I ATTEMPTED TO CONTINUE BUT COULD NOT GO FORWARD EVEN THOUGH THE RPMS WERE REVVING. I PUT IT IN PARK AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES. THEN I PUT IT IN DRIVE AND IT STRUGGLED TO SHIFT BUT I WAS ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD AND MAKE IT TO WHERE I WAS GOING. LATER IN THE DAY IT WAS LABORING TO ACCELERATE MAINLY ON CITY STREETS, NOT SO MUCH ON THE HIGHWAY. SINCE THEN IT HAS BEEN RUNNING NORMAL, BUT I FEAR IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN.

I HAD JUST LEFT THE GAS STATION WHERE I FILLED UP. WHEN IN GEAR FROM A STOP THERE WAS A LENGTHY DELAY AS THE ENGINE RPM'S RISE AND VEHICLE BARELY MOVED. AFTER 10 TO 20 SECONDS ANOTHER GEAR WILL ENGAGE AND THE VEHICLE WILL PICK UP SPEED AT WHICH POINT ANOTHER GEAR WILL VIOLENTLY SLAM INTO OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WILL SEEM TO FUNCTION NORMALLY AT THAT POINT UNTIL SLOWING DOWN WHEN THE VEHICLE SHIFTS VIOLENTLY AND ERRATICALLY, SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL WITHOUT WARNING. BY NOW ALL WARNING LIGHTS HAVE LIT UP. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, PARKING BRAKE LIGHT, "SERVICE TRANSMISSION" APPEAR ON DISPLAY AND THAT ALTERNATES WITH "SHIFT TO PARK AND THEN TO DESIRED GEAR". SHUTTING THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTING AFTER 24 HOURS REVEALED THAT ONLY THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT WAS ON AND WHEN VEHICLE IS PUT IN "DRIVE", THERE WAS NO VIOLENT GEAR ENGAGEMENT, BUT VEHICLE BARELY MOVED. I PUT THE VEHICLE BACK IN PARK AND SHUT IT OFF.

STARTED IT BACK UP, THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT REMAINED ON AND THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO GEAR AND DROVE NORMALLY. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE RESULT OF THE TRANSMISSION RECALL ##16V529000. AFTER THIS HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO DID NOT ADVISE OF ANY RECALL, BUT UPDATED THE SOFTWARE, CHARGED ME FOR IT AND SAID IT WAS FIXED. NOW THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED AGAIN, ON THE SAME HIGHWAY AT THE SAME SPEED.

SINCE I PURCHASED MY USED VEHICLE I HAVE HAD A REOCCURRING ISSUE WHERE THE VEHICLE HESITATES TO ACCELERATE IN THE FIRST GEAR. RECENTLY IT HAS GOTTEN SO SEVERE THAT THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUTS OFF. I'VE NOTICED THAT IT OCCURS MOST FREQUENTLY AFTER I FILL MY TANK AND AFTER PROLONGED PERIODS OF BEING STOPPED. IT HAS OCCURRED FOUR TIMES ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE SITTING IN TRAFFIC AND MOST RECENTLY WHILE WAITING AT A RED LIGHT. WHEN IT OCCURS THE VEHICLE STILL HAS POWER RUNNING THROUGH AND A NOTICES ALWAYS POPS UP SAYING "CAR MUST BE IN PARK IN ORDER TO SHIFT." IN ALL CASES I HAVE HAD TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND WAIT SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE THE CAR WAS ABLE TO TURN BACK ON. IN ALL CASES NO INDICATOR LIGHT APPEARED AS TO WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE. AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO GET SERVICED THEW FIRST TIME I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE BATTERY. THE SECOND TIME I TOOK IT TO GET SERVICED I WAS TOLD THE EVAPORATED CANISTER AND PURGE SOLENOID HAD TO REPLACED. THE ISSUE STILL EXISTS AND THE DEALERSHIP HAS ASKED ME TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AS IS UNTIL A SERVICE LIGHT APPEARS BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM CAN BE. THIS VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AS IS.

