anomalous performance that the owner alleged were caused by, or may have been caused by, remote hacking.Twenty-six (87%) of these reports were submitted after a magazine article was published on July 21, 2015, describing the remote hacking of an FCA vehicle by researchers who were able to affect the operation of various vehicle control systems, including the service brakes, steering, throttle and ignition. Most of the complaints involved vehicle systems that were not safety critical (e.g., complaints related to radio, navigation system, or air-conditioning control) and did not affect vehicle control.Three complaints reported engine stalls. One owner reported sudden unintended acceleration allegedly related to hacking.None of the complaints or field reports reviewed involved the steering and braking vehicle control effects demonstrated by the research hackers prior to the recall. There were no confirmed incidents of hacking in any of the records reviewed by ODI.The remedies completed by Sprint and FCA appear to have eliminated vulnerabilities that mi
