I STARTED MY CAR WITH PUSH BUTTON IGNITION AND IT IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED TO 4000 RPM AND STAYED AT THAT SPEED FOR OVER 20 MINUTES. DURING THAT TIME, I WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND COULD NOT SHIFT THE CAR. WHEN THE ENGINE FINALLY RETURNED TO A NORMAL IDLE SPEED, I COULD SHIFT THE CAR BUT COULD NOT ACCELERATE THE ENGINE. I WOULD PRESS THE GAS PEDAL AND NOTHING HAPPENED...THE ENGINE REMAINED RUNNING AT IDLE. I CALLED TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALER AND AFTER IT SAT FOR AN HOUR OR SO , IT WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN ON TO THE FLATBED TRUCK. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. AFTER 5 DAYS, THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLED AND SAID THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS NOT ON AND THERE WERE NO CODES INDICATING A PROBLEM. THEY DID NOTHING TO FIND OR ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM AND I'M CONCERNED THAT IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN WHILE I'M DRIVING THE CAR. I AM ALSO CONCERNED THAT THE ENGINE COULD HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY RUNNING CONTINUALLY AT 4OOO RPM FOR OVER 20 MINUTES.. I WOULD ASSUME THAT THIS EVENT WAS CAUSED BY A SOFTWARE PROBLEM, SO I AM CONFIDENT THAT IT WILL REOCCUR. FRNKLY, I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR.

MY VEHICLE HAS HAD CONTINUOUS ISSUES OF JERKING/MISSING GEARS WHEN IT SHIFTS, WHEN I TOOK TO BE CHECKED I WAS TOLD IT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE AND THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE UNTIL THE ENGINE BLOWS UP. I WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF ANY SORT OF ISSUES WHEN I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE NEW. I HAVE ALSO NOW HAD CONTINUOUS PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE NOT STARTING FROM BEING STATIONARY, MULTIPLE TIMES IT HAS NOT STARTED AFTER BEING OFF FOR A PERIOD OF TIME, IE 24 HOURS, BUT ALSO NUMEROUS TIMES MY VEHICLE HAS SHUT OFF WHILE IN MOTION, I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND MY VEHICLE JUST SHUT OFF COMPLETELY, NO LIGHTS, NO GAS, NO RADIO ETC. I WAS LUCKILY ON THE SIDE OF A NON-BUSY ROAD AT THAT TIME ABOUT TO TURN ONTO A MAIN ROAD. I HAD BOTH MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE WITH ME. I WAS UNABLE TO START MY VEHICLE FROM THIS NOW STATIONARY POSITION FOR APPROX. 15 MINUTES I SAT IDLE IN THE ROAD WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR. ANOTHER TIME MY VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN A BUSY INTERSECTION MY CAR SHUT OFF AS I WAS TURNING AND I WAS ALMOST T-BONED MY VEHICLE STARTED UP AFTER TRYING A FEW TIMES AND I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE ROAD WAY. ONCE I WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT TO COLLECT MYSELF, MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AGAIN. IT TOOK APPROX. 4 TIMES TRYING TO START IT AGAIN. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND WILL BE TAKING IT BACK, TO BE CHECKED. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THEM THE FIRST TIME FOR IT TO BE CHECKED AS TO WHY IT SHUT OFF AND THEY COULD ONLY COME UP WITH THAT IT WAS LOW ON OIL, THEY DID AN OIL CHANGE AND SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE, WHICH CLEARLY THE OIL WASN'T THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT HAS ONLY BEEN ABOUT 400 MILES SINCE THE OIL CHANGE.