CAR STALLS AND COMPLETELY SHUTS OFF. TOLD ITS GAS AND NOT TO FILL UP GAS TANK. NOT SURE HOW THIS EFFECTS THE TRANSMISSION. CAR JERKS INTO GEAR OR RIGHT BEFORE SHUTTING OFF. SHAKES, IS LOUD. DOES THIS WITH OR WITHOUT FILLING UP THE TANK. CAR HAD BARELY HALF A TANK WHEN I PURCHASED IT AND IT DID IT THEN. THE VERY NEXT DAY. I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. AND I BELIEVE THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY STILL APPLIES BUT THEY WON'T FIX THE PROBLEM. KEEPS SAYING ITS NOT PULLING OR STORING CODES. ENGINE LIGHT AND SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON. NOT ON THE NEXT NEXT. HARD STARTS. TRANS IS SLIPPING. IT DOES THIS WHILE I'M DRIVING. EITHER AT TAKE OFF OR WHILE I'M SLOWING DOWN TO STOP IS WHEN IT SHUTS OFF. YOU CAN FEEL THE TRANS SLIPPING WHILE DRIVING. CAR IS NOISY SOMETIMES AND SLOW TO ACCELERATE. CAR ACTS LIKE IT GOING TO STALL WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREET OR HIGHWAY. HAS SHUT OFF ON BOTH. I DO MOSTLY FREEWAY DRIVING. WAS TOLD THERE WAS A CASE INVOLVING MAKE YEAR AND MODEL OF MY CAR. I LOOKED IT UP AND THERE APPEARS TO BE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN REGARDS TO FAULTY TRANSMISSION AND CHRYSLER KNEW OF THIS. I WAS NOT TOLD ABOUT THIS WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DOING THIS SINCE I PURCHASED IT IN SEPTEMBER OF THIS YEAR. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN AND CALLED SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE SAME THING. THEY UPDATED THE COMPUTER AND REPLACED A PART AND NOW THEY ARE BASICALLY TELLING ME THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS EXCEPT THAT IT MAY BE FROM FILLING UP MY GAS TANK AND IT MAKING THE ENGINE STALL BUT NO SOLUTION TO FIX THE PROBLEM BESIDES NOT FILLING MY TANK I AM GUESSING. BUT NO EXPLANATION ON THE TRANS. JUST KEEPS SAYING ITS NOT STORING OR PULLING CODES. THIS IS DANGEROUS TO BE DRIVING A CAR THAT CAN SHUT OFF AT WILL WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR.

REPLACED GAS TANK. 5TH TIME DRIVING ON FREEWAY WHEN TRANSMISSION LOCKED UP AND WAS STRANDED AGAIN ONLY THIS TIME IT COMPLETELY LOCKED DOWN. MANAGED TO COAST CAR TO SHOULDER ON FREEWAY AND POLICE SHOWED UP TO STAY BEHIND ME TO KEEP FROM GETTING HIT BY ONCOMING FREEWAY TRAFFIC. NOW SERVICE CENTER CLAIMS IT IS THE VAPOR CANISTER. I WAS DRIVING AND THE SPEED WAS DECLINING UNTIL IT COMPLETED STOPPED AND WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO ACCELERATE ANYMORE. I WAS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TRIED TO PUT IT BACK IN DRIVE BUT IT WOULD ONLY ROLL BACKWARDS EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT IN REVERSE GEAR. THEN IT STARTED SMOKING AND LEAKING COOLANT.

DESPITE A NUMBER OF UPDATES MADE TO THE TRANSMISSION IN THE JEEP CHEROKEE (KL) SERIES, THE TRANSMISSION CONTINUES TO GIVE ME SAFETY CONCERN. AMONGST THE ISSUES EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT PAUSE OR "HANG TIME" WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FOR A TURN. THIS OCCURS BOTH DURING TIME OF DECELERATION INTO A TURN LANE FOLLOWED BY A QUICK TURN (I.E. WHEN THERE IS AN OPENING IN TRAFFIC) OR WHEN STOPPED (I.E. STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN AND THEN ACCELERATING FOR A TURN THE CAR BEGIN TO ROLL AT A FEW MILES PER HOUR BY THE TRANSMISSION JUST FEELS LIKE IT WON'T CONNECT, WHEN IT DOES THE VEHICLE LURCHES AND OFTEN BREAKS TIRE TREAD CONTACT, EVEN ON DRY PAVEMENT). ANOTHER ISSUE INVOLVING THE TRANSMISSION IS WHILE PARKING, APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK AGO I WAS TURNING INTO A TIGHT PARKING SPACE AND I SUPPOSE THE TRANSMISSION MUST HAVE BEEN IN 2ND GEAR AND NOT 1ST AS IT DECIDED TO DOWNSHIFT, LURCHING THE VEHICLE FORWARD. FORTUNATELY, SINCE I WAS TURNING INTO A PARKING SPACE, I HAD THE BRAKES NEARLY FULLY ENGAGED, WHICH KEPT ME FROM STRIKING THE NEXT CAR OVER, BUT IT WAS CLOSE AS THE LURCH WAS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO THROW THE CARS WEIGHT FORWARD. JEEP HAS MADE AN EFFORT TO ADDRESS SOME OF THESE ISSUES VIA SOFTWARE UPDATES, BUT I AM CONCERNED THAT NEARLY 4 YEARS INTO OWNERSHIP OF THIS VEHICLE THAT THE TRANSMISSION CANNOT ACTUALLY BE "FIXED." I AM CONCERNED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WILL CONTINUE TO CAUSE AND OR ALLOW FOR SAFETY SITUATIONS THAT ARE GOING TO LEAD TO TRAFFIC CRASHES AND POSSIBLE INJURIES. I FEEL AS THOUGH A DEEPER LOOK AT THE ISSUES REVOLVING AROUND THE ZF 9 SPEED TRANSMISSION ARE WARRANTED, TO INCLUDE A SIGNIFICANT TESTING PHASE OR INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE WHY THESE ISSUES ARE STILL PRESENT AND WHAT, IF ANYTHING, CAN BE DONE TO ADDRESS THEM.

AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 10 MINUTES, WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF ROUTE 191 AND TRAVELING ABOUT 45 MPH, THE POWER TRAIN SIMPLY DISENGAGED. STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR DID NOTHING. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. HAD I BEEN IN AN INTERSECTION I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN WIPED OUT. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND NOTICED 2 WARNING MESSAGES. THE FIRST READ: 'SERVICE TRANSMISSION RESTART IN PARK WITH VEHICLE AT ZERO SPEED.' THE SECOND MESSAGE SAID: 'SERVICE PARK BRAKE.' A HOST OF SERVICE LIGHTS LIT ACROSS THE DASHBOARD AS WELL. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT. WHEN I SHIFTED INTO REVERSE, IT MADE A VERY LOUD CLANK SOUND. I COULD NOT SHIFT ANY FURTHER TO NEUTRAL OR DRIVE. THE SAME THING OCCURRED A SECOND TIME. ON MY THIRD ATTEMPT, I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE TO THE CLOSEST JEEP DEALERSHIP. THEY HOOKED IT UP TO THE DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE AND FOUND NO ACTIVE OR STORED MESSAGES. THEY SCHEDULED ME TO COME BACK TO UPDATE THE CAR'S SOFTWARE.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

3PE22009 · Electronic Parking Brake Water Ingress
Opened Jul 22, 2022 · Closed Oct 29, 2023
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Parking Brake:electrical; Parking Brake:electrical:control Module
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened investigation PE22-009 after having received 80 complaints on model years 2014-2020 Jeep Cherokees alleging the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) inadvertently activated while the vehicle was in motion.During this investigation, the subject vehicles were updated to include only Model Years (MY) 2014-2016, while MY 2017-2020 were considered peers.Based on related repair invoices, ODI believed the EPB module was damaged by water leaking into the vehicle. When the EPB inadvertently activates, it can cause a stalling condition bringing the vehicle to a stop. ODI was aware of recall 15V-393 that addresses water ingress affecting the power liftgate module on nearly the same population of vehicles subject of this investigation. The liftgate module can potentially catch fire as a result of the water damage. Both the liftgate and EPB modules are located in a similar area of the vehicle. On May 11, 2016, the manufacturer released a Technical Service Bulleting (ODI #10191415, FCA #08-060-16) that instructs dealers on replacing the EPB module and inspecting the electrical connector for corrosion if a customer describes having the EPB not releasing. This Preliminary Evaluation was opened to assess the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect. On September 8th, 2022, ODI sent an information request letter to Fiat Chrysler US LLC (FCA) requesting pertinent information on the subject 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee and Peer 2017-2020 Jeep Cherokee vehicles. FCA Provided its full response on October 27th, 2022 after ODI granted a one-week extension. ODI has reviewed the information FCA provided as well as new reports submitted to NHTSA’s Vehicle Owner Questionnaire database. Based on a review of all available information, ODI has identified evidence supporting a total of 1,655 subject vehicles that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB. Within the subject vehicle complaints, ODI identified the 2014 Model Year (MY) Jeep Cherokee as having the highest rate of failure, while also being the oldest group of vehicles in this investigation. The 2014 Jeep Cherokees that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB represent an incident rate of approximately 0.58%. The average Time In Service (TIS) at failure was 2.6 years and the oldest failure occurred at 8.5 years in service. The 2014 population of vehicles is at 9 years in service. All other MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles (both subject and peer) within this investigation had significantly lower failure rates than the 2014 MY Jeep Cherokee. ODI has reviewed all the information available at this time, and identified four allegations of a crash, three allegations of injuries, and one allegation of a fire. Two of the crash allegations alleged injuries, and the alleged injuries were minor severity. All of the alleged injuries appeared to be consistent with hard braking and did not need medical attention. There was no supporting information that demonstrated a fire had occurred on the vehicle. In its response to ODI, FCA provided its assessment of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles, stating that it does not believe the alleged defect poses an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. FCA states the majority of incidents involving the EPB inadvertently activating occurred while the vehicle was stationary and that a small number of incidents occurred while the vehicle was backing up or at low speeds. This is consistent with ODI’s observations. Based on the analysis conducted by ODI, this investigation will be closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. NHTSA reserves the right take additional actions if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