ORDERED CAR THROUGH BROWN MOTORS, LOCATED IN PETOSKEY MI. SALESMAN HAS BEEN CONDUCTING BUSINESS WITH THE FAMILY FOR MANY YEARS. CAR REPLACED VEHICLE AFFECTED IN A MAJOR FLOOD, AUG. 12, 2014. PICKED UP CAR FROM VEHICLE COURIER AT A LOCATION OFFSITE OF THE DEALERSHIP. WHILE DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY FEW MILES AND COMING TO A STOP DUE TO TRAFFIC, I NOTICED THAT THE FRONT END ON THE PASSENGER SIDE MADE A VERY NOTICEABLE WOBBLING MOTION BETWEEN 5 AND 20 MPH. VEHICLE HAS REPEATED THE WOBBLING SPORADICALLY AT THE SAME SPEED UPON ACCELERATION AND OCCASIONALLY WHEN COMING TO A STOP. TOOK THE VEHICLE IN AND HAD TWO RECALLS PERFORMED. ONE FOR THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG AND ANOTHER FOR THE TRANSMISSION MODULE. THE TRANSMISSION MODULE ADJUSTMENT DID NOTHING TO AMEND THE FRONT END WOBBLE. ALSO, ON OCCASION WHEN ACCELERATING TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE, THE ENGINE REVS UP TO ALMOST THE RED LINE ON THE TACHOMETER BEFORE THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS AND THE CAR ACTUALLY INCREASES IN SPEED. LUCKILY I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS ON A TWO LANE ROAD WHILE PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE. OTHER THAN THAT THE VEHICLE PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN ADEQUATE.

ON APRIL 1, 2015 WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP TO MERGING INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC THE TRANSMISSION DISENGAGED AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER. WARNING CAME ON THE DASH TELLING ME " TRANSMISSION NEEDS SERVICE. NO POWER. PULL OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD. PUT CAR IN PARK AND SHUT OFF ENGINE." THIS HAPPENED AGAIN ON JULY 17, 2015 WHILE MY WIFE WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN FROM A COMPLETE STOP. THE TRANSMISSION DISENGAGED AGAIN AND SHE LOST ALL POWER. SHE WAS NEARLY REAR ENDED BY A SEMI TRUCK WHO WAS BEHIND HER BUT MADE THE LEFT HAND TURN WITHOUT SLOWING DOWN. SHE HAD OUR 2 GRAND DAUGHTERS IN THE BACK SET AND WAS SCARED AND AFRAID FOR THEIR SAFETY. THIS 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE MODEL HAS HAD CONTINUED ISSUES WITH THE 9 SPEED TRANSMISSION AND ALL JEEP DOES IS ISSUE SOFTWARE UPGRADES TO TRY TO ELIMINATE THE SHIFTING AND POOR ACCELERATION PROBLEMS THIS TRANSMISSION CONTINUES TO HAVE. WITH THE TRANSMISSION DISENGAGING AT LOWER SPEEDS SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED IF NOT SERIOUSLY HURT. THE NHTSA NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL TO JEEP BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED BY THIS FAULTY TRANSMISSION THAT WAS BROUGHT TO MARKET BEFORE LONG TERM TEST COULD BE CONDUCTED ON IT TO MAKE SURE IT FUNCTIONS PROPERLY AND SAFELY.

MY WIFE WAS ON HER WAY TO WORK FOR THE LAST DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND GOT 2 BLOCKS FROM THE HOUSE BEFORE CALLING FOR HELP. THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND LUCKILY SHE WAS ABLE TO GET OFF OF THE ROAD. IT WAS RAINY BOTH THE DAY BEFORE AND THAT MORNING ALSO. SHE SAID THERE WAS A MESSAGE THAT CAME UP SAYING SHIFT INTO PARK AND START THE CAR. SHE COULDN'T GET IT TO START AGAIN. I MET HER AND AFTER TRYING, GOT THE CAR GOING BUT NOTICED THAT I DIDN'T FEEL ANY RESPONSE OR HEAR ANY ENGINE REVVING WHEN PUSHING THE GAS PEDAL DOWN. IT ALSO SEEMED TO START FAIRLY ROUGH. SHE TOOK MY VEHICLE TO WORK. I CHECKED THE VEHICLE LATER AND IT STARTED OK. THE BATTERY VOLTAGE WAS THE NORMAL 12.6V AND 14.7V WHEN RUNNING. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE. THE NEXT DAY AS THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T START. WE DECIDED TO WAIT UNTIL FRI MORNING WITH CHRISTMAS BEING THURS. THE VEHICLE DID START BEFORE THE FLATBED TOWED IT OFF TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER HAD THE VEHICLE ALL DAY AND WAS ABOUT READY FOR ME TO PICK IT UP WHEN THEY NOTICED A LOSS IN PRESSURE AT THE FUEL PUMP AND DECIDED TO REPLACE IT. AFTER WE GOT THE VEHICLE BACK IT RAN OK FOR A FEW DAYS BUT THEN ON 1/3/2015 IT CUT OUT AGAIN ABOUT TWO BLOCKS FROM OUR HOUSE IN THE OTHER DIRECTION.. IT WAS AGAIN RAINY OUTSIDE. SHE AGAIN SAW THE SAME MESSAGE. I MET HER AND GOT IT STARTED AGAIN BUT ALSO AGAIN NOTICED NO REACTION TO STEPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL. WHEN I SHIFTED IT INTO REVERSE IT THEN SEEMED TO REACT TO GIVING IT GAS FINE AND DROVE HOME OK. WE TOOK IT TO CHURCH AND AROUND TOWN THE NEXT DAY AND IT SEEMED FAIRLY NORMAL. HAVING GONE THROUGH ROUGH SHIFTING PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE EARLY AND TWO TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WITH CHRYSLER GRAND VOYAGERS AND THEN THIS JEEP AND THE ARTICLES ON THIS SITE THAT SEEM TO BE POINTING TO JEEP TRANSMISSIONS I THINK CHRYSLER BETTER COME UP WITH THE RIGHT FIX VERY SOON BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR

I WAS TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE IN THE LEFT LANE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHEN I LOST MY FORWARD DRIVE GEAR, MY VEHICLE RAPIDLY SLOWED CAUSING VEHICLES BEHIND ME TO BREAK. MY DISPLAY WAS TELLING ME TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE. MY GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR WAS FLASHING RAPIDLY BETWEEN DRIVE AND NATURAL. I TRIED TO GET OVER TO THE RIGHT LANE THEN THE SHOULDER AS OTHER VEHICLES AVOIDED ME. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND I HAD NO ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. I GOT TO THE SHOULDER, PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND THEN RESTARTED. I WAS THEN ABLE TO PROCEED DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER ALONG THE SHOULDER OF THE INTERSTATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON. THE SERVICE MANAGER RAN A QUICK CHECK AND SAID THE VEHICLE RECORDED OVER 20 FAULTS AT THE SAME TIME WHICH RANGED FROM DISENGAGING THE ANTI LOCK BREAKS TO DISABLING MY FORWARD DRIVE. HE SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE. HE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO ME THE SAME EVENING BECAUSE HE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX IT, BUT SAID IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE OF SOME TYPE. I CONTACTED JEEP CASE # 26113535. ALTHOUGH THEY ATTEMPTED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE THEY ULTIMATELY CLOSED THE CASE BECAUSE ONCE THE DEALER INITIALLY CLEARED THE FAULTS THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I CONTACTED JEEP REFERENCE NUMBER 26160146 AND EXPRESSED MY CONCERN THAT THEY HAD CLOSED THE CASE CLAIMING THAT I HAD NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD TALKED TO THE DEALER WHO TOLD THEM HE COULD NOT DO IT. JEEP WANTS ME TO WAIT UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. IF I HAVE TO WAIT THE UNTIL NEXT TIME MY VEHICLE LOOSES ALL FORWARD DRIVE AND ABILITY TO ACCELERATE OUT OF A DANGEROUS SITUATION THERE MAY BE A FATALITY OR MAJOR ACCIDENT DEPENDING ON WHERE, TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND WEATHER CONDITIONS IT HAPPENS.THERE IS OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE WHICH JEEP IS CHOOSING TO IGNORE.. *JS