EA21002 · Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
Opened Sep 17, 2021 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module; Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

On July 23, 2015, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) launched Safety Recall 15V-461 to remedy security vulnerabilities in approximately 1.4 million model year (MY) 2013 through 2015 vehicles equipped with Uconnect head units (HU) 8.4A (RA3 radio) and 8.4AN (RA4 radio) manufactured by Harman International. On July 24, 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query, RQ 15-004, to investigate HU security vulnerabilities and remedy effectiveness in the recalled population and to determine whether similar units have been supplied for use in other FCA vehicles. In an August 11, 2015 letter, FCA submitted a second Part 573 safety recall report expanding the scope of the Uconnect RA4 model radio to include additional 7,810 MY 2015 Jeep Renegade vehicles manufactured from September 18, 2014 through June 25, 2015 (Recall 15V-508).Scope analysis indicated that Uconnect radios installed in FCA vehicles not included in recalls 15V-461 or 15V-508 (subject recalls) are not equipped with built-in cellular access or short range wireless communication features and, thus, do not contain the security vulnerabilities addressed by the subject recalls. SUBJECT VEHICLES: MY2014 through 2015 Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicles; MY2013 through 2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500/5500 pickup trucks; MY2013 through 2015 Dodge Viper vehicles; and MY2015 Chrysler 200, 300, Jeep Renegade, Dodge Charger and Challenger vehicles.According to FCA, long and short range wireless vulnerabilities identified in the recalled vehicles could allow unauthorized third-party access to, and manipulation of, networked vehicle control systems.Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities, coupled with reverse engineering of networked microprocessor control modules, could result in unauthorized manipulation of vehicle control systems. This unauthorized manipulation of vehicle controls and systems could expose the driver, vehicle occupants or other highway users to an increased risk of injury.FCA and its network provider, Sprint, conducted a nationwide campaign to block access to a radio communications port that was unintentionally left open.On July 27, 2015, short range wireless vulnerabilities were also blocked. Finally, third party security evaluation and regression testing identified vulnerabilities that were either remedied by Sprint or through updates to the FCA Uconnect software.ODI identified a total of 30 complaints or field reports on unique vehicles submitted by FCA (29) or received by NHTSA (1) alleging incidents of theft from a vehicle or anomalous performance that the owner alleged were caused by, or may have been caused by, remote hacking.Twenty-six (87%) of these reports were submitted after a magazine article was published on July 21, 2015, describing the remote hacking of an FCA vehicle by researchers who were able to affect the operation of various vehicle control systems, including the service brakes, steering, throttle and ignition. Most of the complaints involved vehicle systems that were not safety critical (e.g., complaints related to radio, navigation system, or air-conditioning control) and did not affect vehicle control.Three complaints reported engine stalls. One owner reported sudden unintended acceleration allegedly related to hacking.None of the complaints or field reports reviewed involved the steering and braking vehicle control effects demonstrated by the research hackers prior to the recall. There were no confirmed incidents of hacking in any of the records reviewed by ODI.The remedies completed by Sprint and FCA appear to have eliminated vulnerabilities that mi