PRIOR TO SHIFTING DOWN FROM 8TH TO 7TH ON AN INTERSTATE, AND WORSE, WHEN IN CITY TRAFFIC SHIFTING FROM 5TH TO 4TH WHEN THE TACHOMETER ACTUALLY GOES UP 1000 RPM OR MORE CAUSING YOU TO BRAKE HARDER. THIS IS PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS WHEN ON ICE AND HARD PACKED SNOW. THIS IS NOT DECELERATION DUE TO COMPRESSION, BUT AN ACTUAL ADDITION OF FUEL JUST AS IF YOU HIT THE ACCELERATOR. IT HAS DONE THIS SINCE NEW, BUT IS GETTING WORSE AND CHRYSLER HAS NOT ADDRESSED THE ISSUE TO DATE. IT HAS BEEN IN FOR REPAIRS 2 TIMES. *TR

WHEN THIS HAPPENS, I HAVE TO JUST LET OFF THE GAS AND THEN GIVE IT 2-3 SECONDS BEFORE BEING ABLE TO HAVE ACCELERATION POWER. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I HAVE TO GIVE MUCH MORE ROOM WHEN TURNING. ALONG WITH THIS ISSUE, I HAVE A ISSUE WITH POWER WHEN DRIVING (AGAIN AFTER STOPPING, NEVER INITIAL START AND DRIVE) WHERE THE ENGINE REVS HIGH, EVEN WHEN I LET OFF THE GAS, AND IT DOES NOT INCREASE SPEED, AND LOOSES SPEED AND POWER. I DO THE SAME THING WHERE I LET OFF THE GAS FOR A FEW SECONDS TILL THE RPM DROPS AND THEN CAN RESUME DRIVING AGAIN. *TR

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. 3PE22009 · Electronic Parking Brake Water Ingress
Opened Jul 22, 2022 · Closed Oct 29, 2023
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Parking Brake:electrical; Parking Brake:electrical:control Module
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened investigation PE22-009 after having received 80 complaints on model years 2014-2020 Jeep Cherokees alleging the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) inadvertently activated while the vehicle was in motion.During this investigation, the subject vehicles were updated to include only Model Years (MY) 2014-2016, while MY 2017-2020 were considered peers.Based on related repair invoices, ODI believed the EPB module was damaged by water leaking into the vehicle. When the EPB inadvertently activates, it can cause a stalling condition bringing the vehicle to a stop. ODI was aware of recall 15V-393 that addresses water ingress affecting the power liftgate module on nearly the same population of vehicles subject of this investigation. The liftgate module can potentially catch fire as a result of the water damage. Both the liftgate and EPB modules are located in a similar area of the vehicle. On May 11, 2016, the manufacturer released a Technical Service Bulleting (ODI #10191415, FCA #08-060-16) that instructs dealers on replacing the EPB module and inspecting the electrical connector for corrosion if a customer describes having the EPB not releasing. This Preliminary Evaluation was opened to assess the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect. On September 8th, 2022, ODI sent an information request letter to Fiat Chrysler US LLC (FCA) requesting pertinent information on the subject 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee and Peer 2017-2020 Jeep Cherokee vehicles. FCA Provided its full response on October 27th, 2022 after ODI granted a one-week extension. ODI has reviewed the information FCA provided as well as new reports submitted to NHTSA’s Vehicle Owner Questionnaire database. Based on a review of all available information, ODI has identified evidence supporting a total of 1,655 subject vehicles that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB. Within the subject vehicle complaints, ODI identified the 2014 Model Year (MY) Jeep Cherokee as having the highest rate of failure, while also being the oldest group of vehicles in this investigation. The 2014 Jeep Cherokees that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB represent an incident rate of approximately 0.58%. The average Time In Service (TIS) at failure was 2.6 years and the oldest failure occurred at 8.5 years in service. The 2014 population of vehicles is at 9 years in service. All other MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles (both subject and peer) within this investigation had significantly lower failure rates than the 2014 MY Jeep Cherokee. ODI has reviewed all the information available at this time, and identified four allegations of a crash, three allegations of injuries, and one allegation of a fire. Two of the crash allegations alleged injuries, and the alleged injuries were minor severity. All of the alleged injuries appeared to be consistent with hard braking and did not need medical attention. There was no supporting information that demonstrated a fire had occurred on the vehicle. In its response to ODI, FCA provided its assessment of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles, stating that it does not believe the alleged defect poses an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. FCA states the majority of incidents involving the EPB inadvertently activating occurred while the vehicle was stationary and that a small number of incidents occurred while the vehicle was backing up or at low speeds. This is consistent with ODI’s observations. Based on the analysis conducted by ODI, this investigation will be closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. NHTSA reserves the right take additional actions if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

EA21002 · Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
Opened Sep 17, 2021 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module; Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

On July 23, 2015, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) launched Safety Recall 15V-461 to remedy security vulnerabilities in approximately 1.4 million model year (MY) 2013 through 2015 vehicles equipped with Uconnect head units (HU) 8.4A (RA3 radio) and 8.4AN (RA4 radio) manufactured by Harman International. On July 24, 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query, RQ 15-004, to investigate HU security vulnerabilities and remedy effectiveness in the recalled population and to determine whether similar units have been supplied for use in other FCA vehicles. In an August 11, 2015 letter, FCA submitted a second Part 573 safety recall report expanding the scope of the Uconnect RA4 model radio to include additional 7,810 MY 2015 Jeep Renegade vehicles manufactured from September 18, 2014 through June 25, 2015 (Recall 15V-508).Scope analysis indicated that Uconnect radios installed in FCA vehicles not included in recalls 15V-461 or 15V-508 (subject recalls) are not equipped with built-in cellular access or short range wireless communication features and, thus, do not contain the security vulnerabilities addressed by the subject recalls. SUBJECT VEHICLES: MY2014 through 2015 Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicles; MY2013 through 2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500/5500 pickup trucks; MY2013 through 2015 Dodge Viper vehicles; and MY2015 Chrysler 200, 300, Jeep Renegade, Dodge Charger and Challenger vehicles.According to FCA, long and short range wireless vulnerabilities identified in the recalled vehicles could allow unauthorized third-party access to, and manipulation of, networked vehicle control systems.Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities, coupled with reverse engineering of networked microprocessor control modules, could result in unauthorized manipulation of vehicle control systems. This unauthorized manipulation of vehicle controls and systems could expose the driver, vehicle occupants or other highway users to an increased risk of injury.FCA and its network provider, Sprint, conducted a nationwide campaign to block access to a radio communications port that was unintentionally left open.On July 27, 2015, short range wireless vulnerabilities were also blocked. Finally, third party security evaluation and regression testing identified vulnerabilities that were either remedied by Sprint or through updates to the FCA Uconnect software.ODI identified a total of 30 complaints or field reports on unique vehicles submitted by FCA (29) or received by NHTSA (1) alleging incidents of theft from a vehicle or anomalous performance that the owner alleged were caused by, or may have been caused by, remote hacking.Twenty-six (87%) of these reports were submitted after a magazine article was published on July 21, 2015, describing the remote hacking of an FCA vehicle by researchers who were able to affect the operation of various vehicle control systems, including the service brakes, steering, throttle and ignition. Most of the complaints involved vehicle systems that were not safety critical (e.g., complaints related to radio, navigation system, or air-conditioning control) and did not affect vehicle control.Three complaints reported engine stalls. One owner reported sudden unintended acceleration allegedly related to hacking.None of the complaints or field reports reviewed involved the steering and braking vehicle control effects demonstrated by the research hackers prior to the recall. There were no confirmed incidents of hacking in any of the records reviewed by ODI.The remedies completed by Sprint and FCA appear to have eliminated vulnerabilities that mi
